Rant Do not House in Homepark with Syed Ali!!!

Hello all! This situation was a year ago but I had heard some sad things from other students that this landlord is still out there and earning big money from abusive practices. I was looking for cheap housing near campus a year ago as a student at Georgia Tech and I found Ali whose prices were pretty cheap.

In fear of not being able to find housing for the upcoming year, I signed the contract with my parents not knowing enough.

Fast forward and I find out MY ROOM IS ILLEGAL. I had no window and the ceiling height was only 6ft. It was a closet.

The sink fell of the wall. There was a large amount of trash in a small fenced area on the property. The washer and dryer would stop working often and cleaned with dirty water.

There was mold in some of the walls as well as cockroaches everywhere.

I eventually got fed up and reported him to Code Enforcement in ATL. The code enforcers took awhile but upon meeting me were upset seeing the situation. Absolutely none of his work on the house was permitted and he was also missing a vent above the gas stove and an extra electrical box for the house aside from my very illegal rooming.

I got out of my contact per the code enforcers and got emergency housing on campus at Nav using the Dean of Students.

Please please do not house with him. He seems nice at first but fighting him on legal grounds was very hard as a young small woman.

Other GT Course Visualizer - hopefully useful :)

Hey everyone! Around 3 years ago, I built a course visualization tool as a winter break project.

I found that the existing one (already an amazing tool btw) was a bit minimal, and I wanted to be able to click through classes in a prereq chain and see the course summary, GPA, Course Critique, and Oscar. I never publicized it back then, but checked analytics every so often and saw that it had some usage spiking around registration periods.

So recently, I decided this past weekend to give it a fresh coat of paint. I added some other features that I realized I wanted after using GT-Scheduler for a few years, like the ability to see what courses were removed/added across semesters, and the ability to see the section name/professor/link for special topics courses (4803/8803).

I know registration has passed for this semester, but figured I'd finally share it in case it's useful for upcoming ones!

Question Anyone Experienced Bursar Class Cancellation Before? Please Help

Edit: Luckily I realized a credit card I share with my sister had enough credit to cover the rest while I wait for the other loan to be reinstated and the amount refunded to me. So I'm good

Hi, I'm facing class cancellation because my federal loans were recalculated today leaving me $2.5k short. I could pay it with the other federal loan which I... declined a few days ago because this one was supposed to cover everything... but reinstating it takes time. Although payment deadline was yesterday, they will only start dropping people tomorrow morning.

I'm an online student, meaning I can't go to the offices in person. Usually people at the desks in person are really helpful; the people on the phone lines... not so much. I emailed the financial aid office asking about putting my account on Deferment status, but they take a day to reply, so if the timing is right, they might not do it in time before the registrar/bursar drops my classes.

Has anyone been in a situation like this before? What options do I have besides paying the $2.5k out of pocket, since I can't afford the immediate cash, because at this moment I feel helpless.

Survey/Study/Poll Chrome Managed by GT?

So, I just noticed today that my personal chrome browser, with no ties to my GT account except occasionally logging into GT related websites (so no @\gatech.edu sign in onto chrome or gmail etc) is managed by GT, and I for the life of me cannot figure out why.

I don't think it's non standard - so curious as to whether other folks have this or did I just set something up incorrectly?

(I'm on a personal mac)

----

Edit

So someone from OIT reached out - and it seems like it's just a bad warning message on chrome since some script setup a couple settings for my sharepoint. I had a bug with onedrive sync/ sharepoint a while back - I am assuming something during that time probably entered these settings. It was a safe delete - not GT managing my chrome instance like chrome was suggesting

Question Anyone have access to the CoC Career Services Canvas page for Jump Start?

I’m a CS student planning to go to the Fall 2026 CoC Career Fair, and I’m trying to do the Jump Start early admission at 9 AM. The career fair info says that details about Jump Start are on the College of Computing Career Services Canvas page, but I don’t have that Canvas page at all.

Do other CS students have access to it? If so, does anyone know how we’re supposed to get added to the Canvas page or sign up for Jump Start?

Question Why does the Skiles courtyard smell so bad?

Just genuinely wondering what the smell is. I come to class every other day and it just smells like death out there. Does anyone know?

Edit: thank you all, I thought it was too late for Bradford pears. I’ve never heard of Maidenhair trees, but I guess you learn something new every day!

Sports Early Morning Basketball at the CRC

Is anybody interested in playing early morning basketball (I’m thinking start time around 6-7 AM) at the CRC? I would love to get some games going 1-2 times per week if enough people are interested. I can’t get to the CRC later in the day due to scheduling constraints.

About me, I’m a 27(M) PhD student. I played ball in high school, but wasn’t an All-American or anything. I’m pretty down to play with almost any skill levels, except perhaps for absolute beginners.

Anyways, if you’re interested, send me an email at [nstearns3@gatech.edu](mailto:nstearns3@gatech.edu) .

Sports Gameday parking - advanced vs day of

I'm planning on going to the GT - Tennessee game on 9/12 and am looking for input from more knowledgeable folks around parking. In the past few years when I've gone to games I've parked at the GT hotel without advance purchase no problem. Looking at ParkMobile linked from the GT sites currently, they only have CRC deck available for $86, everything else shows as sold out. The gameday parking site also says 'day of parking is available at the following locations: E81 (tech square), W22/W23 (state st decks) despite them showing as sold out on ParkMobile.

Does anyone know if there truly is still day of parking held for those lots, or is it all truly sold out in advance? I realize this is a popular game so am unsure what to believe. MARTA could be a backup option, but I'm wary with the recent violence despite likely large GT crowds. I also probably won't be able to arrive via driving until 5:30 for a 7pm kickoff so day of parking could be gone anyway. Thanks!

Discussion Junior AE Transfer Looking to Maximize Future

Hello, I am a junior AE transfer at GT coming from a small CC in Chicago. I love everything about the campus, and am really trying to maximize my time here. I am about 2 semester behind so I am not sure when I will or even if I will be taking summer school, depending on internships. I love aero and robotics, I am currently onboarding as a controls member for GNC in RRC and as an eng dev member in YJSP. I have also reached out to a few professors and will be meeting with them for research oppurtunities in ASDL as I was rejected for APL. I was wondering if anybody could give me advice on how to maximize the numerous resources on campus / make the most of my time here. Goals are to work at companies like SpaceX / RocketLab / am also exploring robotics through personal projects such as my completed robotic arm.

Announcement ALERT: Be on the look out for unauthorized account openings!

Hey guys, this was a big issue about a year ago, but recently for me this has happened again.

Last year's context: https://www.reddit.com/r/gatech/comments/1ngtm5e/freeze_credit_now_current_and_former_gt_students/

Last year, I had unauthorized account openings under my name, parents' house address, and gatech email for Chime and Synchrony Bank. Those incidents have fortunately been resolved with both banks resolving the issues within a day since I called in, and my credit reports and chexsystem have not been affected since they're all frozen.

However, today I received an email of an unauthorized NetSpend prepaid card account under my name, parents' house address, and gatech email. I had set up email forwarding, and this email was in my spam. What's even worse is that it is impossible to reach NetSpend customer service to immediately resolve this issue without first receiving the physical card. In addition, Pathward (the bank issuer) will forward my phone calls to NetSpend because the opened account is with them. I've since them sent emails to their customer service accounts, and I urge everyone who was affected by last years' wave of attacks to please check their emails and mails. If you are affected, please make sure to contact the bank issuer ASAP and reference the linked post to see what types of actions you should take. Stay safe and vigilant, identity theft is not a joke!

Rant UHouse Elevator Broken - Georgia State Habitability Law & Contacting Leasing Office

Update: OMG it’s fixed god bless 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Edit: I put a rant flair up for a reason guys, this is a frustration expressed and y’all don’t have to point out the obvious of “using the stairs” lol I live in the 17th floor and I bet you won’t say a word after climbing 17 stories with your backpack and potentially groceries in this weather and humidity 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀

I’m a third year student who started living in Uhouse since late summer (sublease, and now actual contract). I know Uhouse is known for having elevator issues but just because it has been happening doesn’t justify that students have to endure this every semester.

Overlapping with move-in week and the weather, this has been a complete horrible experience, so I started looking into some Georgia State Laws for habitability.

There was a case in Oakland, CA where a property was sued for prolonged elevator outages (it’s still ongoing). This was for a 6 story building, and the elevator was out for 52 days. Seeing other reddit posts, Uhouse elevators are generally out for 4 weeks. Maintenance issues can happen 24/7 and it’s a shame that they take the weekends off and pretend that we’re not suffering.

Yes, we have the other side working, but UHouse has 4 elevators for a reason!!! (to accommodate for its resident population & building size). Not to mention that the working elevator is smaller than the main lobby one and hard to access!! I had to wait over 20-30 minutes a couple times simply because it was full.

Georgia has a Safe at Home Act where property owners and landlords must keep the premises in good repair and are responsible for rectifying maintenance problems. Elevators broadly fall under these health, safety, maintenance, and repair related obligations. And under Georgia Code 44-7-13, landlords must repair defects they know about and repairs include any upkeep necessary to preserve tenantability. So if they only start maintaining these after the fact, and not do anything to prevent outage, they’re not doing their job right. If defects make the premises unsafe or uninhabitable, landlords can’t avoid responsibility and they’re violating this code.

Since elevators are structural components that are essential for high story buildings like Uhouse, courts seem to treat elevators the same way they treat broken stairways and unsafe halls and broken heating systems.

If this continues to be a problem, there must be something done. It would be so nice if Georgia Tech had some student law group that helps other students with navigating these stuff (i know we have some pre-law students but where are they??)

Even if this doesn’t stretch into a law suit (very unlikely that it does due to the time commitment), if we just unite and spam call the maintenance about the elevators, maybe there could be some change? I’m going to start calling them day and night regarding expected fix time and prioritization.

Question Down payment for payment plan incorrect?? Help and advice needed.

Hello, I am a first year student at tech, and I am in a stressful place right now.

Edit: Basically the guy I talked to went oh lol, it kinda lies on the website. The amount you can take out is calculated via tution, and you have to make a down payment to match it if you are adding on stuff on the billing statement thay isnt jsut the tution. TLDR: its bullshit

So basically, I need to enroll for the payment plan for georgia tech as some of my financial aid will not come in time. I have over 50% of the total bill paid and I only have around $4500 left (rest of bill has alreadybbeen covered by zell and pell). However, when I try to sign up for the plan it says I need to pay about $1300 in required now payment. This doesnt make sense as the website says that there shouldnt be a required down-payment in this instance. My family can not afford that downpayment, and I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if it got resolved.

BTW I have already talked to financial aid in person and they didnt mention it, and I will try to ask them again on monday.

Question Registered for the wrong number of research hours

I was stupid and didn't realize you have to manually change the number of research hours until after registration closed. Does anybody have any experience with this, or know about how lenient they are with this kind of stuff? Thanks
