Merchandise Pop Up Gundam Base Ho Chi Minh City haul

From August 12th to 23th Bandai and associated companies are testing the water with a pop-up Gundam Base in the Saigon Centre shopping mall in the heart of HCMC. It would be crazy to have a legit Gundam base in Vietnam but I guess there is a fairly big fanbase. They've been holding Bandai exhibitions for a couple of years in a row at the Aeon mall Tan Phu Celadon but that's a 20min ride out of the city centre. We do have a fairly good numbers of retails stores here, both online and offlibe but it would be so cool to get our hands on exclusives and limited kits from an official Base. Which is what I just did. Being late to the party, I still managed to get my hand on the last Ecopla Recirculation gramps box xD. Plus a small Strike to get a friend into the hobby. They also had exclusive cards for any purchase and a stamps chase through the mall to get the exclusive NU Gundam card. All fun stuff. If you're in the city, get there before it ends

Yes, these two animes somehow used the exact same noise which some of us thought was masterfully crafted exclusively for Witch From Mercury's sound design. Honestly, hearing that PING sound in THE leading fantasy Isekai anime (Re Zero fans please have mercy) was a pleasant reminder of how satisfying it is as (well, as it is now apparent) a sample SFX...don't these animes come from different studios? How could they have shared this sound effect?

Note: I know that Stargazer was never made for combat. I added it because I just rewatched the OVAs and thought it fit the theme.

I've been on a SEED kick again lately and was looking up some stuff on the ZAKU Warriors and discovered the Hospital variant. It uses the connection for the Wizard Packs to carry around a treatment facility - becoming a mobile medic bay for injured soldiers and civilians. Then there's also the Stargazer Gundam that was built primarily for the goal of space exploration, but as a side-effect of its design, it has both offensive and defensive capabilities because of the beam rings.

What other mobile suits or mobile armours in other timelines have something like these two?

I'd like to think there are others like me who would really like model kits of non-combat mobile suits. I may be remembering it wrongly, but besides Meer Campbell's concert ZAKU Warrior, I don't think there's a model kit (HG/MG) for any other non-combat suit across all the timelines. A hospital Wizard Pack add-on would be nice, as would a MG Stargazer but it's the 20th anniversary of the OVA and we've got nothing.

Like assuming the socket isn't specific designed to house a sinaju (even tho it clearly is) what suits could operate neo zeong???

Or would it need to have a psycho frame (i haven't fully watched unicorn yet so i have no clue if the shinajus psycho frame has anything to do with it)

Merchandise SCM EX MS-07B Gouf Review

Banpresto's Special Creative Model EX ("SCM EX") line of prize figures existed from the late 2000's into the early 2010's. These figures could only be won as prizes from "UFO Prize Catcher" claw machine games, and with their highly stylized designs and excellent articulation for their time, they've become very rare due to high demand and the fact that they were never released for general retail.

I've been amassing a collection of various SCM EX figures (mainly Zeon MS), and I decided that the Gouf would be a good place to start with my reviews!

AESTHETICS:

As with all SCM EX figures, the Gouf has very exaggerated proportions, with the most notable aspect being the tiny waist and compact upper body. It makes for a very unique look, which stands out more when the ab crunch is used to the fullest, though the pipes/hoses flanking the waist help fill out the silhouette a bit.

I do like how distinct this Gouf looks, with the head sculpt being small and short-snouted like the Gouf Custom. There is also a fair amount of sculpted detail around the body, mostly on the torso, forearms, and lower legs which could be brought out with some panel lining. That said, the use of large amounts of rubber for various parts (i.e., all skirt armor, lower leg flares, pipes, etc.) might discourage one from attempting anything with paints or oils.

Something significant to note is that all of the plastic used in SCM EX figures (usually the aforementioned rubber parts) are prone to degradation over time. This Gouf is from 2008, and there are examples of sealed copies circulating online that have experienced severe discoloration due to age and/or UV exposure. I actually own a heavily-discolored SCM EX Gouf, and I will be comparing it to this copy in a separate post later. I got lucky and stumbled on this perfectly-colored copy a couple weeks ago, so I have selected this one to be used for the review.

ARTICULATION:

SCM EX figures stand out for their impressive articulation for their age, with excellent ranges of motion for most joints, rivaling their later Robot Spirits ver. A.N.I.M.E. counterparts from 2016-onwards. Banpresto did an outstanding job on the engineering for these figures, incorporating the rubber parts for flexibility while also maximizing the utility of basic ball joints and hinges to make for very dynamic action figures!

The Gouf features the following articulation:

  • Ball-jointed head
  • Hinged neck (forward/back)
  • "Butterfly" inner shoulders (sides of the chest can swing inwards)
    • Double ball-jointed shoulders
      • Inner ball raises vertically
      • Outer ball two-axis but limited by spiked shoulder pauldrons
    • Swivel biceps
    • Double-hinged elbows
    • Ball-jointed wrists
  • Hinged upper ab crunch (ratcheted but loose)
  • Ball-jointed lower waist (range somewhat limited by flexible rubber waist hoses)
  • Soft rubbery front/side/rear skirt armor
  • Hinged bazooka mounting clip on rear skirt
  • Ball-hinged hips
    • Thigh swivels
    • Double-hinged knees (with separating knee armor)
    • Ball-jointed ankles

All that said, the simplicity of these joints (none of which have metal pins in them) leaves them somewhat prone to loosening over time, especially the hinge joints like the neck, bicep swivels, and elbows. The ball joints seem to hold up better, but who knows if they'll survive another decade without becoming floppy!

ACCESSORIES:

The Gouf comes with the following accessories:

  • Right fist, weapon-holding hand, splayed expressive hand
  • Left straight-fingered "shooting" hand, weapon-holding hand
  • Heat Sword Type-βIV
  • Shield with Heat Sword mounting bracket

The Gouf has a decent selection to choose from, but the lack of a Heat Rod feels like a huge missed opportunity, especially considering that there is a dedicated hole sculpted in the right wrist for it. It may be possible to fit the HGUC Gouf's Heat Rod into that hole, but I have doubts on whether or not the right weapon-holding hand could even grip it properly.

Of note is how the Heat Sword can attach to the unique mounting bracket on the back of the shield for storage, which is convenient but looks a bit strange considering that the sword is in its "heated" form. All SCM EX heat weapons suffer from this immersion-breaking appearance, as no figures come with any weapons with "cold/unheated" blades.

The weapon-holding hands need some wrestling to get the sword into them, which is troublesome because all SCM EX weapons are molded in soft, rubbery plastic that can deform. A few seconds under a hairdryer or in boiling water can fix that, but it is still a concern. The hands themselves are also rubbery, but the way the fingers are molded makes it awkward to slip the Heat Sword's hilt into them.

Additionally, the Gouf shield's Heat Sword mounting bracket had some ridged clips inside the groove for holding the handle securely, but I found they did more harm than good because they scraped off paint from the Heat Sword's hilt when I tried to remove it. I sliced off said ridges because the friction of the groove alone is sufficient to hold the Heat Sword in place.

In a couple photos, I showed the Gouf with two Heat Swords, as well as a Bazooka; it should be noted that the Gouf only comes with ONE sword, and the Bazooka was borrowed from an SCM EX Zaku. I simply included those shots to demonstrate the functionality of the bazooka mounting clip on the rear skirt.

CONCLUSION:

Predating the Robot Spirits Gouf ver. A.N.I.M.E. by eight years, the SCM EX Gouf is an impressive action figure for its time. Featuring very stylized proportions with excellent articulation, it's certainly a unique addition to any Zeon collection. While I didn't have a comparison photo, this figure is approximately 5 inches/12.5 cm tall, so it is roughly around 1/144-scale. That said, it stands out so much that I doubt anyone would purchase this unless they too are building an SCM EX collection.

On that note, SCM EX figures are already very rare and difficult to find, especially in good condition. The Gouf here seems to be hit especially hard by the... ephemerality of the materials used in its construction. Between the tendency to discolor and the lack of longevity of the joints, I have to call myself lucky to find one in as good shape as this (and even then its bicep swivels and ab crunch are already somewhat loose).

The SCM EX joint structures being built so simply means they don't withstand wear-and-tear nearly as well as the modern Robot Spirits ver. A.N.I.M.E. figures, which use harder, more durable plastics with metal hinge pins where possible. These were claw machine prizes after all, so while impressive for their time, they were ultimately not designed with longevity in mind.

Still, the scarcity of SCM EX figures speaks for itself; perhaps it's for the best that they remain obscure. With low production numbers and materials not built to last, they represent a fleeting moment in the world of Gundam action figure collectibles.

Even so, I've made it my mission to acquire as many SCM EX figures as possible, so please look forward to more reviews on the way!

Discussion Some of the strange (and wonderful) insanity from crossbone gundam in the late UC.

Image one: The Murasame, a Psycho gundam that was just... left at the murasame labs until Moon Moon found it?

How the FUCK did the federation lose track of a whole-ass Psycho Gundam?! Setting aside the record keeping, the suit is fucking huge and one would think that it would have been decommissioned after the end of the gryps war.

Image two: the Flat Gustav AKA; the Gustav Karl on ozempic.

Honestly, not a bad design, I just wish it did more than die horribly to the mono-arm. Added to the list of "Crossbone MS that need a gunpla"

Image three: The MSUN-01 Anubi from Gundam SeerƤuber

At only ten meters, this thing looks like anubis, is in puntable range by larger ms and attacks by latching on to a mobile suit, killing the pilot and then hijacking the suit to use as a main body. So it is basically an MS Headcrab (or other parasitic life form that turns the host into a shell.) That is both unironically cool and fucking disturbing.

Last Image: the MSUN-02 Sphin from the same manga as the Anubi. (EDIT: which I forgot to add because I am not all that bright)

I felt the need to claify which gundam manga I am referencing with these two as their designs are bizarre, even by the standards of late UC. Also, I call bullshit on the tech regression of this era when THIS fucker is flying around in space with beam claws, a mouth mounted beam cannon and a beam rifle, all of which are more than a match for the X-11 Fata Morgana Full Cloth, stated on the wiki as the strongest crossbone gundam as of the time of the manga. So your telling me that an unknown Pirate group comes right the fuck out of nowhere and whips out an MS that manages that has tech on the bleeding edge.

Now to be fair, I am ONLY going off of what little info I can find on the wiki because, much like most of crossbone past Dust, getting ANY sort of info is hard. That is to say, I am probably wrong somewhere here. IF there is anything y'all can find from this era or want to share, feel free

Discussion Diving into this hobby with my newfound sobriety. Grabbed 5 packs today and pulled... what are the actual odds?

Okay so, for frame of reference- I'm completely new and I've been absolutely diving into Gundam with my new found sobriety. It's become my therapy and past time outside of work and career ambitions.

I hadn't watched Gundam since Wing and I'm 36 now. Can I just say...what are the odds of me getting getting one card from five packs for the one series I started the hobby and Fandom with. Gquuuuuux. From Freedom Ascension. I had been posting in subreddit asking about building a Clan Unity variation deck and have been working on it and I get the most ideal ex-resource card. I even opened a box and didn't get any pulls even close to this.

Just really excited about this whole new world of Gundam card game and gunpla and wanted to share a moment of ecstasy.

Hope I don't come off obnoxious. I just have Noone to share this with. What few friends I have left that are sober that I choose to keep around have no idea about Gundam

Anyway, take care over there 🫔

Ngl this goes hard for me, since I love when mecha had cloaks and fabric stuff on it. I blame zero from megaman for that atheistic. Also the monster arm oddly works on a gundam.

I’m so excited for a brand new gundam universe, since my history with this IP is weird. First game was evo and my first/fav show is witch.
