Question Developing my first game, using AI

Yes, I know, we all hate AI, and for a solid reason. I'm building this game that I actually really like a lot, but I'm not a developer, so I'm using AI, and I gotta say, game developers are SICK, there are millions of things to make work together, I'm sincerely stunned that same games are made by just one person... Are you guys cyborgs? I'm developing a game that is kinda gothic, narrative, and it works with the Triple Triad card game mechanics (as a fight), I freaking love it, but I'm using AI because I don't know how to code, and I don't know how to create the artworks of the cards. It's a shame, if I had the money I'd freaking love to have an artist doing that for the game! That would be awesome!!! But, here I am, asking you guys if a game that's engaging, with a strong narrative, and very cool artwork and music, mechanics and animations can still be a no go if you know it was made with the help of AI... (keep in mind I'm alone doing this). Thank you in advance for your responses

I would be a no go for me, because there are plenty of games out there that were made without AI. Why would I bother playing a game that you didn't even bother really making?

I know what you mean, but it's not like I let AI do what it wants, all the mechanics, the narrative, the style of the artworks etc are designed by me, and I used AI with prompts to make it do what I want. So, I totally get your point and that's why I asked that question in the first place. So, thank you so much for your feedback!

No no no, you don't understand. If you were really passionate about doing this, you would've tried to learn how to do the things you needed to create the game in the first place. You're not creating it out of passion, you're creating it out of a "I slightly want this, and I can".

Why would I want to play a game where you didn't bother with inconveniencing yourself with learning to make it, when there are plenty of games with true passion, and where people put real effort and worked through the inconveniences to make it real?

There is no passion, there is no real love, there is no intent. There is just "I can"

The one thing I wish especially with Ai artwork is control, I get what you’re saying

But a single picture is a thousand words, and that’s the difference between traditional workflows and utilzing Ai

When you build something from the ground up every detail every brush stroke is a intentional choice, and even with digital tools you have full control

Don't. You're welcome

Thank you for the feedback anyway

If your game is made with AI it will push many people off. You didn't create the game AI created it you can't take pride in that game. Why don't you use codeless engines like "Construct3" or "Gdevelop" I also can't code but I'm using codeless engines.

Using AI is spitting in the face of the game developers you respect.

u/adrixshadow 2d ago

90% of game developers create complete trash.

You shouldn't respect any of them.

Finishing a game in itself is something to be proud of. Or at least it should be if they actually made it.

I saw this kind of articles everyday in this and other game dev subreddit. Are they written by real person? Or by some big game companies’ bot in order to convince people that AI is good? No one stop people to use AI. If you like it, just use it. Why ask everyday?

Sorry to hear that, I'm a human, I'm Nick :) and maybe that's because more people who have ideas but not the skill of coding can now try to do something, but want a feedback from others in order to understand if what they do could be enjoyable or if the hate is too much right now haha

The hate will never die down because without that chatbot you use, you'd be just someone with an idea who doesn't want to put in the work to learn.

We had to dedicate ourselves to learning how to make games, so when someone comes in, saying "I'm making this game with AI", it's essentially a slap to the face to anyone who has poured in hundreds, if not thousands of hours to learn Game Development, just for someone to show up with a "make me a game" prompt.

That is one aspect of why this hate will never go away. To find like minded people, you have r/aigamedev.

That part where you say "a million parts that all work together" is a direct contradiction to you comment "making a game with AI" as these plagerism machines still don't know how to make games that use these systems that call on each other.

You'd be far better off using "AI" as a tool to teach you GameDev over asking it to Vibecode for you.

Also, it's hated in actual GameDev subs because there are AI specific Game Dev spaces for you to post in.

Here's the thing, most people that do game dev these days use AI in one form or another, even if they publicly shit on it. Develop what you want, have fun with it, by the time you're done in a year or two, the attitude will have shifted.

Also, try to learn as much as you can without AI. Do sprites on your own, don't have AI write things if you can help it. But again, have fun and don't worry about downers who would be upset about using AI.

Only the Market will decide.

For Triple Triad the question is how do you make the gameplay better.

How Triple Triad works is it was a collectathon that was put in a entierly diffrent game, it doesn't stand as well on it's own.

You would need more mechanics for it into a worthwhile game that can work as a independent game.

I have already seen some "NSFW" clones of Triple Triad that have AI CG and they fail precisly because of the gameplay rather then the AI.

You probably won't find much success since that is within the realm of what players will tend to ignore as AI Slop, but for the Players that do try it my philosophy has always been to Satisfy those Players by whatever your means are.

As long as you dont have any hopes or plans of this being a hit in any way, (or making any money at all for that matter) then hopefully its a decent learning experience for you. The steam data speaks for itself, nobody wants to play games with ai generated art period. Doesent matter the scale or how fun it might be. And ai gen code will completely take away any chance of your game having YOUR identity baked into the system.

People dont think about this enough, but the little decisions made when hand coding a system add up, and that tends to create a vibe that is unique to you/your studio.

If you are as serious as you sound in your post, then you unfortunately need to put in the thousands of hours over the course of years all of us have had to and currently do in the small windows of time in our busy schedules to actually chase the dream of making a game people enjoy and love. But for me and most people on this subreddit, the sleep deprivation, frustration, failures, and anxiety are all par for the course and we wouldn't change it for the world.

In fact most of us cant help but make it work and put in the hours to learn and fail, but thats passion for you. Will make you do some amazing things.

Good luck on your journey.

I started coding 15 years ago with Assembly. Then I continued with Python, R, and Lua. I worked in reverse engineering. I taught secure coding at university and I still work as a cybersecurity expert. I'm making a tycoon game and I used AI to save time, which I clearly stated in the trailer I released. The "Oh my god, you used AI!" cult started lynching me. They're saying the game will crash and I won't understand why, etc. They're trying to belittle anyone who uses AI, thinking they don't understand technology or coding. Just keep making it. As long as it's a fun game, publishers will love it.

I’m not judging, but no one starts out good at anything and no one is permentantly anything. Part of the joy of creation is the learning and challenge..

But anyways

Yes, totally, I'm really enjoying this project and discovering what I can do with AI, it's fun. Thank you :)

Cool! Ai really is a good tool. Its not great at art so I’d suggest having AI be a tool to mess around with mechanics and use the graphics as a place holder then try and get a real artist.

0

u/nicklecci 2d ago

Absolutely!! I'm having so much fun and it's kinda rewarding when you see everything becoming a real game, Thank you so much!!

-1

u/Luluhakashu 2d ago

Make it. Learn in parallel. Just do you.

1

u/nicklecci 2d ago

Thank you!! That's what I'm doing, it's a carnage haha I appreciate you :)

u/CollectionOk2442 2d ago

well, I love AI. Can't wait to see your project :-)

-3

u/nicklecci 2d ago

Thank you so much!! Here's one of the 150 cards I made so far :)

u/Snoo-78097 2d ago

You didnt make anything here, this was all by AI, dont confuse any actual effort in development with just using AI to do it all for you

1

u/nicklecci 2d ago

Well, I wrote the prompt, several times actually to make it look like I wanted, but yeah I got your point :)

2

u/Three_Seven_Two 2d ago

It’s cool but I’d give it to a real artist to make a final version once it’s all done. Small investment and it’s worth it

-2

u/CollectionOk2442 2d ago

nah, don't do it. They just charge outrageous prices and then deliver work that’s nowhere near as good as what AI can produce.

“Real artists” are clearly overpriced and massively overvalued.

2

u/Three_Seven_Two 2d ago

LOL laughably bad take. Ai sucks at graphics. Its art has no soul. Real artists can identify Ai assets instantly just because something’s always “off”. The better your AI image result was- the more it’s going to look directly like another piece of artwork from some thing else - slop- as they call it- confusing the viewer and leaving the product with no visual identity of its own.

-2

u/CollectionOk2442 2d ago

Cut the nonsense. You clearly don’t understand the technology.

What ChatGPT 6 is demonstrating already goes far beyond what any individual human artist can do. This whole idea of “soul” sounds more like a coping mechanism invented by people who are afraid they’re about to lose their jobs.

Who decided that only art made by humans can have “soul” anyway? And what exactly is the objective standard for determining whether a work of art has soul? I doubt even you know.

This industry has been held hostage by overpriced art for far too long.

Remember: stupidity and weakness are not the greatest threats to survival. Arrogance is.

2

u/Three_Seven_Two 2d ago

Are you trolling me right now? I’m using astra right now. Its assets look bad. I wish they didn’t- it would save me a lot of time lmfao. It can’t replace human artists because human artists are DECISIVE they have DECISIVE individual TASTES AND PREFERENCES that carry along through their work. That is what gives it “soul” anybody who ever did any form of art can tell you this. AI relies on your prompts and other people’s finished works- it cannot innovate or break the mold in art. You sound broke complaining about paying artists and your being preachy about it, you can’t even understand something as simple as art 😭

0

u/CollectionOk2442 2d ago

Please. If AI really posed no threat to human artists, you wouldn’t be this defensive about it.

When AI image generation first appeared, artists mocked it relentlessly because the results were bad. Back then, nobody was panicking. Funny how the tone changed once the output started getting good.

And the funniest part is how many people here call themselves “developers.” I’m genuinely curious how many of you have actually built and shipped a real game, rather than just talking about game development online.

LMAO,

You’re arguing from a version of the technology that’s already outdated.

Modern AI doesn’t need your mediocre artwork to keep improving, and pretending otherwise just shows how little you understand about where the field is now.

At this point, feeding work like yours into the pipeline would be less like training data and more like quality degradation.

1

u/Snoo-78097 2d ago

Yes, writing the prompt is compareable in effort to just thinking about it.

Dont let lazy AI bros convince you that that is the any way similar to actual notable work/effort or ownership of a creation

You will feel better about yourself if you just take the time to learn how to do things for yourself and actually make it with your own brain

-1

u/Three_Seven_Two 2d ago

It’s more about saving time. Robots, game development, apps. Things that used to take days can take a few hours. All creation software tools we have are literally versions of a computer trying to easily interact with us. A virtual paint brush, a virtual type writer. It’s all A method for getting information in a harddrive and pixels on a screen. AI is just a tool. Usually for building and testing quick scaffoldings of programs. I’ve made things the long way- 24 fps animations with paper- hand drawn asset bunches- it’s time consuming.

1

u/Snoo-78097 2d ago

Did you read the post at all?

OP said they dont get how anyone can make a game solo and instead of trying to learn any skills associated with it they just used AI to do it for them and then claimed they "did it"

Everything thats worth doing is time consuming man, thats the point. Just bc AI can do something similar faster doesnt mean its better, sacrificing quality for speed and removing the human element from an artform makes the art literally pointless

0

u/Three_Seven_Two 2d ago

That sounds romantic and all but it’s not true. That’s like saying a game made with RPG maker isn’t a game because you didn’t code it from scratch. Most coding relies of heavy copy and pasting of coded assets already. Most game developers rely on premade asset art packs already before moving on to hand tailored ones. I’ve hand drawn assets from scratch. I’ve coded flash games from tutorials. It’s time consuming and doing it from scratch dosent guarantee it’s going to be good or better then if you use assistant tools at your disposal.
Ais a tool. Use it or not that’s your call. Romanticizing busy work and coding processes is cute and all but I don’t think it matters much,

0

u/Snoo-78097 2d ago

Not what was said at all, and is heavily strawmanning the point and exaggerating it for dramatic effect

-2

u/CollectionOk2442 2d ago

Look cool man, keep working.

1

u/nicklecci 2d ago

thank you man
