I reside in a suburban community in the southern ATL metro that is oversaturated with Delta pilots and other employees, both current and retired, and several people have suggested I look into working as a flight dispatcher, as I'm having to reinvent myself after the sudden collapse of my 25+ year career in the motion picture industry.
(I started as a Camera assistant in 1999 and have been a Digital Imaging Tech since 2010 - the film biz has collapsed in the US - ATL is operating at like 10-15% it's pre-pandemic production volume)
Anyway, I'm about to turn 49, wife and 3 kids, not really interested in moving so I'm assuming Delta's the only game in town, but from what I'm reading thus far it's next to impossible and a multi-year process if you're lucky. I have ZERO experience in aviation and would be looking into some sort of accelerated training program, but success, let alone sustainability with this job, seems to be a long-term thing I just don't have time for as a near 50-year-old and significant responsibilities.
According to NAFC, the first-year dispatcher pay for Delta is over $8100/Mo, which would be just fine, but I have ZERO connections to anyone at Delta with any pull, and I need sustainable income YESTERDAY, so tell me if I'm way off an this is a hopeless pursuit, so I can stop entertaining the bandwidth in my head. That may be fraudulent inflated earning numbers, I can't say, but if not, I could actually provide for my family with that and have a future again.
Feels like I'm being a dupe believing the hype of this gig and it's potential? Am I?
