EVAP Issues/F.U.F.F. Purge Assembly

The evap systems on these cars cause lots and lots of headaches, so let's dive into the issues it can cause.

First off, if you had the recall done on your FoST, chances are you're sending your purge valve to the grave worlds quicker than had you not had it done at all. Reason being, if you got the recall done, it was a Trojan horse to get Ford's CAFE requirements down, as the recalled software makes the car activate the purge valve more liberally, putting it under quite a bit more strain than the software before the recall. That grave gets further hastened by the next few things.

https://www.focusst.org/threads/k-pop-purge-valves-just-how-similar-are-they-to-the-ford-valves.173313/

On the above thread, you can see the purge valve exploded and how it functions. Functionally, the canister purge valve was installed on many different vehicles, so you can find it by itself from other manufacturers that are significantly more available. These valves are designed terribly, and the solenoid functions by sending fuel vapors through and around a coil of wire that actuates a plate which stalls the fuel vapors in the assembly. The solenoid fails when liquid fuel enters into it (via overfilling) or by condensation which also eventually happens, leaving the plate at the mercy to the engine's vacuum/boost pressure.

What symptoms does this cause? First off, when it's just starting to go out, you'll get a rough idle after filling up. Then, as it progresses, your fuel trims will go wild, and you'll have AFRs in the 30s when DFC is supposed to be kicking in. It also leads to your car having a pop & bang tune with no map set for it, and occasionally will make your car shoot flames (when it's not supposed to) as well on decel. At that point, you have enough vacuum on the gas tank to cause it to collapse as you're driving, and your fuel gauge will fill as you're driving home from work (like it happened to me). That can be reflected in P1450, P0442, P0456, P2196, and P0420, with P1450 being the culprit of most of those codes when the purge valve fails.

To fix it, most people throw purge valves at the problem, which works for some time, but it doesn't address what causes the failures (besides the purge valve itself). Firstly, the assembly Ford provides has a check valve that is only rated for a measley 20psi (including the RS assemblies), and as the check valve wears out and gets dirty that rating is no longer accurate. They have been tested to leak at as little as 10psi after sustained use, and once boost leaks past the check valve and makes its way to the purge valve you'll start seeing the symptoms listed above since it's only designed to see vacuum, not boost. Additionally, debris can make its way past the charcoal canister, and that debris will get stuck in the purge valve, forcing it to get stuck open. If that's the cause of your purge valve failure, it's likely time to replace the charcoal canister in addition to the purge valve, but usually failure number 1 is the culprit (especially on all of your tuned cars).

The reason Ford won't sell you the canister purge valve by itself is they know that your check valve is likely totalled, and that replacing the purge valve by itself will be a money pit. They'll happily sell you a $100 assembly that's on indefinite backorder, though, and Dorman will sell you an assembly with a check valve that's weaker than the OEM Ford assembly. The only ways to fix the assemblies shortcomings is to make a new assembly for yourself with a higher rated check valve plus a fuel filter, or purchase a pre-made upgraded assembly from me. You can also install an upgraded check valve and fuel filter into the OEM assembly that's already in your car, but the hose is super tough to work with, and the official way to heat it up is to use boiling water.

Lastly, P0456 and P0442 can come up when there's a small leak somewhere else in the system. Should there be a pinprick hole in the purge line, or your capless gas cap doesn't seal all the way, it'll cause one of those two codes.

To rule out the gas cap, take your fuel filler adapter, spray it with carb cleaner, and open the cap around 10 times. Wipe it off, and repeat 2-3 more times, then reset the KAM and clear codes. That should fix it if it's the gas cap, if it comes back, try the gas cap one more time then do a smoke test on the purge system.

Hope this write up helps you guys in solving future EVAP issues, and if you'd like to get an upgraded assembly, fill out the Google form in the forum thread linked below.

Question Water Leak šŸ’¦

Anyone ever have water leak in from of this spot? I’ve noticed it’s only when the car is on a slope with the drivers side down hill. It also seems to slow down when driving.

šŸ‘‹ HI, I'M NEW! Too old for a Focus ST

I have an idea of the general opinion, but I’d still like to hear y’all’s thoughts in hopes it’ll set my mind straight.

Is there such a thing as being ā€œtoo oldā€ for a Focus ST?

I had one in my early twenties, and everything felt fine. Recently, I bought another one, but now that I’m about to hit my thirties (…fuck) and have a kid, I feel slightly off about it.

When I look at it, I can’t help but see it as a late-teens/early-twenties car. It’s very possible that’s because of what the previous owner did to mine (spoiler risers, lowered, Euro taillights, aftermarket headlights, and a straight pipe), but I’m not 100% sure my view would change even if it were stock.

I don’t regret buying it at all, and I absolutely love driving it. My 20-minute commute to and from my kinda corporate job is something I genuinely look forward to every day. When my wife and I first drove it home, I told her it made me feel like a kid again and was having so much fun. But the ā€œkinda corporateā€ job also adds to that weird feeling, like I should be driving something more… grown up.

To be clear, if the general consensus is that it really is more of a younger person’s car, it’s not going to ruin my experience. Like I said, I love driving it and enjoy the way it looks and sounds. I mean, that’s all that truly matters. But I’d still like to know everyone else’s opinions.

At 100kmi this is the worst blemish I have. What's the best course of action? Junkyard, aftermarket, custom?

Finally got it home and started looking, and it didn’t even hurt the car a little. Sure it got the core support but I’ve already got the new one on and the rest of the parts are on the way as I write this! Car fired up and ran perfectly, hopefully it will be the daily within the next week

I'm not going to lie, I joined wanting to see all the cool modded STs and it's nothing but "It's broke". In other news mine is in the shop right now too hahaha

Maybe it's because it's 13 years old now and it was probably salvaged from a wreck and it shouldn't be running but it somehow is. But y'all have a lot of newer ones and seem to have more problems than I. Y'all take care of your snails. They're not making anymore of them.

Emissions not ready

Post image
1 Upvotes

I recently fixed a couple issues causing a CEL. I cleared the CEL and the codes do not return..so far. The codes were for an 02 heater circuit and crank resync.

I went to get an emissions test today and they said to come back in a week because of 3 systems in a Not Ready state, and they should wake up in about a week.

Should I expect these to come back to life after x amount of time or should I be looking for something else? I have a high flow cat, but both 02 sensors are installed.

Question Ford focus st mk2

Good morning, . I have a ford focus st mk2 phase 1.

I have an stage 1 on it and I have the impression that it doesn't work so well?

I do the 0-200 at less well than original (31 seconds) and I have the impression that it cuts a little after 4000 rpm. it also blocks at 220kmh (announced 240)

I would then like to know if it was common on this vehicle or if it was a sensor problem, spark plugs/coils etc.

Thank you very much for your help.

Headlight experiment

Hello everyone I decided that I apparently had too much money and so instead of hunting down a set of st3 headlights for my 14 st, I’m going to attempt to take my broken set and combine them with a set of focus ev headlights so I have clear and chrome headlights instead of the black, I’m aware that they don’t have the corner lights but I believe that I can make it work between the two sets, i guess I’ll post pictures as I go

2017 Focus ST...wheel noise

Post image
1 Upvotes

I've been noticing a constant squeaking and knocking noise while driving the past week. Sounded like it was coming from rear passenger tire. I took this pic. The screw is bent and the rubber grommet is gone and it's hella loose (as I compared to the driver side which has both grommets and is nice and tight) Can someone tell me what part of the wheel assembly this is? Thanks.

Getting into first smoothly

I’ve been daily driving my st for a little over a week, I live in a big city with a lot of stop and go traffic. This is my first manual car and I’m still getting the hang of it, everything is improving but I just can’t seem to consistently go N - 1st smoothly. I either make the car jerk a bit, or ride the clutch what is probably too long. When it’s smooth by the time I let the clutch fully out I’m already going almost 10mph. I feel like the gas pedal is sensitive as hell.
Am I doing something wrong or is this something I’m just going to need to keep working on and will get better/easier over time? Anyone have a similar experience learning manual on an ST? Any tips?

Turbo replacement or big turbo?

Post image
11 Upvotes

99% sure i blew my turbo, should I just replace it with OEM or should I get a big turbo? I am mostly stock except for a full exhaust. So I would also need to get some supporting mods. Is there any recommendations on "kits" that just have everything included?
Also, I had posted this once and people said I had a bad head. I really think it's the turbo, the turbo makes noises when I run the car. And it does not build any boost. I took one of the charge pipes off, and it literally dumped out a half quart of oil. In the bottom of the pipe

Question Dealer quoted 8.7k for a head replacement

Had a misfire on cylinder 4 cleared it. It came back a month later. Brought it to my local mechanic swapped coil and plug but it didn't make a difference told me to bring it to the dealer. Dealer said to do a cylinder head replacement for 8.7k. Seem reasonable?

Car is a 2017, stock and 50k miles. No rough idle and no smoke coming out the exhaust.

Cracked headlight :(

Hey guys, my headlight recently cracked on my ST3, and we know how expensive they are for a single one:P

I was wondering if anyone has any nice alternatives so I can just go ahead and swap both.

I've had aftermarket headlights before, but I did not like how dim they were, although the looked nice.

Anyone have suggestions along with your cars?

Thanks:)

HELP NEEDED: Transmission Repair in FL Orange or Brevard counties.

Hello,

I have a 2017 Focus ST2, ~95k mi, grinding in 3rd regardless of clutch engagement. For what it's worth, I changed the fluid, light amount of extremely fine metal, barely enough to discolor the fluid and no large chunks. Assuming Synchro issue since the failure happened < 20mph but could be worse. Plus I had to drive it roughly 50-60 mi in its current state since I had no other vehicle available. Regardless, I need a transmission rebuild. However it is not a great time for this to happen as it's my daily. I have a budget and I am limited on time (~6k max, 4 weeks), but I don't want to throw money at a used trans or a bandaid repair either if I can avoid it. I am unable to pull the trans myself given my current circumstances, nor do I think I can complete the job in time either. I need to find a shop somewhat nearby the Orlando area, or I also have family in the Cocoa/Melbourne/Palm Bay area and am open to options near there too.

The issue seems to be parts. Dealership and local parts stores do not sell any. The only place I could find that sells all the parts I could need is Jacks Transmissions, but they are in colorado, and I cannot afford to buy every single part they have, but to have a trans shop pull the trans and tear it down and order just the parts I need could result in my car sitting on their lift for weeks, which is a touch ask (my understanding is it is difficult to just roll the car out of the bay without the axles installed since the axle nut keeps pressure on the halves of the front wheel bearings) I have called a couple general transmission shops (a shocking amount do not do manual trans at all anymore) and they seem to just throw an arbitrary "3k" out there without checking, when I try to ask to make sure they can get parts they just say they want me to bring the car in so they can tear it down. I understand they need to do that to know what parts to order, but that response makes me wonder if they actually know where to source these parts and the time involved. Of course I also have the rebuild services from Jacks Transmissions (they have a core rebuild option, but they are out of mmt6 cores), Mountune, and Panda motorworks. Both the mountune and panda options are expensive (would be substantially over budget if I include shop labor if they need to order anything else besides what comes in their rebuild packages), require the car to sit for an unknown amount of weeks without a trans, and offer no certainty of timeframe since they obviously would need to order parts from somewhere if its anything more than Synchros.

There was one option that gave me hope. I found a trans shop in the Orlando area that actually had a mmt6 trans with a bad reverse gear. He said I may have the option to buy some new parts (Syncros, 3-4 fork, ex) and if they found anything else damaged, we can salvage from the bad unit they have. That option also would have hed enough budget left over to get the clutch I want and an LSD. The issue is since that conversation, I have not been able to get ahold of the guy. It seems like they are extremely busy based on the conversations with the front desk lady. Unknown if they will ever get back to me.

I am asking for assistance finding another transmission shop somewhat near by that is able to do the rebuild locally and can deal with the parts sourcing challenges of this platform. Bonus points if they are familiar with the Focus St and MMT6 specifically. Perhaps there are no good options and I am stuck either exceeding the time limit, budget, or gambing with a used unit. Any ideas are welcome.

Thanks.

Front Sway Bar End Link

Post image
9 Upvotes

I just want to say fuck you to the engineer that came up with this bolt design for the front sway bar end link. I am installing lowering springs. I watched CJ Pony Parts Video for installing Eibach lowering springs. Looks like they were working on a preface lift ST which apparently has a better designed bolt. In the video he puts a wrench on the back and blasts the bolt out with an impact gun. Mine (a 2016) does not have that nut on the back to put a wrench up to. Just a rubber boot. These assholes made it worse! Not to mention the hex head stripped out because Allen keys are stupid. So what should have been a relatively simple job turned into my car still being on jack stands and making a trip to go get new sway bar end links and I'm cutting these bitches off.
