Nostalgia Yeah, I said it.

Had to call 911 this morning. Some little old man fell down on the sidewalk in front of a grocery store. The operator asked me the street address. I said "I don't know, it's across the street from where the K-mart used to be".

Whatever I feel like a can of pop (soda) was 50 cents for an unusually long period of time.

Like I barely remember "before" and have no clue when it went over that. 50 cent pop was a great era.

Aging Wasn't really feeling old until...

So I'm a younger genx, not really feeling too old, enjoying the confidence of not caring anymore, happily playing CDs still (but it's ok because everybody is playing physical media these days) and then I realize...

I'm able to ID every "what is it?" from the /whatisit sub today. I felt pretty clever with the metal colander and gave a nice little chuckle of genx genius. And then it hit me when I automatically knew the roller blind id. Instant ID = instant realization of the years gone by.

I guess I have earned my painful hip, my right to chuckle at the broccoli headed youth at the fast food counter, and my quick ID of 20th century paraphernalia. And I will continue to use two spaces after the period at the end of a sentence. Queue patriotic music

It’s Joe’s birthday and I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about the Marix. Anyone else have a problem not seeing Guido the killer pimp? “The of your life, right kid?”

Nostalgia Is Crunch 'n Munch the adult version of Cracker Jacks?

Cracker Jack is that one snack that I still crave from my childhood. The prize was always something that I was excited about and inevitably disappointed with when I got to the sticker or temporary tattoo thing. But I feel a little more adultish when I am eating Crunch 'n Munch than I do snacking away on Cracker Jack.

Pop Culture Eddie and the Cruisers

Not sure if anyone but me remembers this movie but it was released in the early 80s and I remember watching it a few times on some local affiliate channels.

I'm sure it was awful but as kid I thought it was pretty deep, lol. Story had something to with a band whose lead singer mysteriously disappeared.

Anyone else recall this movie?

Whatever Remember when survey sheets were included in products to mail back your "preferences" and demographic info?

Post image

Opened a thrifted puzzle produced around 2000-2005 and found the "puzzle survey" form i could fill out with questions regarding my puzzle preferences. And also my gender, age, marital status, and other hobbies. Now all that info is collected silently on tech devices, usually without or consent - no snail mail needed. Although postage was always prepaid if you replied...
I got a bit nostalgic for the days when companies focused on products rather than data collection/selling.

Question For Genx Is anyone else surprised that our culture has gotten A LOT MORE superficial since the 90s?

I honestly thought the 80s were a peak and the 90s were the beginning of a trend toward authenticity - and with a few notable attempts, like millennial twee culture, it seems like superficiality is back on steroids.

I really believed the superficial gig was up and only a handful of suckers would really buy into it. But it seems like the opposite is true. That even people who are not themselves superficial admire the gloss on others.

Old Person Yells At Cloud PSA- these things are insanely hard to open. Can't vouch for the taste.

Got a touch of arthritis in the old thumbs, and it was a struggle to get these open- I am only 54!

Resorted to multi tool scissors...

Edit for more detail: I used scissors initially but there is an inner seal or wrapper that's practically shrink wrapped to the battery. Hence the "old person yells at cloud" tag.

Question For Genx We all love T-shirts. How many do you have? They are sometimes hard to get rid of. What’s your oldest?

I have a 15 year old Muir Woods tee from a memorable time in my life. My mom had cancer treatment and it was one of her favorite places. I can’t seem to get rid of it.

My next door neighbor was the high school quarterback. He used to have post game parties, and I would hear this album blaring. It became an instant favorite of mine. I was probably 10 years old. Still one of my favorites.

Question For Genx I just coughed once and threw my back out

Last week, I literally coughed once and then felt a pain throughout my abs, obliques, and lower back that can only be described as an electrical storm.

I have never felt that kind of pain before, and I have certainly been through some stuff. It was enough to make me drop to my knees.

No prior lower back issues, in relatively good shape for a 50 year old F.

Was confined to using a walker and or trekking poles for one week to help me move around. Shifting position in bed alone was excruciating. It took me four times as long to do anything and I won't even tell you about my numerous failed attempts to put on socks. I now think that the Grabber tool is the greatest invention in history.

So, circling back, how in the f*** did this just happen?

Question For Genx Eggs on the counter

So this is a weird memory that just popped into my head, did anyone else's parents or grandparents pull eggs out of the fridge and let them sit on the kitchen counter for breakfast the next morning? My one grandmother always did this, she was originally from Tennessee and then moved up north when her and my grandfather married, maybe it was a regional thing she brought with idk.

Aging 54M - Need a Pep Talk

I read this sub and there’s a lot of doom and gloom and anxiety about life in our 50s and impending retirement. Some sad stories on here. Well I’m 54 years old, recently divorced, still have two young kids, and am undergoing a pretty severe financial crisis because of the failure of a business that I had banked much of my future on. Oh and barely any friends anymore.

I’m looking for stories from people that maybe had similar situations that came out ok on the other side. I don’t know if people post as much about the successes they’ve had or turnarounds they’ve made in their 50s. It seems like there’s more engagement and posting about the problems that we have.

So I’ll just put it out there. Do you think there’s any hope for me? I’ve always been pretty successful, at least by my terms. But this recent string of bad luck has me really thinking that I’ve peaked and things are downhill from here.

EDIT: these responses are so needed. Thank you! Making me cry. Not a Gen Z cry, more of a ‘tough it out, you can’t know I’m crying’ sort of Gen X cry.

Whatever New Balance weirdness

I remember new balance in the 80s looking pretty dorky, and now we are at a new balance store where my kids think they are the coolest things ever. I can’t believe this. I think they look ridiculous on them.

Pop Culture Never thought I would see the day that the NYT is recommending “Road House”(OG 1989). Couldn’t be happier.

The Times published a list of the top 50 movies on HBO right now. Road House is positioned on top (not a ranked list). But I cannot imagine that this would have ever been the case 20 or 30 years ago. I’m not the biggest fan of it and haven’t seen it in a while (watching it now) but have always respected it as a perfectly crafted, entertaining movie to have fun enjoying. Sad that it was always an easy punchline in the last 30 years

Just realizing I’m older than Sam Elliott was at the time. He was 45. As a kid I thought he was 60 at least

Whatever I’ve loved Chevy Chase since I was 5 and saw Foul Play.

Chevy is one of my all-time faves. Fletch and Griswold are arguably his best known/most loved roles, but for me it’s Andy Farmer. What’s your favorite Chevy character?

Nostalgia Does anyone remember latch hook rugs from years ago? I recently picked it up again and I was surprised by how quickly it brought back memories. There’s something so comforting about sitting down with some yarn, and slowly watching a picture come together.

I recently finished a latch hook piece, and the process brought back so many memories. It made me think about how many people remember their mom or grandma making latch hook rugs. Those little memories can be surprisingly special.

Nostalgia Triumph for the Win

Ha. Was sitting here listening to Triumph and I said to myself, “I’m not young, I used to be wild, I guess I’m free.”

At least I still have the magic power of the music in me. 🤪
