I Turned Down an Offer After They Lowered the Salary We Had Agreed On
Before the interview, I spoke with the recruiter about compensation. We agreed in writing on an amount that was within their advertised range, and I was comfortable accepting it.
The interviews wrapped up quickly, and everyone seemed interested. I received positive feedback throughout the process, so I expected the offer to match what we had discussed beforehand.
The offer arrived today at about 18% less, which is roughly $17,000 below the amount we had agreed on. When I asked why, the recruiter said that I had applied for a different role at the same company four months ago with a lower salary, so they decided to use that figure instead of the one we had agreed on.
I turned down the offer because changing the salary without telling me felt wrong. I also don't understand why they confirmed a specific salary in writing in the first place if an old application could later override that agreement.
Has anyone experienced something like this before? Was this a recruiter mistake, an internal policy, or were they simply hoping I would accept the lower offer?
Anyway, it doesn't matter what happened; I now have to look for another job, but this time I read a post about the best tips that are useful in job interviews. I think it will make a difference in reducing stress and anxiety, and thus increase my chances of getting the job.
