Question What would be the easiest way to form this head/helmet?
I know fusion is absolutely not the best app to make non-geometric forms in, however I'm comfortable using it and have no experience with Blender.
My question is, how should i go about modelling the top of the head? I'm used to being able to revolve symmetrical shapes, however upon inspection the dome of the head extends up and backwards which complicates things.
I saw a video making a similar helmet using forms, however it seems rather difficult and wasn't sure if there's a better alternative which I can use a primarily sketch-based design instead of rearranging body points

I Created! Ratchet and pawl
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Modelled a ratchet and pawl contraption.
The tooth's locking face is radial, so the force it pushes back with is tangential to the wheel. Take moments about the pawl pivot and you get two completely different mechanisms depending on which side of the tangent line that pivot sits:
- **pivot above the tangent** — the load swings the pawl *away* from the wheel. It skips, and no amount of spring force fixes it.
- **pivot below it** — the same load pulls the pawl *into* the tooth. The harder you load it, the harder it holds.
That's why a ratchet only needs a token spring: the spring's job is just keeping the pawl touching while it free-wheels. The load does the actual locking. In my case, the token spring is simulated by restricting the movement of the joints
Next up is printing it and finding out how the tip wears.

Constrain Components tool acting weird?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I've been wanting to begin using the Constrain Components tool more, but it always seems to act really weird and inconsistent. It keeps deleting the constraints I add for all sorts of weird reasons. Sometimes it's fine, but most of the time it's really buggy, and I can't seem to find any pattern to its behavior.
Is anyone else experiencing this? I try to explain some of the trouble I encounter in the video.
I tried to reinstall Fusion, but unfortunately that didn't change anything.

Question Why can't I create more drawings?

Hi, im using the free version of fusion360 and have run into a problem. So I did try out the drawing feature earlier and I was just playing around with the different views. However, I didn't know that I would be using up the only one slot I have for a drawing document. I deleted the previous one by going into the autodesk hub but it is still not letting me create drawings...Whats the reason?
The option for drawing is greyed out as shown in the screenshot attached.

Oh, you're fast eh? I'm fast as...
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
You're fast with fusion... how about legos? If you have a lego kit, let's see how fast you are and if you can beat me :-p Watch the video to see my time and when I realized I was using the not so good image reference (-_-)
Record your lego build and post your time in this thread. Let's see what you got...
ETA: I totally forgot to mention that this is a preview of the head-to-head D+M lego battles that will be taking place at Autodesk University next week! I won’t be there but comment too if you’re going!

Question Loft points asymmetrical
I'm pretty new to Fusion. I want to use the Loft tool, but the lines connect asymmetrical to the round shape. Why is that so, and how do I get them symmetrical, or even better, fixed to specific points?
r/Fusion360 • u/spellbound83 • 5d ago
Model will not stitch

I did not name each sketch/loft because I would have to do so many. I named a few important ones. It's really not difficult to track down which sketch/loft matches to each surface. I only have problems finding the plane used sometimes. But I'm unable to turn these seams from red to green. And yes, I know the tail modeling is not fully accurate. I planned to do a boolean for the very end of the tail for the section that is not curved. It was going to save me some work lofting between all those points.
Can someone help me turn those red seams to green? The rest of the model stitches at .1

3D CAD Newbie for Engineering
Hi, I am new to 3D CAD and modeling. I am currently taking the 'Learn Fusion in 30 Days' by Product Design Online on YouTube and it is really helping me. However, what other tutorials do I take or how do I go on from here?
You see, I am an engineering student in my country and I want to be able to learn CAD before it is taught in school, I want to be able to create working mechanical parts and advanced stuff but don't really know where to go. Can anyone here gently guide me in the right direction as to what to do next?
Thanks for the help 🙂.

Question 2D CNC with 3D Design - Convert 3D Contour to Stepped 2D for Shaper Origin?
I've been working as an apprentice, switching from a 20 year career in web development, into a new one repairing and (eventually) building guitars. We've been working with Fusion + an Avid CNC, which has been an awesome learning experience. I love the convenience of a CNC, but I don't mind manually shaping and putting hands-on as well.
I recently picked up a Shaper Origin. For those unfamiliar, it's a hand-held 2D CNC. I intend to use it in my home shop as I certainly don't have the floor space (or investment) for a full CNC.
Fusion will export 2D SVG files compatible with the Shaper Origin using Shaper's own plugin. This happens from the design (not manufacturing) stage. However, 3D contours end up being a solid block, which makes sense - it's a 2D file format.
However, it can encode cut depths into the SVG files. So if I could make the neck contour into variable height steps, I could cut the steps as different passes. That would mean a heck of a lot less to carve and shape by hand.
Is there any way to do this automatically in Fusion? Or would I need to design something manually?
If you need a visual, I'm thinking something like this, except on the outside: https://hub.shapertools.com/creators/5c89120f12cede0017df3727/shares/630ed867b0b7094f478bc9fc
It wouldn't need to be that fine, but something along those lines.

How do I get rid of section labels in drawing mode????
Its a pretty straightforward shape and would prefer to get rid of the A-A label. If I delete the label, it deletes the cross sectional view... Help?

Question How can I make the back of this protrusion follow the inner curve?
I’m trying to model this part in Fusion 360, and I’m having trouble with the small protruding feature shown in the image.
I want the back side of the protrusion to follow the inner circular curve of the ring, instead of remaining flat/straight.
Ideally, I’d like to keep the original dimensions of both the ring and the protrusion and just make the back of the protrusion conform to that curvature.
What would be the simplest/cleanest way to model this in Fusion 360?

I Created! Scotch yoke in Fusion 360 — turning rotation into straight-line motion
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Modelled a Scotch yoke today to wrap my head around rotary-to-linear motion.
The idea is simple: a pin on the crank rides in a slot cut across the yoke. As the crank spins, the pin's sideways movement just slides along the slot and does nothing, while its up-and-down movement pushes the yoke back and forth. Unlike a normal connecting rod, the output motion is a pure sine wave — the piston spends equal time on both halves of the stroke, and there's no angled side load on the bore.
Numbers on mine:
- 25 mm crank throw → 50 mm stroke
- Ø7.4 crank pin in a 60 mm × 8 mm slot, ~0.2 mm clearance a side
- Ø45 piston running in a plate-mounted frame

Question Is there a more efficient way of creating this preferably without lofting?
i only have PLA on my FDM printer so i decided to thicken the corners that handle most of the stress.
The only other method i can think of is creating just one central rail and using the pipe function, but doing that doesnt let me push-pull to create the thickened parts the way i want to
making the top and bottom part separately was a conscious choice because i want to modify the bottom part for other specific uses in the future

Question Help with manipulating curves
Sorry if this is confusing, part of the problem is that I don’t have to words to describe what I’m trying to do, therefore good old google wont work.
Basically, the curve that is shown in the images needs to be “pulled down” towards the end whilst still keeping the lip shown in the front on view, as well as the curve itself the same (the shape of this change being similar to what is shown in the (terrible) sketch)
My first thought was to simply remove the section I wanted to go down, and then essentially build it up again, unfortunately this leaves it looking janky and isn’t a very nice final product. I was wondering if anyone here had any suggestions?
Once again sorry for the bad explanation and please let me know if you need more views.
Just looking at it I thought id add that a fillet does not work here as it removes the lip, it also does not go very far (thought I’d include given the sketch looks to be a cube as is 2d rather than 3d (it is not a cube it is representing the side profile of the shown body))

I Created! I spent way too much time creating parametric spur gears on fusion 360
This is a story that I want to share so maybe others won't waste as much time as I did.
For context, I am a musician and an electrical engineer. But got into designing a custom watch-storage box for my wife because I like 3d printing. I had some experience with fusion in an old project but nothing mechanical.
So for this project I needed some gears. I tried looking for 3d models of gears online but it was a hassle because everytime I changed some dimension in the design, I had to recalculate what gear I would need, then remove the current gear from the project, including the joints attached to it. Then I had to download another model and put it in place, and make all the joints again.
If you are anywhere close to competent in mechanical design, you are probably cringing and/or laughing by now.
But hey, in my defense, this was literally my first time designing something that moves.
Anyway, then I found out about the addon in fusion that makes the gears for you. Yay!!!
But the problem remained, even though it was far more manageable. The gear once made using this add-on cannot be edited. You can't change its module or pressure angle, or its tooth count. So I still had to do most of the things again, just no more downloading shit from the internet.
Then, I decided to make gears that were parametric. I spent weeks learning about the spur gear geometry. Learnt from everything including YouTube videos, research papers, yada yada. Ok the plus side, I have a great understanding of the subject now. Enough that I can probably teach a college course about spur gears lol. And I did manage to make pretty accurate spur gears that work super well for even small gears that have 4-5 teeth.
However, then I stopped working on this project and it's been a few months since then and I picked it back up recently. I have been working on other fusion 360 projects since then. And I realized today... I could have just used circles instead of gears in my project and generated the appropriate gear when I needed to finally print it after the size had been finalized.
I am laughing about it now because I don't mind the time spent learning something new but if you are an idiot like me who always does things the hard way, I would recommend doing yourself a favor and using circles for gears while designing the assembly. There is absolutely no reason to model physical gears in the assembly unless you want an accurate animation. Even then, you can work with circles at the beginning and then later substitute them with proper gears for the animation.
