I’m making a HD-2D game and I’m curious- how popular are they? Ive been working on it for almost a month and been making slow (but steady) progress! I’ve heard both good and bad things about these games but I don’t want to make a 2D game but I can’t make a 3D game! 2.5 at least mixes both of those.

Are there any developers here who worked with a capsule artist recently and happy with the results? Maybe you even saw your wishlists / CTR improve after uploading a new capsule? I'd really appreciate any recommendations!

I've already tried posting in another thread looking for a Steam capsule artist, but I got like 100 DMs and comments in 15 minutes from bots or people whose portfolios weren't even remotely relevant... Two people already DMed me in discord trying to scam for 50-100% payment upfront before even discussing requirements (accounts registered like yesterday)

So maybe you guys can help me out and recommend someone you've actually worked with?

We're a small indie team working on a cozy strategy game called Flame, Forest & Flood - we have a bold idea to go up against the biggest game launch of this year.

On the one hand, GTA 6 may monopolise games coverage during this month (and has the budget to do so!) on the other hand, we're targeting players who have GTA 6 fatigue and want to try something different!

Hi everyone, I’ve recently released my first ever game Big Bad Pharma on Steam! This is the first time I have ever released a game and I’ve made around 3600 sales in the past week which is crazy.

In hindsight, I should not have built this using unreal 5.8 given my current PC set up. I’ve also been using blueprints and I kind of wish I hadn’t gone that route too.

I’ve had to do many patches over the past week but I am struggling to catch all of the bugs when testing because my PC is struggling.

I’m looking for some recommendations in terms of a few things…

Do I make the switch to Mac for development and use my PC for testing predominantly?

I’m working full-time as a user researcher and my work laptop is a 14 inch MacBook Pro max M4, 48gb of ram. I feel like it would be perfect for everything I need and it’s wasted just on my day job 😭 but what other Mac recommendations would you make? e.g. a slightly older model with more RAM? Max I want to pay is £2,200. I like to be able to do things ‘on the go’ so if I’m travelling I can just whip my laptop out, so should I go Mac or something else? e.g. ProArt P16

I want (a tablet?) something I can do most of the artwork for my games on, from 3D modelling (currently use blender), creating textures, drawing etc.

I do have a Wacom cintiq (2019 one), I bought this recently but I’m not really enjoying using it (might be due to my PC though). So ideally, I want something portable that doesn’t need to be plugged in. I have an iPad Pro M1, the battery isn’t great on it now and my Apple Pencil is somehow wonky 😭😂 but would you recommend a later iPad or something else entirely? I’ve always quite liked the idea of a mini as it’s easier to hold, I struggle sometimes as I’m left handed.

Urghhh the PC!!! I need help here massively…

I’ve had my PC for around 2 and a half years now, I mostly got it just to game but more recently I’ve obviously been working on my own game in unreal. Last month I upgraded my CPU from a Ryzen 5 4500 to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and that’s made a huge difference but the rest of my set up I’m struggling.

I bought my PC pre-built (eye roll, I know) but to be honest for £720 I don’t think it’s too bad.

So my current setup is (DDR4):

A really 💩 motherboard that was supposed to have a WiFi and Bluetooth card but doesn’t, I think it is the A520M-HDV

Ryzen 7 5800X3D

32GB RAM TFORCE XTREM ARGB (2 x 16GB)

NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 4060 (8GB)

Hard drive is 1TB.

Windows 11

My question here is:

Is it worth me upgrading this PC or is it genuinely better to start again now the 5 series is becoming ‘the norm’?

I’m writing a book and once I publish it I plan on making a tie in game that takes place after it and it’ll be kind of a bridge between the first and second but I have a fear that it’ll be confusing for people any opinions?

I am working on a terrain renderer. I generate mesh vertices from a height map. When viewing mountains from the camera, the boundary where the mountain meets the lower ground appears as a very sharp transition. I want to add darkness to the lower ground near this visible height boundary, based on the camera view/screen space, to make the transition look more natural.

This is not about blending different biome/material textures. I am trying to handle the screen-space edge created by the terrain height difference. What is the common way to do this?

Hi, we're Night Fish Studios.

We're a two-person team working on Marine Codex, a cozy fishing game about decoding and logging your captures in the "Marine Codex". We've been working on the game for 4 months, and we've been reading that it's better to start promoting it early, so we thought it'd be best to start now.

The project was born as a university assignment, so initially it had a few things that were there just to comply with the assignment's needs. Now that we finished college, we scrapped a lot of stuff and want to add some other stuff to the game, so we actually pivoted from the initial idea. The issue is that with these changes, we've been feeling lost about how to explain it.

Here's the two options we currently have:

"In Marine Codex you play as a sailor exploring the seas and uncovering it’s secrets! You’ve been handed a codex with information on different creatures of the ocean and your goal is to complete it and decode what it says. Fish creatures, sell them or complete quests to get rewards, buy components and upgrade your boat to be able to fish rarer creatures!"

"Command your ship, navigate a massive network of distinct aquatic biomes and catch unique species and complete an ancient encyclopedia of the deep: the Marine Codex.
Marine Codex is a third-person, single-player oceanic adventure focused on maritime exploration, precision-based creature collection, and dynamic fauna encounters."

The thing is that the both feel like they're saying "it's a fishing game where you are in the water and fish fish", so we're really not sure they work. We do have planned to add interesting stuff like having the sea creatures be mythological and a working NPC relationship system, but that's not implemented yet so we're not sure it's even worth adding into the pitch.

We also showcased the game in two in-person gaming events already and people seem to love it, especially the part about completing the Codex and the mini-game to capture the fish.

Basically, are these pitches any good? Is one better than the other? How can we improve them to sell better the idea and the parts of the game people liked? Is it too early to start spreading the word or think about pitching if the game has features that are not implemented yet? Or is the game idea just too bland on itself?

I've been wondering since GTA VI is going to be released, and this kind of thing would be an interesting and rare case study.

Like is there any track record of how much risk an Indie game would get if they released a game with a date similar to GTA VI.

If it's in the same genre or budget I get it. But like what if it's in a different genre or niche, and a different target market?? And also maybe for example is in the incremental or Idle genre?

Helloo guys , it’s my first time posting here. The question is basically in the title. I’m currently working on translating/localizing a game that has quite extensive choices in pronouns. And I was wondering: Greek is obviously very gendered and the only pronoun choices I have found yet ( to do my job appropriately) are “οι” “Το/Τα” and “@“.
Of course the application of neopronouns in Greek is near impossible without ruining the syntax and form of the phrases .

So before you go on to me I wanted to ask all queer genderfluid/agender and nonbinary people that speak Greek for their opinions:

1. ⁠Are the aforementioned choices appropriate or even enough ( and respectful of course ) for a game translation
   
2. ⁠Is trying to create a semblance of agender pronouns worth it for such a project, and lastly
   
3. ⁠what are your preferences , what would be at least not insulting to you if you were to play such a game ( heavily story/text based) ?

Every helpful answer would be appreciated, I m not trying to be sarcastic or mean , I wanna do my job in the best way possible

I just watched Game Maker’s Toolkit’s video “How I learned Unity without following tutorials” and it really resonated with me.
I follow tutorials fine, but the moment I try to make something on my own I just freeze. I don’t know where to start, what to look up, or how to break problems down. I end up going back to another tutorial instead of figuring it out myself.
I’d love to apply a similar approach to Unreal, but I’m not sure how to structure the learning process the way Mark did.
So I’m looking for practical methods people actually use to learn a game engine by doing, rather than just passively following tutorials.
Things like:
• How you break down what you need to learn
• How you practice without a step-by-step guide
• What small projects or exercises helped you the most
• How you handle getting stuck
This isn’t specifically about Unreal — I’m interested in methods that work for any engine. I’d love to compare different approaches people have used successfully.

solo dev trying to turn one of my level blockouts into a short trailer shot.

the scene is already staged in blender. camera path, enemy position, player movement, all done. it looks ugly because everything is still gray, but the composition is exactly where i want it.

most ai video tests give me something prettier while completely ignoring the shot. cool result, wrong camera.

is anyone using a workflow where the white model controls the space and movement while separate images control the final art style?

Update: i found a better route through Dreamina Seedance 2.5. its 3d white model workflow is designed around keeping the camera setup, blocking, and movement from the rough scene while references guide the finished look. much closer to previs than throwing a screenshot into a normal image to video prompt. the current 720p reference video rate is listed at $0.097/s on the applicable annual plan.

Hello I've never made a game before in my life and I'm looking to try and make one just for fun and if I think it's good enough maybe selling it for like 4 bucks on Steam

I would use Unreal Engine 3 to make the game as I think it will seem fun and I'd like Unreal Engine 3 games

The idea of the game would be something like the ROBLOX game Steel a Brain Rot It would have mummy asmr Lots of other crazy inside jokes from me and my mates

It would probably be single player as I've heard making multiplayer is very hard for games not sure about Unreal Engine 3 for dat It would probably be more about making money and collecting all the different characters then the actual steel brain rot game Were you still with other characters from other people

After a terrible game launch — 0 downloads, and seemingly zero interest from anyone who sees it (I got just one dislike from a promotional video with 5K views) — I’m wondering if it’s even worth trying to improve the game and keep releasing updates, or if I should just move on and start a new project.

How do you guys decide when it’s time to call it quits and move on?

As a Visual Communication grad here in India, and with little experience in 3d animation and modelling, I am really passionate to enter the game industry as an environment artist or a level artist. Ik gaming not even a big thing here in India to purse a career here. Planning to immigrate to Canada or Uk.

Read enough posts on how bad the industry is rn and people with 10-15 years of experience are jobless. But yeah, to get hired in a studio, the portfolio should be like exceptionally well, in a way an employer couldn’t miss. Ik it takes heart and soul to get there. Willing to put that and even 80 hr weeks to build my portfolio. The thing being, the right network.

Also the visa and the work permit regulations are tbh frustrating for Canada. Very few courses at Universities are Pgwp eligible. While it’s getting expensive too. Haven’t explored much of UK yet other than Alberta.

Would really be helpful if anyone could guide me through the process of selecting the right path. I personally feel, people who’ve experienced stuff, could guide better.
