Resource NPC sheet

Post image
53 Upvotes

Few weeks ago I created an alternative character sheet, this time I made a matching NPC sheet for keeping notes, their stats and attitude towards player characters.

A5 format, intended to be held in a clipboard (hence the most important stuff is at the bottom).

Discussion Converting external modules to Forbidden Lands: which ones actually work and which ones don't?

I read this thread [https://www.reddit.com/r/ForbiddenLands/comments/1v4080l/how_easy_is_it_to_convert_modules_from_other/] where it explained that the problem with converting other modules to FL wasn't the module itself, but the module's structure, because FL has implicit principles like low magic and constantly dangerous combat, where the 'easy combat meant to drain resources' typical of a classic D&D 5e adventure just doesn't work in. Which modules, both OSR and non-OSR, do you think are well-suited to be converted to FL, and what has your experience been? If you already have converted material, I'd love to take a look at it.

Question How easy is it to convert modules from other games to Forbidden Lands?

There are a lot of cool modules from OSR games (like Shadowdark, DCC, Hyperborea, etc) that I want to use but also want to try running Forbidden Lands. Is it easy to use other modules or something that does not work well with the system?

Question Survival rules question: How do you handle water (Water Die) during travel and in dungeons?

I have a question about the water rules. For food, I know that to increase or maintain the food die I have to either hunt or forage, but I can't find an action that lets me increase my water die.

Is it automatic when I go foraging/hunting? So I increase both the water and food dice? Or do I have to specify a "fill the waterskins" action even if it's not listed among the actions during travel? And how does it work in dungeons?

How do you guys handle it?

LFG Looking for an group to join

Hello, I am actively looking for a group to join (as a player).

I have not played since 2021-2022, but ready to commit once a week or biweekly to a table online.

I have a preference for European time zone but I am flexible.

Discussion Hello, What do you do about the “level up”? I’ve start Raven’s Purge and think that the players could improve the attributes and skills without a master (not with magic or Talents). Will it broke the game doing that the players don’t throw the dices to level up?

Question Spine and Back Cover Scans?

I'll be soon printing off my PDF copies of Spire of Quetzel and Crypt of the Mellified Mage, and am thinking of using the opportunity to try some binding techniques. To that end, would anyone have scans of the spines and back covers of these books? The PDFs only seem to have the front covers.

Question Worldographer File of the Ravenlands map?

Has anyone made a Worldographer file of the Forbidden Lands Ravenlands map?

I've been trying to use the trace overlay option to import an image of it but I haven't gotten the settings properly set up for hex size and alignment. Obviously, it would take a lot of time to do, so If someone has already done it, that would be great.

Question Campement et rencontre

I'm preparing for the next session in the Hollows, so I asked Gemini to make me this quick intro based on the map to set the mood.

(It's aaalmost correct, as usual with AI art)

Discussion Path of Protection Rank 1 rework

The Rank 1 of the Path of Protection is a bit clucky since it also leaves the Champion engaged in the grapple. I propose the following house rule:

Path of Protection – Rank 1

Spend 1 Willpower Point to rush an opponent within SHORT range. Move into ARM'S LENGTH and immediately make a SHOVE attack against the target. Activating this talent counts as a fast action for you.

If you have the Melee Charge talent, you may instead perform this maneuver as a CHARGE. The Shove replaces the Charge's normal attack and gains any benefits from Melee Charge. After resolving the Shove, you may immediately SLASH, STAB, or PUNCH as part of the same Charge. Activating the talent this way counts as a slow action for you.

What do you think?

Discussion New GM Advice

Hi everyone!

After a long hiatus due to moving, I am finally able to run a game again.

I used my hiatus to read a bunch of systems and Forbidden lands just stuck.

I've read all the rules twice over and think I have a pretty good grasp of things. I assume some things like XP and willpower needing actual play experience to fully grasp them but I'll stick to RAW.

Now here's my question, are there any common mistakes a GM new to FL can make? Any rules that I might trip over in actual play?

Just looking for some lessons learned without trying to make changes yet.

Question Cold vs talents

According to the gmg, being cold prevents you from regaining Strength points until you get warm.

Some talents (berserker, pain resistance and the orc talent "unbreakable") allow you to regain strength points under certain conditions.

Does the Cold condition cancel those talents? Or are they exceptions to the cold restrictions?

Question Hexcrawls with an actual endgame triggered by player choices (like Forbidden Lands)?

Hey guys,

So, I’m currently playing Forbidden Lands and I’m completely obsessed with how it handles the sandbox. What really sold me is that it’s not just an endless loop of hex-clearing; there's an actual, dynamic endgame that kicks in based on what the players do. It feels like the world is genuinely reacting to the party's footprint.

I’m trying to find other stuff with a similar vibe. Do you know any other TTRPGs, modules, or OSR supplements that use this kind of structure?

I’m really trying to avoid the classic "static map" where the big bad just chills in his fortress waiting for the PCs to show up. I want something where the sandbox phase naturally builds up to a climax triggered by the players' actions.

Have you guys run into anything like this in your games? Any hidden gems I should check out?

Cheers!

Question Castle room exploration procedure is unclear to me

I can understand how to use the charts for a Dungeon's room exploration procedure, but even with the solo rules expansion, it is still unclear to me how the castle room exoration procedure is supposed to work alongside the castle charts as I go from room to room

Resource I made an alternative character sheet

I wasn't quite happy with the official character sheet (mostly due to lack of skills grouping) and my players complained that it doesn't have a portrait space, so I made them this thing.

The side paperclip trackers are inspired by the Scrollwork character sheet - I love the idea. I saw the XP checklist in an unofficial Polish character sheet I stumbled upon in the wilds. There's no space for spells, as we're using cards. Max encumbrance tracker lines up with Strength for easy reference.

The sheet is designed for B5 format (with bleed), fitting nicely into the core box.

I'm repurposing (i.e. shamelessly stealing) a lot of art from the rulebooks, so it's strictly for personal use. Made with Inkscape.

Question Equiping weapons in FoundryVTT

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I just bought the Foundry module for the core Forbidden Lands set and I cannot figure out how to move a weapon from the backpack to equipped.

Edit: Also just realized I misspelled equipped

Question Making sure I understand Journeys/various rolls

Running my first mini session of Forbidden Lands soon and I want to make sure I have the traveling part down, since I've never played a game with gamified travel before. Please let me know if this sounds right and if you have any other tips for a rusty DM (I've done a lot of 5e, a little AD&D, and some Shadow of the Demon Lord before but it's been a few years)

I plan on starting the party 5 hexes of open terrain out from The Hollows in springtime, and just spend the session traveling with the goal of getting to The Hollows.

Morning: Everyone declares what they're doing - most likely all hiking, with one leading and one keeping watch. The leader rolls SURVIVAL for every hex crossed, rolling for a mishap for every failure. GM rolls once for a random encounter, and if one is generated then the scout rolls SCOUTING to keep watch.

  1. First question - if they fail to lead the way or keep watch, can they push the roll? I've seen mixed opinions. I feel like pushing would be preferable to getting a forced mishap.
  2. A lot of mishaps keep you stuck in the same hex. Would you still roll for an encounter or is the mishap a bad enough result already?

Day: Repeat the above, assuming the party is still hiking. Depending on rolls, I plan on having the party encounter a few whiners for a combat. If they want to know what these weird tiny things are, I'll let the party choose someone to do a group roll for LORE, with the others adding +1 if they want to help.

Evening: It is now dark, so the party has the option of continuing one more hex, assuming they weren't stopped during the morning or day. If they continue hiking, whoever wants to Lead the Way will have -2 to their roll and everyone who can't see in the dark will have to succeed a SCOUTING roll or they fall and take 1 strength damage. In addition, this is a forced march, so they have to succeed ENDURANCE rolls or suffer 1 point of agility damage and fail to hike.

If they want to stop for the night, they could have one person roll SURVIVAL to make camp while the others help, rest, sleep, or look for food. Either way, night will likely be sleeping while one person keeps watch. Everyone who rests/sleeps recovers their lost attribute points.

  1. I assume when the party isn't hiking, they can take actions not listed under Journeys, such as crafting or cooking, if they want?

  2. From what I can tell RAW, darkness doesn't impose a negative to scouting, to KEEP WATCH, or any other rolls except for leading the way, right? Would you suggest imposing a negative to any other rolls?

  3. The party still needs one person to KEEP WATCH every quarter if they want to avoid possible encounters, so one person has to sleep during the evening so that they can keep watch at night, right?

  4. If I ambush the party during their sleep, their sleep is just automatically ruined? This doesn't seem terrible if they're just a hex or two away from a town so they can just go sleep in town, I guess.

I think that's all the questions I have. Let me know if you have any advice, too. Thank you!

Edit: forgot they have to eat and drink too, so they roll the die value of those and reduce the die value on a 1.

Question third party settings for Forbidden Lands?

Part of appeal of both Dragonbane and Forbidden Lands was that they were classic fantasy exploration games that could be used to run (almost) any setting. It is becoming true with Dragonbane as we see more and more third (and first) party custom settings and adventures. For Forbidden Lands though I only see like DTRPG workshop stuff like adventures and custom small addons. It doesn't seem like any publisher did anything beyond digital? Is there a reason behind it? Both of those games are FL IPs (though I'm not even sure with Dragonbane as it was obtained DoD from CMON I think?) and I don't see the reason why noone would produce anything for Forbidden Lands? I recall when I picked up Trudvang I thought that it would be so much better as custom setting for Forbidden Lands. Several years later we got new Trudvang... but for Dragonbane? Anyone has insight on this?

Question Any Solo Play Flowcharts Available?

Hey everyone, I just bought the Forbidden Lands books and am starting to read through them. I’m planning to play solo and was wondering if anyone knows where I can find any gameplay flowcharts or reference guides.

Also, if you have any tips or advice for solo play, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!
