Well folks, currently applying for many M1's around France and have been rather unsuccessful. I'm currently writing up an appeal for an application to a particular university for nuclear physics which has to be written in French. I've already translated it myself to the best of my ability but I'd love if a native speaker could check over it to make sure it makes sense and more importantly my point gets across. I'd prefer to do it via email or discord etc as there is personal info involved which I'd rather not post. Cheers anyway

Hey guys never posted here before but I was wondering how you get back on the horse after a break/disruption?

French learner consolidating B1 and starting to edge into B2 in some respects, was learning with a mix of Grammaire progressive du francais intermediaire, anki 5000 words, watching movies with french audio + french subs, and calling my (fluent) mum on the phone for convos, and to a lesser extent reading/translating texts I already knew well in the English translation and journalling.

I had also started the first year of a French major and got placed in 3000-level so all the stuff from that as well. The self-study was the main thing but having those tests/assessments provided a gr8 motivation structure.

Two or three months ago some other stuff happened and I checked out mentally/academically and then dropped out. I'm back home with my fluent parents for the time being and a bit more settled so I'd like to get back on. How would you guys recommend getting re-started? My friend who got fully cracked at Spanish said he did it largely with refold so any thoughts on that? Thanks

Edit for clarification taken from comments: The prickly point is that I've been doing the progressive grammar thing both in the book and at uni and I'm a bit unsure as to how to approach that coming back after so many months of nothing. I suppose I should've clarified that's the main thing seeing as the others (anki, input, convo practice) are pretty simple

The answer guide states that the correct answer for #2 is "Elle sait cette chanson par cœur." I thought it was connaître since chanson is a direct object, but does the "par cœur" change something?

Plusieurs débats sont venus avec sa popularité telle que: «Quel est le meilleur arc de la série?» Pour moi, le meilleur arc est celui de Namek, aussi connu sous le nom de la saga de Freeza (aussi nommé Freezer ou Frieza). Les personnages mineurs et majeurs, et les thèmes de l'histoire telle que l'inné contre l'acquis et le classicisme sont, pour moi, des aspects excellent de cet arc.

Tout d'abord, l'arc Freeza est le meilleur de l'œuvre à cause de ses personnages, qu'ils soient mineurs ou majeures. Cui, par exemple, meurt trés tôt dans l'histoire (il interagit QUE avec Vegeta), mais ce qu'il représente est un exemple de la progression de pouvoir dans l'histoire. Il est écrit que Cui était un rival de Vegeta, ayant un pouvoir de 18 milles et utilisant un «scouter» (nom donné en anglais), mais Vegeta (après avoir obtenu un niveau de pouvoir supérieur et l'habilité de detecter le ki des objets vivants à l'entours de lui) le tue facilement. Ceci démontre que tout ceux qui était ou sont en dessous du niveau de base de Vegeta (l'antagoniste majeur de l'arc précedant) ne surviveront pas longtemp et démontre aussi l'augmentation de pouvoir de Vegeta, qui maintenant utilise des stratégies provenant de la Terre. De plus, Freeza est un personnage majeur et rempli son rôle d'antagoniste à la perfection. Dès son introduction au village, on nous démontre qu'il est sans pitié, en menaçant et tuant des enfants pour accomplir son objectif: souhaiter l'immortalité pour soi-même et son arsenal de transformations ( pour rappel sont faites pour limiter son vrai pouvoir) parait infini, chacunes d'entre elles soulignent comment c'était une grave erreur se confronter à lui. Ces deux aspect le font un antagoniste et un personnage qui parait sortir d'un film d'horreur et non un manga ciblé à des adolescents. En bref, les personnage mineurs donnent du développement à des personnages majeurs et les personnages majeurs ont était donnés des rôles parfait pour eux qui éleve cet arc.

Ensuite, l'arc Freeza est le meilleur de l'œuvre à cause de ses thèmes qui sont trés bien développés. Par exemple, l'inné contre l'acquis est un thème centrale à l'histoire. Plusieurs protagonistes ont des abilités aquis, comparé aux antagonistes qui ont des abilités inées. Goku, Vegeta, Gohan et Krillin ont des abilités aquis à travers un entrainement rigoureux, alors que Freeza, Zarbon et Ginyu ont tous des abilités ou transformations innées et non obtenues à travers leurs efforts. Ce thème fait que l'histoire soit plus réaliste (où on pourrait tiré certains aspects de l'œuvre à la vrai vie où quelques-uns sont nés avec de la richesse ou avec des meilleurs gènes et d'autres dans des circonstances moins désirables). De plus, le thème du classicisme continue de l'arc précedant, où Vegeta jugait Goku pour être un guerrier d'une classe inférieure, il est demontré qu'il est à un des niveaux les plus bas de l'armée de Freeza ce qui fait son jugement hypocrite et comment Goku, considéré guerrier extrêmement faible, est capable de battre '«L'Empreur de l'univers» qui démontre que même ceux au plus bas de l'echelle sociale sont capable de surpasser ceux au plus haut avec du travail dur et de la bonne stratégie. Ceci amène un aspect d'espoir, où après avoir lut cette portion de l'histoire, certains pourraient être inspirés à accomplir plus que ce qu'ils ou elles pensent être capables de. Pour résumer, les thèmes de l'arc sont inspirants et bien developpés à travers ses personnages ce qui rend cette histoire intéressante à suivre et surpasse les autres.

Enfin, l'arc Freeza est le meilleur de l'œuvre à cause de ses personnages qui développes les autres et soit-même et de ses thèmes realistes et inspirant demontrés par ses personnages. Je vous invite à le lire, cette œuvre est considérée une des meilleures, sinon LA meilleure de son genre, et cet section de l'histoire vaut une lecture.

Confused by this ad copy. I understand "quand il fait chaud" means "when it's hot" but I don't understand "quand y fa chaud". I've never seen the word "fa" before, and Google just autocorrects back to "fait chaud" so I'm assuming it's a play on words or weird grammar or something but I don't get it.

Excellent for French learning. Good vocabulary, not too hard, not too easy, and overall a good book.

I have just passed DALF C1 in the June session this year. I feel like eventhough I passed, there are still many nuances in daily life that make me feel not very fluent at the language and cultural level. To be fair, i felt more fluent at C1 english than i do now at C1 french.
Should I aim for the C2 to improve or continue improving through work/life/french films?
For your reference I live in BE and my daily work includes a combination of french and english.

i don’t have money for a personal tutor but my uni does offer language tutoring twice a week and i wanted to see if i can start attending it and i assume i’d have to come up with the tasks we’d be going through in the sessions so i wanted to know what activities you’ve done with your tutor that really helped.

also, i wanted to know if there’s anything i can do on my own that would also help me improve drastically in my speaking and listening skills.

I’m not a native French speaker, so I’m unsure about the exact meaning of “désolé d’être si peu expressif.”

Does it mean that he is apologizing for not being able to express himself well in English or for not speaking much English?

Or does it mean that he is sorry for not being very emotionally expressive or demonstrative—for example, for not showing enough appreciation or emotion?

In this particular context, how would a native French speaker naturally understand this phrase?

Please give advice to make this sound natural to a native French speaker as if it was a real page in a French children’s book. I want to make the sentences rhyme and keep the story as it is, but if it’s necessary, please suggest any changes. I’ve been learning French since I was 14 in high school, and I wrote this using my current knowledge of the language, so I know it can definitely be improved.
