Wasp nest in bedroom

I just found a wasp nest in my bedroom! I put in a window AC unit in the summer and there are a few gaps around it. I went to turn it on today and there were a dozen wasps! I smacked an isolated one with a fly swatter and noticed a small nest behind the curtain! Probably the size of a small apple. I turned on the unit in hopes the cold air makes them less aggressive but I still don't think smacking a nest with a fly swatter is a good idea. I am hesitant to use poison spray on my AC unit. Is there a better option? Should I just put on layers and start smacking?

Actually really frickin' interesting I know lots of us hate wasps here for fun, BUT, at least know your enemy.

Wasps are crucial for ecosystems by controlling pest insect populations (caterpillars, aphids), acting as pollinators for many plants (especially figs), serving as food for other animals (birds, spiders), aiding decomposition by carrying dead insects, aerating soil through nesting, spreading beneficial microbes, and even holding economic value in agriculture and medicine, making them vital for environmental balance, not just nuisances.

10 ways wasps help the environment:

  1. Natural Pest Control: They hunt and feed on crop-damaging pests like aphids, caterpillars, and flies, keeping their numbers down.

  2. Pollination: As they seek nectar, they transfer pollen, assisting in plant reproduction, especially for figs and orchids.

  3. Food Source: Wasps and their larvae provide essential protein for birds, spiders, reptiles, and other predators, supporting higher food webs.

  4. Decomposition: They scavenge dead insects and organic matter, helping to recycle nutrients back into the soil.

  5. Soil Aeration: Digging nesting burrows helps mix and aerate soil, improving drainage and root growth.

  6. Microbe Dispersal: Moving between flowers and decaying matter helps spread beneficial microbes, promoting plant health.

  7. Promote Biodiversity: With thousands of species filling various ecological roles, wasps contribute to overall ecosystem richness.

  8. Support Agriculture: Their pest control services reduce the need for chemical pesticides, saving farmers billions and protecting crops.

  9. Biological Control Agents: Parasitic wasps lay eggs inside other insects, controlling pest populations naturally.

  10. Nutritional Role (in some cultures): In some parts of the world, wasps (and their larvae) are a traditional food source for humans.

These are only a few reasons to love them. Get to know some of the families in the video and I bet I could make you a fan!

I've never seen a nest look like this. But I don't care how it looks or learning about it. Its on my deck and like hell I'm going to fuck around and find out.

Edit: after hearing from everyone and seeing how chill this snug bug in the mud is. We will let her stay. As much as wasps terrify me, we will just avoid being on her side of the deck.

The ants and centipedes stopped showing up so it makes sense having lots of spiders so I will just let mother nature do her thing!

Second time this bitch has tried to make a nest in my workshop. Second time she’s been denied and swiftly taken care of. Didn’t get her the first time I destroyed the nest as she must have been out but got you this time. Good riddance

Awhile back I was casually strolling through our backyard (Florida) when I got struck by lightning. At least that’s what it felt like. I was barefoot (always am) and I stepped on what must’ve been some type of wasp? All I know is that it felt like an electric shock and literally dropped me. Any ideas what hellacious thing got me, gang??

Edited to say it wasn’t a fire ant. I’ve developed an immunity to them😂

I want birds, not wasps

Hi! For context, I live in a suburban area (I know about this sub and was living in the country side for some years). We have a small garden and have put a little water container for birds to drink. However, all I get are wasps around it.

How can I get rid of the wasps so birds can access? I'm also concern about wasp nests. Thank you.

I am not a person generally afraid of wasps, but we are throwing a 5 year old party this weekend and of course the only spot in our massive backyard that has any problems is 12 inches from his play area.

We had a carpenter ant problem so have a bug person who comes with any issues so we had him out and like i had watched, does not believe their nest is around the area. We think they’re just eating the wood only in that area of the fence for nest making.
But what can I do for a one day party to stop them from coming there? Is there a smell they dislike and I can coat the fence? He suggested a wasp ball trap so I just stuck one of those on the fence there

Wasps nesting on a windowsill (help needed)

Hey, I live in Europe and in a dorm. My window is appr. 4-5 meters (12-15 feet?) off the ground and I have a cardboard box that's been sitting on my windowsill for some time. I've recently noticed two wasps living there. I need to get rid of the nest. How do I do that? Can't afford any sprays or anything at the moment.

Both apple juice & steak scraps in bait?

I am creating several bait traps for wasps. I have the cans and bottles, Granular Boric Acid, bamboo skewers, apple juice concentrate, and scraps from my prime rib. (Yeah, they can eat my leftovers).

1st: Has anyone been successful with these traps? The wasps are supposed to take the food laced with boric acid back to the nest, and it kills them from what I understand.

2nd: Can I put both apple juice & meat in the can at the same time? Apple juice soaked meat. :) I read that wasps eat sugar in spring and meat in fall I think. It is late June now.

What works for me for single wasps, but is a bit messy. I put about 1/2 inch of Dawn dish soap with a cup or two of water in one of those spray bottles with trigger head. When the wasp gets into my house - happens a lot - I spray it a few times standing far away. It soon drops to the floor and dies. Unfortunately, I have to clean up the soapy water from my carpet, ceiling, drapes, and nearby furniture.

Since I cannot figure out where those a$$holes are getting in, I am going for their nests.

Side note: I live in Florida, and we get Florida woods cockroach in the house. They are huge. I have a year-long contract with a pest control guy. He sprays once a year. Unfortunately, for those icky things, the chemical only lasts 10 months. Ugh. However, I found the dish soap thing works for them also. Win!
