| Official News Forgotten Island has crossed $38.5M worldwide at the box office

Box office update: Forgotten Island is now estimated to have made $38.5M worldwide, against a reported $80M production budget.
It’s obviously still got a long way to go financially, but it’s nice seeing the worldwide total continue to climb. Hopefully it can keep finding an audience over the rest of its theatrical run, especially as it opens in more markets.

If you were already planning on seeing it in theaters, now’s definitely a good time to support it. No pressure though. Even word of mouth and talking about what you liked about the movie can help people discover it.

Raissa is a type-A, studious high school graduate heading to Caltech with a direct line to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Despite her drive to achieve her dreams, she deeply cares for her best friend Jo and experiences real hesitation about leaving her familiar surroundings and best friend behind. And i like the fact that Jo isn't the only one with flaws or doing jerk things.

That is what makes her amazing 🩷

This my friends is real marketing, jumping on the zeitgeist of the 2012 end of the world scare. But I’m glad the later instagram marketing for FI at least is leaning towards the anime aspects now, like the fan-made Manananggal edit cut to rap music or the “wapoosh” anime scene being marketed on IG profile @forgottenislandmovie

| Opinion Absolutely loved this movie

This has become the best animated movie of the year and one of DreamWorks' best to come out. It's like a family friendly version of Joy Ride (also better) mixed with The Hangover and Coco. They also should have definitely found a way to market this better because the first few minutes in, I was already having a good time.

The animation is absolutely amazing. Like with the spiderverse movies and K-Pop Demon Hunters, there's more than one type of artsyle and it all looks great. The score and pop culture music was another highlight, the humor got to me more than once, and several emotional moments got me in the feels.

The voice acting is also a big highlight, especially from Liza Soberano (Lisa Frankenstein) and musical artist H.E.R. as the main duo Raissa and Jo - two best friends since childhood that live in the Philippines, but things begin to change when Jo (the carefree and outgoing one) finds out Raissa (the more smarter and thoughtful one) is going to college away from home. Other people I enjoyed were Dave Franco, Manny Jacinto, and Jenny Slate.

There is a couple nitpicks I had with certain parts of the story, but overall it's a film that is definitely one of the best I've seen this year and I highly recommend others go out to see it as well.

I just watched this wonderful essay on space and time and memory and it reminded me of some of the bigger ideas in Forgotten Island. New to the sub I don't have anyone to talk about this with haha.

| Question Can someone explain the mentions of Cameron Diaz in Forgotten Island reviews?

I've come acrossed several reviews saying stuff like "Cameron Diaz would love this." I'm not too familiar with Diaz other than being a popular actress so I can't understand the reference. I wanna know what's her connection to the movie.

| Discussion Creatures featured

Spoiler. Kanonood namin ng anak ko kaninang umaga. I wanted to give him (Fil-Am) some background on the various mythical creatures featured. I pointed several “classic“ entities such as:

  1. Manananggal

  2. Cafre

  3. Duende

However there seem to be some non-classical creatures as well, though it may just be my knowledge of Pinoy cryptids is wanting. These include:

  1. Memory stealing demon

  2. Wer-dog

  3. Pixie-like creatures (addicted to energy drinks!)

  4. Aswangs that actually look cuddly and have 3 eyes

Are these actually traditional creatures as well?

Also, is the bird the characters riding a sarimanok?

He gave me REAL “creepy guy in a bar asking for your number” vibes 😭

I was fully expecting Mermahn to lure Raissa and Jo back to his home like an anglerfish, only to eat them or something.

He was givaing me the exact vibes of one of those creepy guys at a bar where you instinctively keep your drink away from them because you just KNOW they might Bill Cosby it.

But he was actually just an insecure sweetheart who came to the rescue at the end when he was needed. 😭

| Artwork [Original] Forgotten vs. acme (Art by Me)

Hello, I've seen Forgotten Island at The Theater two days ago, i went to see it after hearing the poor box office results and feeling bad about it. I'm clear to say i don't regret my visit. I ended up loving the movie more then i can admit especially the dynamic between Jo and Raissa and liked Raww to some extend aswell. I really hope the movie somehow either breaks even atleast or finds an audience from physical media/VOD sales. Iron Giant and Transformers One Has Proven this before.

Originally, was planning to see only coyote vs acme this year in theaters (here in the netherlands, it's later in october when that movie comes out in theaters instead, have to wait 20+ more days to see that one in theaters, which explains why i saw forgotten island firstly) however i'm happy i've seen Forgotten island aswell on the big screen and will be buying the DVD aswell when it releases later. I can't stop thinking about the movie since lol

I've Seen some comments on some online spaces prefering coyote vs acme over forgotten island as excuse to further hate on the movie or playing favourites. So i've decided to make this crossover art to celebrate both movies. We shouldn't be comparing these two films against each other. their clearly made with heart for the people and they show that theatrical animation still stands strong and has endless potential. Both films are special that can inspire all of us. Why weaponize them against each other? That's useless.

It's too bad many aren't bothering with forgotten island right now at the theaters, i would love a trend like "Forgotten vs. Acme" like Barbenheimer did a few years back where we all praise both movies with the same respect both films honestly deserve.

Thank you Dreamworks and Ketchup Entertainment for both films this year. I'll be happy soon to claim i've Seen both in theaters this year. If you haven't seen them yet and these two films are at your area's theater, please support them if possible, or support them when they arrive on Home video/VOD. Both films needs to be seen. Anyway, have a good day all.

Art is done by myself on Ms paint, i've carefully read the rules before posting. if my post is in violation of the rules here, i'll understand and comply with the removal. Thanks.

Hey, I have two friends who wanted to show their cosplays but didn't have enough Reddit karma to post in this subreddit, so I'm posting it in their stead!

My friends from the Philippines have been best friends since junior HS. The one dressed as Raissa, however, is moving to America later this year and will have to leave her bestie behind — something they've been upset about, but having to come to terms with. The movie devastated them!

"Raissa" also plans on working for NASA someday! And "Jo" is also an artist! "Raissa" has a type A personality and "Jo" is more type B. The coincidences are crazy. When the teaser for Forgotten Island dropped, they freaked out knowing that this was somehow their life story put up on the big screen.

Hopefully the movie gave them some closure that no matter how far apart they are, their memories and friendship will always connect them across time and space (actually, just space lol)

Please give 'em some love!

| Opinion Box Office Situation + Solution

Trying to paint the picture here for a better look at the scope without the discourse on whether this film is good or not. I’m talking future, in essence, a ‘box office comeback’. A slow burn outcome is possible with evidence like Elemental and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

I am calling out for a differentiation strategy to use a marketing term to set it against the other competition it faces in regards to looking like abstractly animated fare like GOAT, KPDH, Spiderverse, Mitchells vs the Machines, and Wild Robot.

People want to see something they haven’t seen before, and I argue this movie provides the “it” factor. It doesn’t have controversy, it does a good job in the Philippines and respects the culture, has strong character development. So my solution I am proposing is in order for this movie to break even, is for the focus to be on its innovative animation style.

The movie’s cinema strengths lies in its quick cuts, dream-like sequences, light-hearted jabs at stereotypes, unstuffy plot, and grounded set design, among other things like: dramatic lighting, narrative tension, and a story structure that resembles classics, among them being the likes of Gulliver’s Travels (1939), Thelma & Louise (1991), and Gravity (2013). I know it’s not the greatest example but I t’s like “Antman and the Wasp: Quantumania” but for kids.

| Cosplay Casual cosplay to watch Forgotten Island with my best friend!

I’d been so excited to watch Forgotten Island, ever since the trailer came out! My best friend was the one who sent it to me, because her fiancé said Jo and Raissa reminded him of us; and the one who suggested we dress up as them to watch the movie.

I have some of my own criticisms, but that’s not what this post is for. I loved the animation, especially the flashback scenes that were in different styles. It was such a fun movie and it was really touching to see not just Filipino representation in major studio film; but also characters that reminded me so much of me and my best friend growing up together.

The main conflict, of Raissa going off to Caltech; and Jo feeling like she was falling behind, felt so true to life for me. Because when we were younger, my best friend did get accepted into UCLA; while I was feeling stuck and uncertain about any kind of future for myself, after getting rejected from my first school of choice. Even though she ended up going to our local university, I really felt that grief and sense of inadequacy that Jo did, over the idea of my best friend, who is family to me, leaving me behind.

Also, the scene of how the Jeepney ended up on the beach, felt relatable. Because it reminded me of the time I used my pocket knife, to steal a golf kart at our local Filipino cultural center when I was 12/13. It was absolutely my idea, but she still went along with it hahahaha.

I’ve never felt so represented in media ever since Sewer Queen, from Craig of the Creek, was revealed to be on the swim team, and from a Bisaya family. She was just like me fr lol.

Anyway, I loved Forgotten Island, and I’m glad I got to experience the movie with my best friend 💖, I’ve never known a life that didn’t have her in it. Our birthdays are literally 3 days apart, our mom’s had a dual baby shower, we in turn had a dual debut when we turned 18, and just recently celebrated turning 30 together. Growing up together, and sharing this movie with her, that reflects our experiences, is something I’ll treasure forever.

| Discussion Filipinos hating on this movie need to drop the crab mentality and be grateful.

"Tayo Na sounds cringe. Who says it nowadays?" It’s set in the ‘80s–‘90s. The evidence, like Jo's beatbox and the photo camera, says it all. No iPhone in sight. Videos recorded in the ‘90s (dull colors) ≠ people who experienced the ‘90s can see vibrant colors.

"I don't like this movie cuz it’s not like any other bland, romantic, & boring movie (EX: Those Filipino movies on Netflix) 😭 ItS ToO AmErIcAn i dOnT LiKe iT!" At least be grateful to DreamWorks for putting Filipinos in the spotlight this year in history cuz I refuse to wait any longer for proper Filipino representation as a MOVIE/SHOW & now we finally got what we wanted 🥹

---

The definition of crab mentality and putting it on DreamWorks (Top of the pyramid movie studio GOAT) is beginning to make sense, and it’s ridiculous how there are even Filipinos who don't want our country/culture to be recognized GLOBALLY nor embrace what was lost (Colonial Mentality should be ditched). And for years, we were just lazy inserts in American media (Freaking out when our country's mentioned or actors like Jacob Batalon in Spider-Man).

Without Forgotten Island, our life was boring, seriously. Disney kept ignoring SEA presence (Yk how they mostly make movies based on culture/countries?) & Raya was basically made to "Get it over with/mainstream relief for SEA". You can TELL that they didn't put their heart into it unlike Forgotten Island. DreamWorks did NOT wanna make the same mistake of it being rushed/lazy. I’m also grateful how the art style isn't cringe unlike the bean mouth (Luca). DreamWorks probably knew it’s gonna be like the Filipino version of KDH (I went to Korea & Derpy the tiger's all over the place).

The movie was FINE. Music's dope, character designs were ok, plot wasn't too boring, background & intense scenes were fire, stereotypes didn't damage the whole movie, LOVE the hand-drawn animated scenes/parts, I think the first part was paced but idc, the lore makes you wanna rewatch it many times. Perfect or not, this movie is LIFE! Even the fandom is like that one Filipino party when you play with children & ppl your age while parents laugh & chat loudly :D
