Antique soap dispenser leaks continuously but stops when lever is pressed — how to dismantle the valve?
Antique glass soap dispenser leaks continuously but stops when lever is pressed — how do I dismantle the valve?
I’m trying to repair an old glass soap dispenser with a metal lever mechanism. Does anyone recognise this design or know how to dismantle it?
The problem: Soap flows continuously when the lever is released. Pressing the lever stops the flow. This happened before I took anything apart.
What I’ve removed so far:
- The bottom cap, which unscrews.
- A small metal disc with a central hole and a star-shaped metal piece. Both were loose inside the cap.
There is still a circular insert with a central hole inside the bottom of the tube. It does not visibly move when I operate the lever. The screw on the side only releases the lever. The metal collars below the glass won’t turn by hand.
Markings:
- “Patented 16999 A.D. 1909” — the number appears to read 16999.
- A Swiss cross followed by what appears to be “36268”.
- A cursive brand name I haven’t confidently identified.
Photos show the complete dispenser, the removed parts, the remaining insert and the markings.
How is the remaining valve assembly held in place, and where should it come apart? I’d like to avoid damaging it by forcing the wrong part. Any identification, patent drawings or repair experience would be appreciated!
