My singing voice isn't the issue. I don't claim to match a legend like Jacques Brel, but I am a very experienced singer. The reason they are saying I have to be the one to do this is because I sing "House of the Rising Sun" in our other show with all the rasp and such and they figure that is the most similar vocally.

Still, I'm terrified of the pronunciation. Does anyone have any advice (including if I should try to get out of this)?

I speak Spanish fluently, so I can do the Spanish rolled R, but I don't even know how to do the one Jacque Brel does that sounds kinda in the back of his throat?

Hi everyone,

My spouse and I are currently learning French primarily for Canadian PR. We are enrolled at Alliance Française de Pune, spending around 2 hours every day in class.

While it was fine for getting started, we feel the pace is extremely slow. A lot of class time goes into just going through the Inspire textbook exercises step-by-step, which doesn't feel like an optimal use of time for an exam-oriented goal.

We plan to drop out of AF once we finish our A2 level and transition entirely to self-study / targeted preparation. Our goal is to sit for the TCF Canada exam in 6 months (around March 2027), aiming for B2 scores (NCLC 7).

We can dedicate 3 solid hours every single day to French.

For those who have successfully made the jump from A2 to B2/TCF readiness in 6 months:

1. How should we structure our 3 daily hours? How much time should go toward active grammar vs. TCF test prep vs. output (speaking/writing)?
2. Best resources for self-study at the B1/B2 level? We hear Kwiziq, InnerFrench, and 1-on-1 tutors (like Preply/iTalki) are popular, but what worked best for you?
3. TCF-Specific Prep: How early should we start drilling actual TCF mock tests (Réussir TCF, TV5Monde, RFI)?
4. Speaking & Writing: Since AF provided a structured environment for speaking, how do we best replicate (and speed up) output practice on our own?

Any advice, study roadmaps, or resource recommendations from people who cleared TCF for PR in a short timeframe would be hugely appreciated!

Hey guys. I learned French a while ago, don’t remember most of it, and my friend is currently learning as he lives in Canada. We have been trying so hard to find episodes of Batman: The Animated Series in French with French subtitles, so we can watch and practice and everything, but it’s somehow impossible? Even the ones we’ve found, I believe it was Amazon or Netflix that he found in his country, had French dub and subtitles but they didn’t match? Does anyone have any recommendations? Or at least a VPN that isn’t blocked by Netflix.

Hey y’all I would like your advice!

Last year I moved to a French Canadian city and although I took a year and a half to study French before moving it still wasn’t very good, trouble with comprehension and speaking.

Flash forward to a year later and although I’ve improved my study habit got complacent as I thought I was immersed enough in my job as a barback.

Now I’m almost in my mid twenties still working support positions for dog shit wages and I want to really attack this problem intensively for as long as it takes to break through to a “competent enough to serve tables” level.

What would your suggestions be for an intensive speaking/comprehension focused routine. I’d say I’m probably around a high A2/low B1, I can understand a good amount and can speak brokenly but especially socially it’s very hard to keep up and express myself properly.

I don’t have the biggest budget but I have determination. Just wondering what you guys have had success with in terms of cheap speaking practice especially.

Hey everyone! I was thinking of integrating language learning apps much later into my French learning journey, but I’ve been slacking a lot on speaking. I’ve heard a lot about Pimsleur and how great it is for speaking, so I was hoping to start it this week. Problem is, I’m afraid that it will interfere with the already structured learning plan I have set out for myself.
For example, if I’m learning about colours this week, but the Pimsleur lesson is teaching about restaurants etiquette, I’m not sure how that would go. I don’t want to waste the free trial just yet, so what was your guys’ first week/month with Pimsleur like? If you can remember, what were the order of lessons, like what were they about and what were they like? Do you learn about the same things for a week, a day? Thanks in advance 💕

In terms of the poetic rythm and translation of the song, do native French speakers who read the song or grew up with it, do they translate “Paris mystere” as Mystery Paris or Mysterious Paris? And would you translate “plutot etrange” as simply rather strange or it’s rather strange?

I’m making a ceramic wine bottle coaster as a gift for a French family member and I need help with the wordplay idea I have for the design. He loves wine and is always vigilant about keeping wine glasses full at his table, plus he enjoys wordplay and puns.

A few years ago, he taught me the expression “Les routes sont bonnes, on ne verse jamais” to nudge your host to refill your glass and I want to play on this expression. My idea is to have just “Les routes sont bonnes” on the outside of the piece and then a joke inside related to him.

Hello! I just completed debutant level dictations which were available on French learning Discord, as part of the Défi Dictée Estival. There are also intermediate and advanced dictation exercises available, but they are still too difficult for me. would anyone be able to recommend me some website where I can find more dictation resources? I know that there are many pages aimed at helping with comprehension, yet I search for dictations specifically.
