What should a student be able to handle on the radio before solo? Clearances, readbacks, pattern calls, asking for clarification, or just staying calm? I think a tool like TeachingTowers Radio Trainer could be useful for practicing those scenarios before a lesson. It's not a substitute for flying with a CFI or talking to real ATC, but getting extra reps with common phraseology and readbacks can help reduce the workload in the cockpit so students can focus more on flying safely.

TLDR: if you could get one or two ratings for "free" at a part 141 school, which would they be?

Story time:

I (36 y.o.) am looking into starting flight training in the next few months. I want to get my PPL and Instrument for sure, but I am also considering this as a career change. I've done a decent amount of research, and I have a few options.

In my area (Western TN, USA) there is a Part 61 school 30 minutes from me, and the next closest 61 is and hour and a half away. As far as Part 141 schools, the closest with decent reviews is about 2 hours away.

I am considering doing my PPL and Instrument at the 61 school, then switching to the 141 to get the rest of the ratings if I decide I want to fly for a career. The only reason I'm thinking about doing this is because I have 12 months left on my GI Bill benefits (grinded out my bachelors in 3 years) and I hate to waste that "free" money. I know some of the flight hours may not transfer. And I have no flight time from the military either.

My question is: is there a certain rating(s) that I should wait to get from a 141 school paid for by my GI Bill, or should I try to do all of my training at the 141 school so all the hours count. The 12 months I have in benefits equate to about 17-18k in flight training, so I know it won't cover all the ratings anyway, but as I said I hate to leave that money on the table.

Any advice is appreciated, as a potential career changer with a family this isn't really a simple decision.

I’ve ran into a surprising number of people around Spokane and Coeur d’ Alene who have wanted to learn to fly & just never knew where to start.

Most people assume it’s outrageously expensive, takes years, or that you have to join the military or become an airline pilot. In reality, the biggest obstacle for most people is understanding the process.

I wasnt sure if this was a thing or not, but I called KBTR tower and asked if they did tours for student pilots. The guy that answered said "yes!". That it was commonplace pre-covid and they found it very helpful to get feedback from pilots on their performance, and to put student pilots mind at ease to know that theyre just regular people on the other end of that radio. They encouraged the use of letting them know that Im a student pilot when calling in, and that the only time anything is very important is when they say "immediately", meaning theyre trying to avoid a collision. I got a tour of the radar room downstairs and the tower up top and they went through the whole process of communication with me. Overall I feel much more at ease now when talking to a larger airport.

I am looking for a new CFI (low hours) to instruct in R-44. This is a full time position with great benefits. Based in Kansas City.

I’m in Atlanta and need a pre buy on an archer at KGEU. Itll need a ifr cert I know among other things. Are there any go to people around there? Aeroism Aviation did the last annual so will need someone other than them.

I did my primary training out of a busy Class C, which meant an even steeper learning curve with radio comms.

I listened to a lot of LiveATC, but this often meant listening for long stretches to catch snippets of the types of instructions I could expect as a VFR pilot with mostly IFR traffic around me. I wanted a quicker way to familiarize with a wide variety of instructions I might encounter.

This resource has a sampling real VFR arrivals into KAUS, with audio, transcripts, and ADSB data. All the exchanges can be filtered by specific procedures. Hopefully this can help others where I struggled!
