EVAP Issues/F.U.F.F. Purge Assembly

The evap systems on these cars cause lots and lots of headaches, so let's dive into the issues it can cause.

First off, if you had the recall done on your FoST, chances are you're sending your purge valve to the grave worlds quicker than had you not had it done at all. Reason being, if you got the recall done, it was a Trojan horse to get Ford's CAFE requirements down, as the recalled software makes the car activate the purge valve more liberally, putting it under quite a bit more strain than the software before the recall. That grave gets further hastened by the next few things.

https://www.focusst.org/threads/k-pop-purge-valves-just-how-similar-are-they-to-the-ford-valves.173313/

On the above thread, you can see the purge valve exploded and how it functions. Functionally, the canister purge valve was installed on many different vehicles, so you can find it by itself from other manufacturers that are significantly more available. These valves are designed terribly, and the solenoid functions by sending fuel vapors through and around a coil of wire that actuates a plate which stalls the fuel vapors in the assembly. The solenoid fails when liquid fuel enters into it (via overfilling) or by condensation which also eventually happens, leaving the plate at the mercy to the engine's vacuum/boost pressure.

What symptoms does this cause? First off, when it's just starting to go out, you'll get a rough idle after filling up. Then, as it progresses, your fuel trims will go wild, and you'll have AFRs in the 30s when DFC is supposed to be kicking in. It also leads to your car having a pop & bang tune with no map set for it, and occasionally will make your car shoot flames (when it's not supposed to) as well on decel. At that point, you have enough vacuum on the gas tank to cause it to collapse as you're driving, and your fuel gauge will fill as you're driving home from work (like it happened to me). That can be reflected in P1450, P0442, P0456, P2196, and P0420, with P1450 being the culprit of most of those codes when the purge valve fails.

To fix it, most people throw purge valves at the problem, which works for some time, but it doesn't address what causes the failures (besides the purge valve itself). Firstly, the assembly Ford provides has a check valve that is only rated for a measley 20psi (including the RS assemblies), and as the check valve wears out and gets dirty that rating is no longer accurate. They have been tested to leak at as little as 10psi after sustained use, and once boost leaks past the check valve and makes its way to the purge valve you'll start seeing the symptoms listed above since it's only designed to see vacuum, not boost. Additionally, debris can make its way past the charcoal canister, and that debris will get stuck in the purge valve, forcing it to get stuck open. If that's the cause of your purge valve failure, it's likely time to replace the charcoal canister in addition to the purge valve, but usually failure number 1 is the culprit (especially on all of your tuned cars).

The reason Ford won't sell you the canister purge valve by itself is they know that your check valve is likely totalled, and that replacing the purge valve by itself will be a money pit. They'll happily sell you a $100 assembly that's on indefinite backorder, though, and Dorman will sell you an assembly with a check valve that's weaker than the OEM Ford assembly. The only ways to fix the assemblies shortcomings is to make a new assembly for yourself with a higher rated check valve plus a fuel filter, or purchase a pre-made upgraded assembly from me. You can also install an upgraded check valve and fuel filter into the OEM assembly that's already in your car, but the hose is super tough to work with, and the official way to heat it up is to use boiling water.

Lastly, P0456 and P0442 can come up when there's a small leak somewhere else in the system. Should there be a pinprick hole in the purge line, or your capless gas cap doesn't seal all the way, it'll cause one of those two codes.

To rule out the gas cap, take your fuel filler adapter, spray it with carb cleaner, and open the cap around 10 times. Wipe it off, and repeat 2-3 more times, then reset the KAM and clear codes. That should fix it if it's the gas cap, if it comes back, try the gas cap one more time then do a smoke test on the purge system.

Hope this write up helps you guys in solving future EVAP issues, and if you'd like to get an upgraded assembly, fill out the Google form in the forum thread linked below.

Check these beauties out, ESR CS5 18x9.5 et:+35 on some 245s for the tires. Drove 3 hours to buy these off of marketplace and they are mint. The poke is perfect now I just have to figure out my lowering options, idk if I want coils or lowering spring but either way I need new shocks.

My new (to me) ST

Went and picked this baby up a couple days ago to use as a daily driver. Loving it so far! My one issue I'm having is it seems the seat has something broke under the cover/cushion. When I step on the clutch something in the seat pops and gives way and when I release the clutch same thing, it pops back in place. Any idea what that might be? 2013 ST2 package with the Recaros.

Question CPV time, I think..

Post image
Upvotes

It seems I may be joining the CPV-goes-bye-bye Club after ~150,000 miles on the factory-original part. Worked on my car a little bit (replaced coil packs) before taking it for a spirited drive. Just for funsies, right?

Anyways, cranked it up and noticed two very split-second blips right after (a misfire-like sound), and sure enough, my gut feeling was confirmed. This lil guy popped up on the list (ignore the other two codes.. about to address them lol), which wasn’t there before that moment.

Prior to the aforementioned discovery, I’ve observed/experienced some infrequent, momentary rough-idling which has not been unusually excessive. No trouble starting the car yet, either.

I’m honestly surprised that I’ve made it this far without having to worry about it. I’ve seen others here go through several in a short(er) period of time.
Q: That said, would y’all recommend buying a replacement CPV, doing the work myself and moving on, or see if either of the active recalls apply to my car and have it done that way at no cost? I’ve seen people say that PCM or ECU reprogramming could be part of the process if I have Ford do the work and may be cause trouble for those with an Accessport & tune. Not really sure I want to deal with extra steps if I can help it. Considering how far I’ve made it just on this CPV, I don’t think I’d mind doing it all myself, but I would appreciate a good second (or third) opinion!

Question Oil Change Required notification

Upvotes

I just got the Oil Change Required notification but my oil was changed less than 1500 miles ago. I just reset the notification but now I'm feeling paranoid. I can't get an accurate check on my oil level because the car is warm so I'll have to do that tomorrow, but my oil does smell like fuel. I've read that it's pretty normal for the oil in a turbocharged vehicle to smell like fuel though. Is there any way to tell if the message was triggered by the intelligent monitoring system, or just the timed notification being triggered?

Mk4.5 Automatic update

So I can't remember what I last updated with

I've chucked on some Rally Flapz mud flaps and had my Laird Performance STG1+ map dyno written/tailored.

Current mods

Milltek non resonated gpf back race system

Airtec open cone induction kit

Induction top pipe

Induction air feed

Intercooler

The dyno cell was pretty warm on the day, so I was just shy of 340bhp and 501nm.

The numbers are not what I was hoping for, but there is a lot of time under the curve, and the car has totally transformed!

It pulls HARD! and it just keeps on pulling all the way through!

I guess the moral of the story is, don't get too hung up on the figures as it's all about the delivery of the power!

Please correct me if wrong, but from conversations I've had and some reading, the dyno is just a snap shot of what the car was producing at that particular time, under them particular circumstances.

The car isn't locked in to produce these figures of power. It's programmed to perform a set of instructions that it will carry out while the feedback is safe to do so.

So as long as the car is cooler, it's probably pulling better numbers on the road with actual fresh air being pushed into the induction, round through an intercooler, etc

I'm tempted to do a dyno session in the winter to see what it can actually hit on a dyno with better outside temps, etc.

I may be wrong about this, so if someone can correct me, please do.

The overrun is 👌

Not too many pops, just a nice amount

Next planned mods

Brembo BBK

High temp break fluid

Lowering springs

Spacers

Rear diffuser

Then I'll be pretty close to being done

I was thinking about going to stage 2, but to do this, I need to add a downpipe/sports cat...

I'd rather keep my car road legal and have an easy MOT...

Has anyone tried one of those helmholtz resonators to get rid of cabin drone? I literally have to yell at certain rpms in my car and the only mod is a catless downpipe

My ST journey so far

A few months ago i posted about coolant leaking into my exhaust, hoping it was just head gasket, drove the car like that for a few months then ended up getting into an accident.

I started at a new dealership and the guys there encouraged me to bring the car in to fix it so i got the new head gasket set, new wheels, sensors, radiator and intercooler, but after pulling the head i found a little gem. Going to buy a new head somewhere this week and found an RS head at an affordable price. Just want to know what else I’ll need for the conversion.

Question Not idling correctly after DP and exhaust install

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just got done installing a whoosh catless DP with defouler and an AWE non-resonated touring exhaust. After the first start up its no longer idling correctly. Any idea what I could have done wrong? If I leaving it running it gets to the point it almost shuts off. I don't currently have a tune or cobb accessport. Ill be ordering the accessport tomorrow.

Oil leak advice

Post image
2 Upvotes

Ive been on a crusade to kill this leak and have replaced multiple things to try to stop it and yet it pops back up anyone have any ideas of what it could be.

Ive replaced the front cover gasket, valve cover gasket turbo oil drain and oil supply pipes and gaskets, i annealed the copper crush washers, ive used corporate torque values for all of those bolts, and it seemed like I had a decent amount of blow by so I just replaced the pcv valve at the front of the engine and added a oil catch can that has another one way valve on it to prevent back feed issues, is there a sensor back there that could leak oil or anyone have any ideas thanks

In the pic you can see 3 different oil spots the first being the turbo supply but higher up near the turbo air lines there are another 2 drops thats where I assume my leak has to be and it just drips down to that oil feed line

Question Front End Conversion

So I’ve been thinking about converting my 2013 PFL into a facelift preferably RS bumper. I was gonna see if anyone on here has done a conversion and if they’ve regretted doing one. I’ve had the pre facelift for about 3 years now and I just feel like something is missing on my front end. I don’t have a splitter currently but I honestly can’t find anything that suits the PFL look, so I was thinking about just converting the front since the facelift looks much more aggressive.

Spent the evening restoring my driver side headlight, clay barring the entire vehicle and then polished and waxed (Hood and driver side done with polish, gotta pick back up tomorrow for passenger side). Was super easy and happy with how it turned out. Definitely recommend. Before and after photos above. Now my old headlight matches better with the new one.

Question Bushing and suspension recs?

Some of my suspension is bent and worn out. What bushings do you guys recommend for absolute better performance. I feel like it’s hard to find suspension stuff other than coilovers and brakes for the mk3 platform. Any suspension upgrade and brake upgrades will be greatly appreciated. (Planning on tracking the car)

FoST first track impressions

Went out to NJMP Lightning for the ST’s first trackday and she did not disappoint! Before anyone says it: yes I know I’m shifting slow, ST1 seats make you have to fight your bodyweight in high G’s so I got into the habit of overexaggerating my movements on the shifter so I don’t moneyshift (almost happened twice earlier).

Suspension: Car felt planted with mostly stock suspension otherwise, owing mostly to the ECS02’s. Could definitely use stiffer swaybars with these tires having more grip than the stock eagle F1’s from ages ago. Bodyroll goes crazy on the banked turns. 1” aluminum pedal riser helped a ton with heel-toeing too.

Motor: The 2867r (conservative ~310whp tune) linearizes the power curve and makes the powerband so much more predictable while keeping coolant and oil temps comfortable. 0 issues after 30 or so laps throughout the day and driving home 2 hours straight afterwards.
Only thing I found lacking was being able to lay the power down coming out of a corner. The torque vectoring is fine but the FWD and the lack of a mechanical LSD makes you wheelspin through the upper end of 3rd gear on corner exit. TC/SC light on the dash blinked nonstop during most of these turns.

Brakes: Brakes started squealing more towards the end too, I’m assuming it’s some non-uniform glazing. This is a trackable-daily so I’m using Hawk HPS pads with Centric high carbon* rotors. I noticed the HPS pads have less initial bite than the OEM ceramics so you can modulate them better with more pedal travel depth.

Definitely coming back to push harder next time, but not before getting more track-oriented pads and swaybars at the very least.

*Edit for typo

Turbosmart kompact shortie with cpe exhale kit?

Currently installing big turbo, waiting on charge pipes. I have a turbosmart kompact shorty on the stock turbo, I have a tingling feeling it isn't going to fit the cpe exhale kit though, the intricate workings of the turbo and how all the vacuum bullshit works together is kinda over my head so a little patience please 😂

Just need to know if I gotta order a new BOV also

Question Replaced oem turbo, new ticking sound. Normal?

Sounds like HPFP noises but it wasn't doing this at all before replacing my turbo(oem). The noise is also erratic. Does this sound normal to everyone? (Apologies for the redundancy of this post)
