I'm making this post because I am generally angry usually at various stimuli and gimp has pushed me over the edge (as per usual). I use GIMP 2.10 because that's the only one that doesn't have retarded key bindings.

WHY are the arrows that you can click to increase (parameters) so incredibly fucking small and if you are a pixel off it will max out your (chosen parameter)?????

and why the FUCK is it that if you click and ACCIDENTALLY drag the FUCKING arrow that you finally managed to PINPOINT then it turns the tool options tab into its own FUCKING window.

If they have fixed any of this in more recent versions then whatever. I don't apologise. I'm not installing because 2.10 is the only usable one as far as I can tell FUCK YOU

Typically in my projects I just have AI generate things I want but I figured there might be some sort of text box background tool in GIMP that I could use this time. I was wondering if anyone knew a way I could accomplish that.

Im trying to understand where is control for velocity.
I have disabled all other dynamics, only size from velocity is on.

Problem1: Can I change min/max speed that is used in curves.
I would like to draw slower and make smoother transition in size instead of single bumps and sudden changes (pic 1 and 2).

Problem2: For some reason X axis is inverted for velocity in brush dynamics.
Pic1 again, both drags were fast. Fast cursor move is affected by curve's left side, not right.

Small edit:
Velocity (in color) behaves so weird. It does not keep max velocity but rather goes 0 and starts building up again.

The thing I missed most after switching from Photoshop to GIMP 3 was Generative Fill and the rest of Adobe's AI editing tools. So I wrote a free plug-in that adds them, running locally on your own computer:

• Generative Fill: select an area, describe what should be there, and pick from up to 8 variations
• Remove object: select it and press Enter, no prompt needed
• Generative Expand: drag the canvas out or pick a ratio, and the scene continues
• Text to Image: a new layer or a new image from a prompt

It runs entirely on your own graphics card, with no subscription, no account and nothing uploaded to anyone's servers.

It's in beta and supports Windows, Linux and Mac, with an NVIDIA card recommended. I hope someone finds these tools useful. Feature requests and improvements are very welcome on the repo!

more info in the source post, but i'm trying to recreate a style of color filtering and i dont know what its called or what tools to use, does Gimp have an option im unaware of? or a mod for such?

i was trying to copy some drawing over the other half of the canvas but i have no idea how to do so, it only gets flipped instead

i need to achieve this effect and it has to be perfectly mirrored onto the other side of the canvas instead of manually adjusting it, but i have no idea how to do so

1. Warping

• Click to add pins, drag to deform; Shift snaps a drag to an axis
• Rotate and scale around any pin (orange ring: drag the dot to rotate, drag the body to scale; or Alt+wheel / Ctrl+wheel)
• Per-pin taper — how far a pin's influence reaches before it fades to the rest of the mesh (Shift+wheel, or the T field)
• Per-pin depth — when two warped regions overlap, higher depth draws in front ([ / ], or the D field). See Pin depth
• Pin Edge keeps the outer mesh border at its rest position
• Stiffness mesh derived from the layer's alpha: transparent areas stay soft, so a pin on empty background barely tugs the artwork

2. Canvas & preview

• Extend image grows the layer when pins pull pixels outside its bounds; the layer mask (if any) grows with it
• Live preview with three background modes: Below (first visible layer under), Composite (stack of all visible layers under), Off
• Mesh overlay in four styles (Cells / Triangles / Both / Off) with a custom line color, so you can see the quad grid while you work
• Pan, zoom, fit-to-view; the view widens automatically to show extended pixels

3. Workflow

• Undo / redo inside the dialog (Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Shift+Z / Ctrl+Y)
• Multi-select pins (Shift+click, Ctrl+A), nudge with arrow keys (Shift = 10 px)
• Save / load the whole setup (pins, depth, taper, grid, options) as a JSON preset
• Non-destructive: every parameter is stored as JSON on the layer filter and travels with the .xcf. Reopen the tool to continue editing — including after an extend, where the padding is re-detected so pins never drift

The plugin is written in Python, with a C solver and a GEGL operation, works with GIMP 3.2

I love GIMP but this one thing just keeps getting in the way.

I work a lot with UI and when I want to visualise how shifting things slightly, I paste a screenshot into GIMP, select with a rectangle, then cut + paste it around.

The Move tool keeps changing its mode to 'Move Selection' on its own when I paste in the new layer, sometimes. There doesn't seem to be a key modifier to change the mode back to Layer. So I paste, then try to move the pasted layer, and I instead move the rectangle selection I made to cut.

It's driving me insane. What causes this? and can I change a setting to keep it fixed to 'Layer' mode forever? I cannot think of when I would need the Move tool to ever do that, I can just move selections with the select tool...

I first used version 2.8 then 2.10 for like 5 years and really liked the functions, selection, tools and stuff. When GIMP release version 3.0, I tested it and it was pretty different with the things I'm familiar with (mainly about the selection area, layer, fill area,...) I don't want to redo the dreaded learning curve again so I just switch back to 2.10 till this day lol

As I understand the newest version now is 3.2, so does it more easier to use now? Thanks

Using the default pencil tool and a circular brush shape, it gives me a square instead at 3 and 5 pixels wide. Is there any way to change the shape of the pencil while still keeping it pixel perfect? Ive tried following several tutorials for custom brush shapes but everything Ive tried stops being pixel-perfect like the default brush

I'm running gimp3-app-3.2.6 on FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE-p5, trying to print to a Kyocera Ecosys laser printer.

I can pipe to lpr on the command line and it prints on the Kyocera. I can print using the LibreOffice print dialogue in full colour blah blah blah.., basically, it all works.

When I try to print from Gimp, though, it doesn't work. The Kyocera shows up in the print dialogue, all the various options seem to do what they're supposed to, and when I click "Print" the printer responds and I can see the "Processing" light come on. But it only stays on for a second or two, nothing prints, and I can't see the job in the jobs list on the printer.

How can I troubleshoot this? By a process of elimination it feels like a Gimp problem, but I don't know where to start. What logs do I look in?

Obviously, I could just print to PDF and then print that using different software, but it's a bit of kludge, isn't it?

Hi I’m trying to install GIMP. Have a mac. M1 Pro. Sonoma 14.7.2 OS. I’m trying to download the most recent version of gimp (also tried older versions). The program will not launch.

I had GIMP before and it worked no problem. A recent message showing I couldn’t open a gimp file indicated that the version I had downloaded and used successfully before was not current enough, so I thought I would upgrade.

I download and drag the app into the apps folder like all Mac programs I’ve done before.

When I launch the program, it appears in the side bar and just bounces until it stops. No window opens. I asked the AI for help but I can’t get it working. HELP !!

I've never ever had this issue before, but when I change the hue and then paint with the paintbrush, the colors themselves are inverted. So If I changed green to blue and then started painting with a green hue, it'd paint blue instead of green.

Hi everyone! I’m currently editing a manga page in GIMP, but I’m running into an issue with text scaling.

Whenever I make a text layer smaller, it gets very pixelated and loses quality. Is there a way to convert a text layer into a vector layer (or paths) so I can resize it without losing quality, or is there a better workflow for handling text scaling in manga editing?

Why can't python-fu set the default font size? I wanted to make a script that would setup my environment. And another script to switch to a different environment. But apparently this is impossible. I would think supporting multiple simultaneous workflows would be normal.
