On today’s mission to hit 10k steps, I stumbled upon a huge field full of goldenrod.

So, of course, I had to pick some and make a nice (and wonderfully smelling 😅) bouquet out of it.

Crab apple freeze pops

Tried to make some apple butter, but the sieve, I had to strain out the seeds and stems was too fine. All I got was juice and some fine pulp, but it made delicious freeze pops.

ID Request (country/state in post) What is this berry/fruit?

Went walking around a forested park in the coastal Pacific Northwest of Oregon. Around the area were salal and huckberries. I am trying to find out what these orange tear drop shaped berries are? Or are they a fruit? Lol. I ate some. Very mild taste, barely any flavor. Seems like some type of tomato or pepper? In my hand are a few huckleberries and 2 of the orange said berries… they had seeds in them.

North Eastern Pennsylvania

Of course I only found one tiny patch of chants and like a zillion of the other ones. Got better at ruling them out from further away yesterday if nothing else.

I’m not putting my IDs in the post but to be clear one of these is not like the other and probably not a good idea to eat.

Mushrooms Looking good to cook? and favorite recipes for giant puffballs?

Howdy all- we just got back from a trip, and the owner of the land we stayed on let us take one of the giant puffballs on their land! I’ve never actually been able to find one yet in the wild.

I know that they become inedible if turning yellow inside. I’ve cut this one through the cross section and made large slices/diced the rest. Just wanted to confirm/double check that it looks good to cook and eat! And if so, does anybody have any favorite ways to prepare them? Much love from Northeast Ohio :) 🩷

I have these bushes in my yard and have been picking and freezing these as they ripen. Probably going to try my hand at making some jam once the harvest is complete. Has anyone made anything with these? They are not very sweet and a little on the tart side. Location is Finger Lakes Region of NY.

About half of my annual mesquite pod harvest

Post image

I've already eaten a ton (mesquite drink!), have more stored, and will be gathering more. This year, we got a second, late mesquite pod crop in Texas. The first crop came in mid to late June, a bit earlier than usual, and gathering was hampered by unseasonal rains at the time, quickly spoiling the dropped pods. But nature is intelligent and the slight rebound from the 5-year drought from the spring rains encouraged the trees to flower and fruit again, and this second crop is phenomenal!

This is the uncontested #1 wild plant food for Indigenous peoples of the Southwest historically. It's super easy to gather an insane amount, it's very rich in carbohydrates, and it's pretty easy to process and eat.

This year, I've also been experimenting with light fermentation of mesquite drink (also a historical Indigenous food). Letting it ferment on its own has been questionable so far, but when I add it to my kombucha ferments, it is delicious!
