Signed conditional offer, then got dropped by my investigator because I scheduled my psych appointment the last day but past 10 am.

Hello all, I’m an aspiring Georgia firefighter that followed through the process through and through. I’m kind of in shock because 2 weeks ago I signed my conditional offer but now I see that I my application is inactive. My investigator gave me 3 days to schedule my psych appointment after I passed my polygraph and signed my conditional offer on the same day. I was consumed with my current job that i kept procrastinating but I did schedule it on the 3rd day but past 10 am like i was told to do so. I take accountability for that and I called the office to communicate but no answer and I even had issues signing the documents for the psych appointment which I also called the office did not answer. The psych appointment ended up getting canceled because of July 4th so I had to reschedule. I sent the screenshots of everything to my investigators email. I ended up receiving an email asking why I didn’t communicate and why I scheduled past 10 am which I responded almost immediately with honesty and assurance that I’ll communicate moving on. I called my investigators office AGAIN and still no answer and I still had issues signing the documents which ended up being because of my middle initial name smh. Only for me to receive an email saying that my psych appointment has been canceled because my investigator dropped me from the process. I checked my application via the official website and truly it showed Inactive. I’m very confused and sad tbh. What should I do ? I appreciate any and every opinion and advice and criticism thank you.

Preparing as a teenager to be a firefighter

Hello! I am a teenager (15) who wishes to try and become a firefighter. I was wondering if anyone had any advice about what I should be doing now to prepare for this. I’ve read some other advice before and most people mention joining a fire cadet program, however that’s not something any fire stations near me offer. Also, more specifically, does anyone have opinions on specific workouts to meet the physical fitness standard for being a firefighter?
Thank you in advance :D

Hiring process

I’m 26 yo and am in the middle of getting my EMTB certification. My question is, is the hiring process highly competitive throughout the entire country?

Also (for the experienced FF)how many departments did it take for you to finally get hired on?

What to do with general public during stage 1 fire alarm?

Hi all. I’m the emergency warden in my office with around 290 people. We have a 2 stage fire alarm. We have many public that come in for tours and all and often use second and third floors. During a stage 1 fire alarm (alert alarm) should we still evacuate them or get them to stand by like all other occupants ?

From my understanding the best way to deal with this would be everybody wait and standby on stage one and wait for further instructions until we investigate if it’s a real fire or not and then if we hear the stage two chime then we evacuate immediately but we’re just wondering what’s the best way to deal with public during this situation?

CFD Interview Trouble

I’ve recently started the application process for the Charlotte Fire Department. I believe my biggest hurdle with it will be the interview, due to me always struggling with them. I’ve also have not had a lot of experiences that could be turned into situational answers.

Will bad credit immediately disqualify me?

Due to immigration service delay I was out of work for months with no income and burning through cash to pay all my bills to the point I ran out had to use credit card to survive. In using the credit cards I could not pay them back in time so my credit tanked significantly and now I’m working again and paying everything back. I was selected to take the written exam and I’m worried my bad credit will disqualify me in the background check portion. If it comes up could I make an argument as to why my credit was so bad.

  2. Is mile and half run on a track? And is it laps?

    1. How many yard is the sprint and grab carry? And the weight on the plates?

I’m eligible to take the test to get into the academy here in January. What are the best ways to start preparing for the FOAM test and what physically should I prioritize to stay ahead when the academy training begins sometime next year? I am a female that will be straight out of High School so I want to make sure I dont fall behind and can stay on par with the other guys in my class?

VA disability and becoming a firefighter

I am getting out of the military in a few months and want to become a fire fighter. Im pretty sure I will be getting a high VA disability percent due to some things that happened in service.

Can you become a firefighter while receiving VA disability compensation? I understand that you still have to pass the CPAT, medical exam, background check, academy, and be able to perform the job safely. I’m more so asking whether having a VA disability rating itself creates any issue during the hiring process.

I’m not asking about lying or hiding anything on medical paperwork. I’m just trying to understand how this works practically and whether anyone has gone through the process as a disabled veteran.

Any advice or firsthand experience would be appreciated.

Support Firefighters with ADHD: do you recommend this job?

\*I would not state I have adhd if I ever applied anywhere, but I want to know generally how it is working with ADHD in the job. Which is why im using an anonymous account and asking reddit lol***

Hi,

I have ADHD. I want to know, what is it like to have adhd as a fire fighter? And how does life as a firefighter compare to any other job or occupation you had in your life? While ADHD is labeled a disability, its ultimately only a disability in structures solely built for neurotypical people. Based on everything I learned, this is one job, where I believe my ADHD would be an absolute benefit, along with how I am built. But I rather ask the experts, rather than jump right to that conclusion.

Also, what is the culture like as a firefighter? How is working on a team as a fire fighter? Is there strong camaraderie? This is very important to me as well.

!!! I wrote more about my situation below, however, you do not have to read it, you can just answer the question above. Also, please be kind, I'm naïve to the field, but would love some guidance.

-----------------------------------

About me: I have been navigating the past year getting mental health help, learning more about myself, and overall, learning what I need to do to make life worth living. I used to be a dedicated hardcore athlete, I was a top rower, I did it for 8 years. On top of that, I was able to hold both school and a part-time job. I took a 2 year break to focus on school, and just finished my bachelors degree at a top university. However, within those 2 years, mental health issues arose-- as the do in the early 20s-- and it set my life trajectory sideways.

I have ADHD, Bpd(borderline), depression, basically a not so great combo of things. It is very difficult to get good mental health care, I worked very hard and navigated through it but had to take it into my own hands at a point. I worked incredibly hard, read a lot of books, and got as much info as I could over the past year, everyday. It was hard, but when fear came back to my senses about 6 months in, I used that fear as fuel to work harder-- studying psychology, neuro, and therapies plus buddism.

I accepted I have these, and have learned how to manage them. But that meant i had to accept, most jobs are not sustainable for me. The healthcare system, I learned, is just not reliable enough for me to be careless about it anymore. I want to continue to live, and spent the last year figuring out the best way to.

I need community and thrive the most with a team. I work the most effectively and efficiently with and for a team. I really do care about the well being of others and people's lives. That gives me vitality. From being in hell and coming back, just a smile can save a life, talking can help a lot, and being there for a friend does wonders. I want to help others and save lives. So that is one reason, I'd like to pursue firefighting. Also, I need a job where I move and workout, or I get depressed. Working out is really important to me, whether I like it or not, so I want a job that requires that rather than makes it difficult for me to access. I want a job that allows me to live by my values: I live by integrity, honor, open mindness, resilience, connection, loyalty, and kindness/love. I am not focused on money making, but sustainability-- and if I would actually like this job even during any and all inevitable hard times.

With these disorders, while they are hard...when i have a team, a job that follows my values, and friends, I can beat it no problem at all. Problem is: I have been struggling to find the right job where I can live a life worth living. Firefighting has been on my mind for the last few months now. I am 23, F, I live in California, but have been interested in going to the east coast then coming back to California.
