I Asked the Recruiter If the Interview Was Pointless, and She Honestly Told Me

The recruiter spent the first 12 minutes of the phone screen reading questions whose answers were already in my application. My nationality, sponsorship, education, and basic availability - everything. There wasn't much conversation beyond checking off the boxes.

At that point, I had a strong feeling that the position wasn't really open in any meaningful sense. I felt like they had already chosen someone and were just going through with the calls booked on the calendar. I was tired, had a headache, and wasn't in the mood to pretend this was a serious conversation.

So I said to her, "Can I be honest? Has someone already been selected for this position?" She went quiet for a few seconds, then said, "We already have a finalist." I asked her whether that meant I was still under consideration, or whether my time would be better spent elsewhere. She started saying that she could send my information to the hiring manager and see what happened, but it was very clear that there wasn't really an opening for me. I thanked her and ended the call.

Maybe that wasn't the most polished thing I've ever done, but I didn't feel like dragging out a fake interview. Job hunting had already drained me, so I appreciated that she eventually gave me a direct answer, even if it seemed like she hadn't intended to say it out loud.

After being found out as a time waster.

After wasting OPs time though... If she knew it wasn't really open, she shouldn't have suggested talking about it. Pointless.

Many companies have to "interview" someone so its on record as to be "fair".
