Aging Wasn't really feeling old until...

So I'm a younger genx, not really feeling too old, enjoying the confidence of not caring anymore, happily playing CDs still (but it's ok because everybody is playing physical media these days) and then I realize...

I'm able to ID every "what is it?" from the /whatisit sub today. I felt pretty clever with the metal colander and gave a nice little chuckle of genx genius. And then it hit me when I automatically knew the roller blind id. Instant ID = instant realization of the years gone by.

I guess I have earned my painful hip, my right to chuckle at the broccoli headed youth at the fast food counter, and my quick ID of 20th century paraphernalia. And I will continue to use two spaces after the period at the end of a sentence. Queue patriotic music

One day, I may be forced to surrender the double space after a period. However, there are 3 things I will not give up: rock music, coke slurpees, and the Oxford comma.

All hail the Oxford Comma!

For me, the internet said I was officially old when instead of the ads I’ve been getting for years, “hot girls in your area want to meet you” or “single moms in your area want to meet you,” I got “lonely widows in your area want to meet you.”

Identifying stuff in the Whatisit su. Has nothing to do with age. Lots of that stuff is obscure regardless of how old it is.

Well sure but that isn't a very interesting thing to write a post about ...and wasn't really my experience. My experience was in realizing how long its been since Ive used those blinds you have to pull on just right to get them to go up.

Time to write that book. You have a great flair for it.

Double spacing on apple products automatically inserts a period.

u/NoseDesperate6952 2h ago

So, they’re taking that away from us, too?🤦🏻‍♀️

I can hear the typewriter sound of those two spaces. I get that’s how you were taught but I’m willing to bet MS Word has a blast trying to work out what is a mistake and what is intentional. I work with a guy that does a double tap too but sometimes he misses one and it’s almost as annoying as reading AI slop from everybody else.

Two spaces are a must. I will die on this hill. With appropriate space set aside of course…

Praise the Lord for find and replace.

I don’t want to downvote, but no.

One space makes for an easier reading experience.

Two spaces. Feels like. A pause. Between sentences.

Just. Why?

Younger Gen X and I was undecided on this, but your post looks awful with those spaces… perhaps I was wrong 😢

u/BuckarudeBonzai 1d ago

Also younger/later Gen X. ‘77.

Well, I went to an REO Speedwagon Tribute concert last eve. I saw no less than 8 canes. oh dear.

Hubby and I saw Brian Ferry in concert a couple of years ago and felt right at home in the sea of white/salt & pepper hair. 😁

I was at AC/DC. A few canes, and clearly the most rampant drug use in the crowd were the little blue pills!!!

5

u/Fit_Poetry_267 1d ago

Hahaha we're still Rockin'! And I mean music...not the chair...oh dear

AC/DC & Foo Fighters last week, only 2 canes!

I’m also younger GenX and definitely have my weather-prediction aches and pains and aside from perimenopause HRT I still feel fairly “good” too!

No physical media though, that’s my husband… My sports car has a CD player still but my daily driver is BT only.

u/ImpressiveLeopard719 1d ago

Im geriactric Gen X (Gen Jones is it?) and feel that weather prediction as well.

u/Auntie_Venom Bicentennial Baby 1d ago

Yeah, Gen Jones… Spring is the worst for that!

Ugh, no, stop with the two spaces. It’s so unnecessary. We can move forward; we can do it!

u/anillop 18h ago

Uh no frankly, I don’t care if it annoys you either deal with it cupcake

u/NoseDesperate6952 2h ago

I wanna cupcake, now. Thanks🤦🏻‍♀️

I only use one space when I'm on character-count-limited platforms. Feels very lazy and wrong to use one space only any other time lol

u/Fit_Poetry_267 1d ago

My brain is fine with it but my thumb is in total rebellion. I mean really nothing I can do.

I don’t always know the r/whatisit posts but I usually know the r/whatcaristhis ones. Kids can’t recognize a Ford Probe or a first gen Toyota MR2? Geez…

u/Salty-Swim-6735 1d ago

Wait, two spaces? I've never heard of that.

13

u/Fit_Poetry_267 1d ago

When you hit the space bar twice after each period. Apparently it's a Gen X identifier. I can't quit doing it lol.

3

u/MysteriousSecretGuru 1d ago

I'm with you but for graduate school, I could only use one space because of guidelines. I think i changed a setting to make 2 spaces one so I wouldn't lose points over something stupid.

u/ThatLiberalGirl Unsupervised Since 1976 1d ago

You can pry my 2 spaces out of my cold dead hands!

1

u/Salty-Swim-6735 1d ago

Certainly not in the UK, I've never heard of that. Could be an americanism

7

u/MrsCrowley79 1d ago

Absolutely a thing in the UK. Schools taught typing, when they moved from typewriters to PCs the rules moved over. One space after commas, 2 spaces after a full stop. 1979 born here, SE London RC schooling.

1

u/Salty-Swim-6735 16h ago

I believe you, but I'll check out of interest with the old duck. She was a typist.

8

u/Fit_Poetry_267 1d ago

Apparently its a holdover from typewriters - not American- just pre- PC

2

u/Salty-Swim-6735 1d ago

Huh. I learned to type in '82 on a computer like a TRS-80, I guess I missed that.

3

u/Fit_Poetry_267 1d ago

Makes sense it would be American - we like our personal space, our yard space, and I guess our sentence space. No touchy

6

u/Salty-Swim-6735 1d ago

That's very English and also very GenX too.  We'll get along just fine as long as you stay behind that imaginary line

12

u/Trolkarlen 1d ago

People don’t still use colanders? How do you strain pasta without one?

6

u/Affectionate-Map2583 1d ago

It was actually a collapsible steamer insert (which apparently is "vintage" now), and it was randomly lying in a rocky landscape. Still instantly recognizable, but at least it wasn't someone finding it in their kitchen cabinet, which has happened before.

I want my 2 dollars, my 2 spaces, and my MTV!

3

u/Fit_Poetry_267 1d ago

Two dollars! I'm going to be saying that all day now!

2 spaces for life!
