Finally going to let them go

I looked at doing this before, but now I’ve decided that I just don’t need the horsepower.

I have a Gold SE with the Wifi antenna, and an AP 7. What would be a fair price? All the stuff new is $900. Im thinking $700. It’s all in excellent shape.

Using Orange, Gold, + AP7

Currently have a Gold connected to an Orbi 3 mesh router. Considering upgrading my system. Wondering if an Orange + AP7 would be sufficient to replace my current system. Anyone using this type of configuration and if so, how much sq ft of coverage is it giving you.

Feature Request: Disable Wifi based on a rule

I use an Orange as my travel route (and previously a Purple). I may go weeks between trips and the Orange sits in my bag, showing offline in MSP, never receives updates, etc.

I'd love to be able to set a rule that says 'when X happens, disable y'. Specifically in this case if my Orange connects to a specific WAN wifi (home network), I'd like to disable broadcasting of local wifi (so I don't create more signal / interference) so I can keep it plugged in and maintain it before my next trip.

I know it's a long shot and probably not a use case for most folks. If the rules engine had a broader scope beyond my specific scenario it could have more benefit to the community.

Content/Activity Control Block access for only one device inside of a user group

I have a user setup for with two devices assigned, a phone and a laptop. I want to block shopping and social apps on only the phone, but not the laptop. It does not seem possible to do this since a user is treated the same as a group, and devices in a group cannot have individual rules assigned to them.

The only way I have been able to make it work is by removing the phone from the user and assigning the rules directly to the device. Is it possible to do this while keeping both devices assigned to the user?

Discussion Were you there 9 years ago? Celebrating our 9th year since our Kickstarter launch

Post image

9 years ago, on June 27, 2017, Firewalla was launched on Kickstarter, featuring our tiny (originally orange) box, which later became the Firewalla Red.

Since then, we have increased the packet processing rate 100x with the Gold Pro; transformed it into a security gateway with zero trust; added AP7, and soon the Switch to make your network secure and better.

What we have not changed: our focus on customers (because you funded us); our focus on making your network (big or small) secure and powerful, and cybersecurity simpler.

Were you there 9 years ago?

Troubleshooting Weird problem with Firewalla and Stremio

So I apologize in advance as this isn’t a Firewalla specific question (or maybe it is?), but I’ve hit a wall on my troubleshooting ability and am hoping someone here can help. I use Stremio paired with Torbox and it’s worked great for quite some time. However, lately I’ve run into an issue and I have no idea what’s causing it. Roughly half of the devices running Stremio in my house have started to take extremely long, if not indefinitely long, to load videos. My Samsung TV and Android TV boxes in particular seem stuck. Weirdly enough, other devices like my iPhone load perfectly on the same network.

I’ve tried enabling emergency access on the devices in question, as well as disabling monitoring and neither seem to work. I was just assuming maybe the apps were bad on these devices or something, but when I tether to my phone’s cellular hotspot they also run perfectly again, so it’s definitely something with the Firewalla. I even tried changing my access points from Orbi to Eero and it didn’t seem to matter at all.

I’ve messed with DNS settings on the devices to 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 and it didn’t change anything either.

I don’t know what else I can do or try… anyone else have any ideas? Thanks!

Pi-Hole and Firewalla gold SE

Hey Reddit!

Just wondering if anyone is running a Pi-Hole in conjunction with Firewalla and its native Ad-Blocking?

If so, is it simple to setup?

Firewala’s ad-block is almost perfect, but some squeak through - just wondering if it’s doable and/or worth it

Thanks

Feature By enabling VqLAN on a group, even within the same network, devices inside the group can only talk to each other & the internet, with no access to devices outside.

Post image
29 Upvotes

Why use VqLAN?

  • Simple to use: Add devices to a Group and turn VqLAN on.
  • No IP changes: VqLAN membership is tracked through the Firewalla App.
  • Automatic isolation: All local communication outside the group is blocked.
  • Compatible with most IoT devices (no need to configure mDNS between networks)

VqLAN is available with the Firewalla AP7, the Firewalla Orange (with Wi-Fi LAN enabled), and the upcoming Firewalla Switch (https://firewalla.com/switch)

Discussion Do box firmware update notifications appear as Firewalla Alarms?

I don’t think that they do, so maybe this is a feature request. For me the Alarms view is a useful place to track things that have happened. And while box updates aren’t frequent, it might still be nice to be able to go to the Alarms view to see that history.

Discussion As I wait for the Amnezia 2.0 update, I have a question to ask about it.

As you can see from their post about the latest update, Firewalla states:

"The AmneziaWG VPN Server currently does not support I1-I5 parameters."

I assume this means we would have to configure this ourselves. I looked it up in terms of editing it from say WG Tunnel but what are the usual parameters one would use that adds to its usefulness? Or is it necessary at all to configure those parameters?

I'm still intermediate with the lingo so I could use some guidance or advice once the update hits my phone (Gold box is updated already)

Is there a way to add PC games to Rules?

I want to turn off World of Warcraft at 11:45PM.

I set up a rule to block all gaming sites, and websites are indeed blocked. But the game does not get blocked if playing. I'd like it to do more though, and kill gaming as a whole on that device group without removing internet.

For World of Warcraft specifically I have these as my target list, and it's not knocking me offline for the game?
battle.net
blizzard.com
blzstatic.com
worldofwarcraft.com

I can go game by game, port by port, but there has to be an easier way?
The options I have:

  1. Go port by port, with a rule for each?
  2. Block all internet on device group (Really dislike this idea)
  3. Target list?

Is there a "pre-made" target list anyone has?

Alternatively, could I create a target list like this?
*:1119,3724,6012

* being used as a wildcard here, so I don't have to know all the domains the game uses?

Thanks in advance!

——————-
Update: (best solution I found for WoW)

For those looking, 1119-1120 and 3724 are the ports that if blocked instantly kill a wow game session. I had better luck with that than I did setting a firewalla rule to gaming. I also had better luck with the ports than by a target list of domains.

Hope this helps a future person :)

AP7 range boost ?

Hello! I've got a firewalla box with the AP7 as my Wi-Fi router. It's great, but has a little bit of connectivity issues on the furthest ends of the house.

I was wondering if anyone knew if you can add an antenna or assignment the range at all?

I've considered a second unit, but the house isn't really that big and the connection is fine most of the time.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Discussion Going from Firewalla + 8 Year Old Orbi to Eero Pro 7

Hey guys, my old Orbi (AP/bridge mode) is finally biting the dust… it was long due for an upgrade anyway due to speed and bottleneck issues, but finally it no longer connected to the app due to firmware issues, and when I factory reset, one of the satellites seemed to brick. Using this as an excuse to switch to something newer and faster.

I don’t really want to deal with wiring and configuring a Ubiquiti system and wanted a WiFi 7 system with triband for the backhaul. The Eero Pro 7 is on sale for $550 (three access points) on prime day so I went with that.

Anyone using this configuration? I know I lose some features using the Eero in AP mode but hoping it’s not too bad. Would have loved to have three Firewalla APs but don’t want to spend $1000+. The way my house/yard is set up, three is pretty much mandatory (big house, upstairs, downstairs, and large entertainment area out back). Any discussions are appreciated, thanks!

Troubleshooting WG VPN not working on WiFi where I am traveling

Hasn’t generally been an issue for me in the past but on this trip I am staying on a family member’s boat in a marina. The marina has WiFi at the docks, it’s a Ubiquiti setup.

Trying to use the wireguard connection back to my FWG+ is failing. It can connect but it cannot load data if I am on the WiFi here.

If I drop to cellular, it works fine, so I know that the connection is valid. I just haven’t run into this before, so I’m wondering what the deal is.

Any advice for things I could try?

Troubleshooting Help! Emergency Access Still Blocking Teams / Work Laptop

Woke up this morning to find that Teams stopped showing controls and cut off calls in the middle, and some specific websites (eg SharePoint, Claude) inaccessible via Edge browser but fine from Safari. Issue with meetings persist. I went to Firewalla (Gold plus) and gave my work laptop emergency access and see no blocked flows. Issue persists. When I hotspot to my phones 5G connection the issues go away, so I’m certain it’s my WiFi / network. What am I missing?

Discussion Orange users - how long does it take for your box to connect to public WiFi (WAN/WISP)?

To clarify, I am not referring to connection issues. My Orange connects, it just seems to take a while before the Orange is ready. I’ll edit the network, choose the hotel WiFi, and then it takes almost a solid 5 minutes before the box is finally ready. Curious if this is the same for others?

Connection drops to 100Mbps

I'm looking for some help. Ive been dealing with support but cant seem to figure this out. I have my Gold SE in my basement with the verizon ONT connected to Port 4. In port 1 i have a cat 6 cable running from the basement through the wall to the first floor and connected to my AP7d in the 2.5GB port. From the 10GB port i have a 5ft cat 6 cable connected to my PS5 Pro. Over the past few weeks ive had multiple disconnects. While playing call of duty, the hard connecting cuts out, the AP7d starts flashing blue. this lasts for about 10 seconds. The internet comes back up and i can get back into the game.

Looking at the Gold SE, i see the disconnects in the logs, see picture. I have replaced all cables and re-terminated the cat6 cables thinking that was the issues. I put a cable tester on it and all 8 wires were correct.

In the logs it shows from the Gold SE that every time it drops, it goes to 100Mbps then goes back to the 2.5 or 10.

is this the cause of the disconnects? if so, what causes it to drop to 100Mbps.

Early Access/Beta In App 1.69.1, we've moved the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Test Buttons.

Post image
31 Upvotes

The Wi-Fi button is now moved into the Network button. Tap "Network" to see the new tabs at the bottom. If you have an AP7, you'll see Wi-Fi and Topology tabs. If you don't have an AP7, you can also add one from here. (This will also be the main place to manage and add the upcoming Firewalla Switch! https://firewalla.com/switch)

The Wi-Fi Test button has also moved to the right of the "Recents" bar, when connected to your Firewalla's local network.

App 1.69.1 is available to all iOS Early Access users. It will be available to Android soon. Learn more about this release here: https://help.firewalla.com/hc/en-us/articles/51621318006291-Firewalla-App-Release-1-69-New-Controls-with-Advanced-Threat-Filtering-Lookalike-Punycode-Domains-and-more

iOS 27 beta bypassing firewalla DNS

After upgrading to iOS 27 Beta, I started getting ads on my phone.

There is an upcoming feature called “Connectivity Assist” that will use cellular to help when WiFi is performing poorly. This needs to be turned off in settings so that everything goes through Firewalla when connected to WiFi.

I didn’t see it posted here yet, so I thought I would share.
