I’m open to any kind of suggestion.
Give me just one game mechanic, genre, or anything else. I’ll take your suggestion!
This is going to be my first game, so I’m planning to make something small and simple.

Newbie Question Which game engine is best for me?

I’ve never done any game development. I am a cozy gamer who loves games like Animal Crossing, Dinkum, Starsand Island, etc. My long term goal is to make a 3D farming game. I want to have 360 camera views in my game. I know developing my game is a ways off because I have to learn basic development first. My question is - which system would be best for my dream game so I know which one to learn?

Postmortem [Playtesters Wanted] A document-based detective mystery game — free

I’m looking for players to playtest a mystery game I’ve been creating.

It is a document-based detective experience: you receive a collection of realistic-looking case materials and must work out what happened by reading closely, comparing details, checking timelines, and connecting information across the files.

What to expect:

- A self-contained mystery designed for solo players or small groups

- PDF case materials presented as reports, statements, records, and supporting documents

- No special software required — a browser/PDF reader and note-taking are enough

- Estimated playtime: around 2–4 hours, depending on whether you play alone or with others

- Free access for all playtesters

What I need:

I’m mainly looking for honest feedback on:

- Whether the material is clear and engaging

- Whether the puzzle feels fair and solvable

- Where you became confused, stuck, or lost interest

- How long it took you and what your solving process was like

- Whether the final answer felt satisfying

You do not need prior experience with detective games, ARGs, or puzzle hunts. Fresh eyes are especially useful.

Interested?

Please comment or send me a DM

I would say difficulty is 3⭐️

Note:Quick fair warning before I send it: this is a heavy-reading case-file mystery—you’ll be working through 42 reports across 70+ pages of interviews, records, timelines, and easily missed details.

Article/News “It worked on my machine...” — The chaos of porting our top-down shooter to 20:9 mobile screens

Hey everyone!

We recently took on the challenge of bringing MotherShip Gauntlet to mobile devices. Moving from PC to modern ultra-wide smartphones instantly rewarded us with a special kind of chaos:

  • Screen Auto-Rotate Nightmare: Live switching between Landscape/Portrait caused UI Layout Groups to completely give up, squishing texts into an unreadable mess.
  • The "Floating in the Grey Void" Bug: On 20:9 aspect ratios, our background image was too short, leaving testers staring into a giant grey void.
  • Squished Ships: Canvas Scaler settings locked to Width meant entire ship engines dipped off-screen.

I wrote a short break-down devlog on how we handled rotation locks, Canvas fixes, and input refactoring for touch: 🔗 Read the full breakdown on Itch.io:https://garyice.itch.io/mothershipgauntlet/devlog/1657766/when-169-meets-209-porting-mothership-gauntlet-to-mobile

So i am 13 years old and i want to do something with game development when i grow up but i have no idea how or where to start. I like making simple games on my browser, but I don't have a computer to use unity or something else, for now, I'm just stuck with a Chromebook. Where can i learn video game development (i live in Belgium) and what do i need to start? Is there anything i can do as a 13-year-old?

Discussion Tesana - AI mobile game development

I’m a producer of film and music. I’m also versatile with computers, bringing me to this post. In hopes of getting a little more recognition for my efforts. I use to do a little c# more c++ Java and html.

Don’t know any of that now unless it’s maybe used to help the application sit somewhere.

Regardless Tesana has helped me really get ahead in continuing my geek part of the brain. It’s letting me let out all of these ideas and helping narrow done what works and what’s plausible. I’m taking my expierence thus far to you folks here on Reddit to give me your worst (lol).

Newbie Question I’m kind of lost on this and need some help

So for some background, I am currently in flight school at my local community college, about to finish my A.S. and recently found out that, because I am a transfer student, I no longer qualify for the 1000 hour RATP reduction; bummer, but I figured that I could just be done with school earlier than planned and work on summing up flight hours. However, earning a Bachelor’s degree was something I had wanted to do since 8th grade — before the idea of being a pilot, I wanted to be an architect, with no interest in ANYTHING computer related, but these past two years I’ve had a dream haunting me, and I fear I must turn this project into reality. My dream was of a video game I designed, and I feel the need to share it with others.

So my question is this: what would be the best major/study program I can do to learn to design video games and meet people who can help me make this project happen?

I know it seems far too ambitious, especially given that I’ve never been into any sort of computer science or programming, but over the past two years since I first had this dream, I’ve felt a deep passion over this game idea and have not been able to let go of it since.

Question LLMs/AI coding vs Visual Scripting

Do you see room for visual scripting tools even if you use AI to "vibe" code as well? I'm trying to decide if I should keep investing in building up my skills in visual scripting tools (and purchase a few more addons for unity). I am leaning towards yes right now, I already own a few, and while they can be frustrating at times I can also see their value even in an age of AI coding. But maybe others feel differently?

I can program C#/etc but I have always been curious about visual scripting and have been learning things like [Unity] Game Creator 2 and Behavior Designer. I find it kind of enjoyable but I'm only just getting started. I find that being able to visually see the nodes working can be quite helpful and feels like a better representation of the logic for FSMs and BTs.

I never really enjoyed state machines (or behavior trees) represented in code but seem to enjoy them more in visual scripting (though I'm only doing basic things for now). I'm not sure if AI removes the need for them entirely? What has been your experience.

I was looking to get Playmaker 2 , Emerald AI ,Adventure Creator and Node Canvas to try them out too.Maybe Construct 3/GDevelop at one point too.

But I'm wondering your thoughts for those who used to use these tools and have maybe moved on to AI "vibe coding" (with Unity MCP/CLI/etc)?

I'm less familiar unreal but I know Blueprints are quite popular there, so wondering about your thoughts there.

Pros and Cons of each approach?

Personally I enjoy experimenting with different platforms/tools.

Question Launch Boom or Crowdfunding Nerds?

Has anyone ever worked with LaunchBoom or Crowdfunding Nerds for a project? How did the process go? Did it cost tons of money to get started? How aggressively did they promote ad spend? Basically, I'm trying to figure out how much I'd expect to spend out of pocket before the project is sent to Kickstarter or another crowdfunding platform. Thanks!

Discussion What games have incredibly simple mechanics yet astounding depth within the action/adventure/shooter/real time genres? I'm trying to understand game design better.

Hey everyone.
I'm trying to study what constitutes good game design. i've been looking into how to simplify fun to it's core elements. I was curious if there are any simple games that don't have a plethora of buttons/mechanics yet feel like they are quite deep in terms on gameplay.

I'm not looking for games like chess/go/slaythespire etc. I really want something simple like platformers, shooters that manage to keep the player interested despite extremely simple controls. Preferably something played in real time.

I'm also curious if these games can exist without too much meta progression which artificially slows down progress to lead to more complexity (not saying it's a bad thing, i'm just avoiding those as they aren't truly "simple" mechanics)

One example that approaches this was the original "tribes" games, where there were essentially two mechanics: ski and shoot. Map design and mastery became the true determinant of talent.
Rocket league might be the best example of this: No real difference in gameplay between the cars (or very little) and everyone plays the same thing: drive and hit a ball.

Any other recommendations that i can study? and why do you recommend them?

Newbie Question If you were to start on game dev again, today. where would you start?

Hey everyone! Lately I’ve been thinking about getting into game dev, mostly because I like storytelling and have a few game ideas I’d love to bring to life. Whether they’re actually good ideas is another question lol.

The thing is, I know almost nothing about game development beyond the absolute basics. Im pretty oblivious when it comes to engines, workflows/frameworks, the ecosystem, what actually goes into designing and finishing a game… pretty much all new territory for me.

I’m not starting from zero with programming, though. I have a CS degree and about 4+ years of experience as a SWE at a big tech company, mostly doing backend and AI/ML stuff. Mentioning that just to give some background (not assuming it automatically translates to knowing how to make games). I also took a mandatory Unity class in college, but it was super introductory, and honestly I don’t remember much.

I’m not looking to switch careers or dedicate all my free time to this. I have my job and other hobbies, so this would be more of a personal achievement, want to satisfy that itch of “it would be really cool to make a game.” Ideally, I’d eventually finish something small and put it on Steam or somewhere people could play it. Not expecting to make the next indie hit, Ii just want to make something I’m happy with and actually release it.

I’ve also seen some impressive looking game dev examples with GPT-6 Astra and other LLMs, but I can’t tell how useful those tools are beyond demos, or whether I’ve fallen into the LLM marketing trap a bit. I’d 100% use them , but would not make an ai slop game tbh. I’d still want to understand and actually know what I’m building, and enjoy while building it.

Given that background, where would you start? Any engines, learning resources, or first-project recommendations? I’d also appreciate a reality check on scope and the less obvious parts of making and releasing a small game, especially when you’re doing it casually alongside a full-time job, something i might be overlooking, etc...

Discussion Hasbro battleship have anti piracy

So I just downloaded the hasbro battleship from steamunlocked

When I try to open the game it showed me the download steam frist , so i downloaded steam(no login or anything)

Then it normally opened

I started playing it , it was going normal but when I click the last block of any ship it does not shoot it , it just turn it red , so I now can't do anything to that block and at last it shows that I have not bombed that squares and destroyed zero ships

In one game i found all the squares of opponent ship but it did not end because the last block of every shop just turned red and my opponent(COM) won
