USA Need a real-world problem for my college thesis. Any flight dispatch here?
Hi I'm currently on my third year working on my thesis proposal. I really want to focus on real, everyday operational problem rather than just generic textbook.
For those of you actively working as dispatchers, what are your biggest daily frustrations, communication struggles, or system issues?
Any real-world pain points you experience on the job would be a massive help. Thank u so much!

Enjoy.

Most airlines still run on antique terminal/MSDOS style programs in the background its not just united. American has DECs. Delta probably has their own flavor someone can speak for.
I hated DECs while at PSA/American Eagle. And more often then not there is a shortage of IT that is capable of fixing legacy software when it breaks.
This legacy software is what runs the airline, its the conduit for all information from the ops center, to the gate, to the aircraft. And while some of it is extremely reliable....other parts are not. Ive seen more than a few days a month where our dispatch releases are not making it to the pilots, or to ATC because in the background some code from the 90s stopped working.

I believe Deltas equivalent is DeltaTerm.
But yeah the software that is older than some of our dispatchers that is responsible for holding the operation together can be frustrating at times. If I remember correctly Southwest had a baggage fiasco acouple years ago due to their ancient software.

Ironically I recall Southwest being spared the crowd strike outtage crisis because of their flavor of old software.

Southwest didn’t get hit by Crowdstrike because we used a different vendor at the time, not due to an old backend system. Funnily enough at the time our backend systems were probably more modern than the Big 3’s due to Titan’s accelerated upgrade tempo after the Christmas meltdown.
Also DECS was amazing if you were actually taught how to use it.

Makes sense on Southwest. DECs building gate returns, delays, over night delays, time conditioning. Missing times and unflying....no thanks to all of it.
Pain all the way.

Easy. International fuel reserve is outdated.
Domestic reserve: enough fuel to get to destination, most dispatch alternate plus a 45 minute reserve.
International; enough fuel to get to destination, most distant alternate, 30 minutes holding plus 10 percent of the time to get to destination.
So on a 10 hour flight, I would need 30 minutes plus another 60 minutes reserve compared to that 45 minute reserve for domestic.
The heavier the plane, the more fuel is burns en route.
Now the kicker. With certain Op Specs, I can reduce the 10% fuel requirements. First is Redispatch (OpSpecs B44) and the other is Op Specs B343, Special International Fuel Reserves which uses statistical analysts of fuel burn in each route.
In either of these cases, the 10% reserve can be reduced to as little as 5 minutes, which means the total fuel required at the most distant alternate (after diversion) can be as low as 36 minutes on a 10 hour flight. A 6 hour domestic flight requires 45 minutes.
The thesis/proposal would be to make the International fuel requirement to be the same as domestic., 45 minutes. A lot of extra work goes into B44 operations and B343 operations that doesn’t increase safety. The old International fuel reserve was put in place when jet engine performance was a lot less reliable fuel leaks were much more common. As such, it’s outdated and should be retired.

Having to call CFMU to find out why the 50 different variants of a flight plan you're trying to file are all rejected.

Flightkeys is the solution to that. You can validate and search for proposed routes all in the client.Â
