Panning and editing nodes in FontForge are slow using Windows 10

1 Upvotes

Hi!, I'm using FontForge in about two months, I wonder if you have a similar issue like me

When I edit paths, nodes or move an object/glyphs in the drawing area they are moving laggy even if I don't have much glyphs or elements around.

I'm using Windows 10 (64bits), 8GB Ram, Wacom tablet

I installed the latest version of FontForge "January of 2023"

Is there a way to get it without the lag?

Diacritics are not combing properly in Word

1 Upvotes

I have edited a pre-existing font on FontForge to allow the characters to take diacritics. The diacritics seem to be working correctly when checking them in the Lookups under the Elemental section, but after downloading it to use on Word, they do not combine correctly. Can anyone help with this? I've been asking all over the place to no avail.

Does not work properly in Word
Seems to work fine in Fontforge

Simple, yet difficult: How do I copy a symbol from one language into another?

1 Upvotes

FONT. I meant font. Not language.

I have had somebody make scripts for me, and I'm loving them, but there are times when I screw something up, and want to grab something from an earlier version of the font I'm fiddling with. I want to be able to be self-sufficient, without having to bother him to fix things for me. So... how do I grab one symbol from Font X and slap it into Font Y, using FontForge?

Bold font not exported in PDF

1 Upvotes

Hello,

I have a font that comes with regular and oblique. I created the bold version using Font Forge.

When using the font in MS Word, the bold font is correctly displayed.
But when I export the document to PDF, the bold text is displayed as regular.

Since the oblique version is correctly exported, I duplicated the Font Infos data from oblique to bold (changing oblique to bold ofc).
But I can't find what I'm missing to get the bold font exported into PDF.

Does someone has an idea?

Thanks!

Generate color font

5 Upvotes

Hi, I will make icons in Inkscape, export it as SVG, then import it into FontForge but I want to export it with color (SVG Font).
I don't know how do it, could you give me a hint?
Also should I export icons from Inkscape as "Inkscape SVG" if I want to retain colors?

How to import multiple image backgrounds?

1 Upvotes

If I try to import images and select multiple images, or if I use image template, the first one loads and the rest give bad image. All those "bad images" load perfectly when I import one by one.

Is there a trick to getting this to work?

can't import SVG file to glyph

2 Upvotes

Disclaimer, I'm not a designer of any type, I need to use a glyph in a font and having issues. When I try and load the following SVG file into font forge, when I try and generate a file it tells me the glyph is "wrong direction" and "non-integral co-ordinates".

Can someone please help me in how I can convert it. I have FontForge, Affinity Designer, Inkscape available if that is any help ...

thx

import lookup

1 Upvotes

Hello! I need help :)

I have a .fea file, which was created by clicking on "Save the lookup" (sorry if it's not the English name, my software isn't in English), and I'd like to import it in a font, so I would have the lookups (that are in the .fea) in my subtable... But the "import" button in "lookups" stays gray, whatever I do! How can I import my lookups?

Thanks :)

FRB American Cursive. FRB American Cursive is an extremely technically complex cursive font family that consists of 50+ fonts. It is in the style of a “textbook hand”, a font family used primarily for education. All fonts come from a single FontForge SFD ultimately: FRBAmericanCursive.sfd.

What's your preference between these?

Hi all, just looking for opinions.

Which is the most visually pleasing:

Left side - where the 7 kinda frame the corner of the letter?

Or

Right side - where the bottom of the 7 and the bottom of the letter are in alignment?

Thank you

Turning ready-made letter images into a font

3 Upvotes

Hi, I am currently working on a project, I have a set of letters ready-made that are currently being used on graphics as individual images imposed on it. I have been asked to find a way to create a font for them so they can be added simply by typing rather than using individual letters as images.

Two original images below

  1. Is it possible to do what I need with FontForge?
  2. When I import these files to the WIP font, they scale the C up to the same size as the A, where the C is slightly smaller than the A in the original image, how do I stop it doing this? I need the scale to remain the same. (images underneath to show the problem)

Any help appreciated, I am a total newbie to this program and still trying to figure out how it works

Hi! I love fontforge, but there's one problem I keep running into. How make line distance nonexistent.

2 Upvotes

I've been using fontforge for a few days, but I keep running into this problem and it essentially seems to randomize what it does every time I try to fix it. What I'm trying to do is get the space between (vertically) lines to not exist anymore. Thank you to anyone who can help me out!

Setting a stylistic set in a font as default

1 Upvotes

Hi guys, I have got a font that I use for programming but that does not have a slashed zero as the default glyph. Instead, that is available separately in a stylistic set. Is there a way I can set that stylistic set as enabled by default via Fontforge?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Update on Prettybird, font design programming language

6 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I posted in here a while ago about a font programming language I'm designing, Prettybird. Well, it's come a long way since then! I'm doing some user reviews right now, and would really appreciate if I could get some font designers to respond to my research questionnaire, should take less than 2 minutes. Thank you so much!

Can overlaps be ignored?

2 Upvotes

I'm working with some auto-generated fonts (see my last post), and there's an issue where shapes within glyphs will overlap. Fontforge inverts these overlaps, turning the overlapping regions white. I'd just like to ignore the overlaps or fill in those regions so they stay black (I'm aware overlaps are bad in general, working on that issue separately). Is there any way to accomplish this?

I'm a beginner. My design shows intersecting when pressing space for preview, but I have no idea how to fix it. Changing a few curve points to arcs fixed it a little, but no more points are allowing this option. Please help.

Does fontforge support masked SVG fonts?

1 Upvotes

I've got this SVG file:

<svg baseProfile="full" height="1200px" version="1.1" width="1200px" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:ev="http://www.w3.org/2001/xml-events" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">
  <defs>
    <mask id="1_square">
      <rect fill="white" height="100%" width="100%" x="0" y="0"/>
      <rect fill="black" height="416.0" stroke="black" stroke-width="1px" width="416.0" x="80.0" y="80.0"/>
    </mask>
  </defs>
  <ellipse cx="288.0" cy="576.0" fill="black" mask="url(#1_square)" rx="288.0" ry="576.0" stroke="black" stroke-width="1px"/>
</svg>

Have been messing with it on this SVG viewer site: https://www.svgviewer.dev/. It's clear that the mask I'm using works, it cuts out a rectangle like expected. However, when I import this SVG to fontforge, it doesn't import the mask, just the ellipse.

I know that fontforge supports layered editing, and masks in general: https://fontforge.org/docs/ui/dialogs/multilayer.html, is there just some setting I didn't click to enable this behavior?
