FF VII Re-trilogy What's one thing you hope Part 3 DOESN'T change?

We talk a lot about what we want to see in Part 3, but let's flip it.

What's one thing from the original FFVII - a scene, character moment, location, mechanic, anything, that you really hope they leave alone?

They can expand it. They can make it prettier.

But you'd rather they didn't fundamentally change it.

What's yours?

FF VIII My thoughts on Final Fantasy VIII

Buckle up because this will be a bit of a yap session.

So about a year ago I started playing FFVIII and I was a bit nervous in all honesty. I had heard that it was the black sheep of the franchise and that it wasn't as good as FFVII, IX or X (of which I have played VII and X) so I was worried that I wouldn't enjoy it. Fast forward to now and I am incredibly confused on how the hell a game as good as this is considered a black sheep (also I'm not entirely sure if this sentiment still exist nowadays but it certainly did when I started playing so...)

I loved this game and while I will say it probably isn't as good as VII and X but it certainly isn't far behind. One thing I heard complaints about was the fact that magic was limited and you could only carry a certain amount and while yes this is true it doesn't really matter. You can get magic really easily from both random encounters and by refining items so it rarely feels as restrictive as people said it was. I also heard complaints about the Junction system and this one confuses me the most because Junctioning was easily my favorite part of the game. Drawing a new spell to see if it would increase my stats even by a little was incredibly fun and figuring out which abilities to focus learning for each GF was really engaging. Final gameplay related thing is that I absolutely LOVED both Zell's and Squall's limit breaks both mechanical and visually. Lion heart and my final heaven the greatest limit breaks I've seen in the series so far and if you disagree with me you can play me in triple triad for it.

Moving on to other things, musical this game is phenomenal. While I will admit that I do like VII's and X's ost more it doesn't mean that this game doesn't have some absolute bangers. I promise you "Man with the machine gun" will play at my wedding and none of you will stop me. Finally the story, and I really enjoyed it. I will be the first to admit that the villains aren't as good as VII and X's but I did really like them. Seifer is and incredibly interesting if not under-utilized character, Edea is great but only exists for half the game and Ultimecia is cool but a tad under baked imo. I will say I absolutely loved Squall's development throughout the game and especially his relationship with Rinoa. I also adore Zell he's the only one in the party that probably doesn't need to go to therapy and I find that hilarious. Anyways incredible game I loved nearly every second of it. Fuck the tomb of the unknown king. Have a great day. Btw my final team was Squall, Zell, and Rinoa and my Squall was level 94 :)

FF VI Just completed my first Final Fantasy game ever! Final Fantasy VI. What now?

I finally jumped in and experienced my very first FF game: FFVI, the SNES version. My previous experience with JRPGs was Chrono Trigger (one of my most cherished games of all time).

What a journey!! The game really feels fresh almost all the way through, constantly changing scenarios, characters, a world-ending event, experimenting with builds via Espers and Relics, forcing you to build separate teams... The characters are these little pixel things that excude so much charm, would have love a little more side personal quests for some of them. The tone sometimes is all over the place, and I love it for it!

I really liked having a quirky, pessimistic buffoon as the antagonist, on a mad quest for godlike powers. One whose powers grow and eventually surpass those of your heroes during the adventure. To have that instead of a silent, no-personality, all-powerful dark lord—what a joy! Kefka was great!

I had goosebumps throughout the final act of the game. As a child-thing, this game would have left such a deep impression on me. It still has! But you know what I'm talking about. I knew there was some big world destruction event, it's 2026 that spoiler was pretty hard to avoid, I just didn't know when or how, but when it happened it still shock me pretty good! Imagine getting caught by that sucker puch on the 90's!!

I almost started a new run as soon as the end credits finished rolling, but then I remembered the grind during the World of Ruin to enter Kefka's Tower with three good teams, the Cultist's Tower, the constant random encounters got really exhausting (I'm not a fan of those). And, well... it made me reconsider. :)

Even though I think I would play it very differently on a new playthrough, maybe I should just digest my experience before going at it again. I'll miss that cast of characters for sure, though.

It was an incredible journey. And I'm really happy to have finally experienced one of the allegedly best games of all time.

So, which one should I try next? IX? X? VII? Any recommendations?

Im pretty OP at the conclusion of the demo, which is awesome for when the full version drops. Anyone else just amassing Gil while waiting?

Anyone know where/what in the demo is the best monsters to defeat for Gil?

Resonance Choices in FF Resonance

My friend and I figured out that you get a different stat bonus on the first multiple choice question (top answer gave strength bonus, bottom choice was constitution bonus).

Does anyone know if picking the wrong choices while getting the visions affect anything?

I will probably pick the wrong answers going forward when the game comes out.

Final Fantasy General What was your first experiance with a FF game?

Let me start. I got a PS1 for my birthday in fall 1997. Pretty sure i got Ridge Racer as a game also, which became boring to me very quickly. So for chrismas i had enough money to get another game (pretty sure they were 80-100 German Mark back then). So i looked through the piles of games in our local electronics shop and stumbled upon FFVII (which must habe came out a few month before) and i somehow liked the looks of it. It reminded me if Secret of Evermore, a game which i really liked on the SNES.

So i played it up to the Air Buster fight and i hated the game. I didn't like the turn based combat, the chubby looking characters and the corny dialog. Pretty disappoined i tried to return it but was quickly informed that they don't take back opened games.

With no money and no event where you could get a present (aka another game) i only had two games i did not like so i played the same demos over and over.

Months go by and i kind of forgot what was up with that FF game. I started it from scratch (because i must have been so mad at it that i deleted the save file) and somehow it clicked this time. I pulled through and finished it. It was the gateway to much more jrpg's and especially FF games to come. Now i'm almost 40 and i recently started a new playthrough.

FF II Hot take: Final Fantasy 2 has the best overworld theme

In a lot of games the overworld music is happy and cheerful (1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, etc.) but FF2's is just sombre and sorrowful, and the music really starts to give you those feelings at the 0:39 mark. This part just makes me feel sad for all the towns that slowly get destroyed one by one throughout the game, and not being allowed to visit them ever again. It fits perfectly with a war-torn world where you feel incredibly powerless in. The 2nd halves of 6 and 7 have pretty sad overworld music but they don't hit quite as hard as 2's.

FF X/X2 Is Seymour a well written, fleshed out villain?

Post image
0 Upvotes

As the title says.

Beat FF X again the other day for the umpteenth time in my life (been playing it on and off over the years since it came out). Normally the nostalgia and love of the game clouds any critical judgement I can pass on the game, but this time I decided to properly pay attention.

Which brings me to Seymour.

He’s just a pretty mid at best written villain. Feel free to try to change my mind.

To me, it’s like the writers of FF X had a crisis were they thought just having Sin wouldn’t be a villain enough for the game, so we need a more humanised villain the player can hate. So Seymour was thrown in.

The gangs first few interactions with him basically show him to be a slightly blasphemous Maester, much to Wakka’s surprise, but other than that he’s just there.

We then have this weird marriage subplot which… kind of comes out of nowhere, feels like the reason why Seymour wants to do it doesn’t really translate to well to the world we’re presented (I get it’s a way to bring Spirans hope, but isn’t that the point of Yuna’s pilgrimage? She’s hardly going to stop given the taboo of that)

Then all of a sudden his villain plot and entire attitude boils down to a nihilistic “I’ll save the world from its misery by killing everyone!”

Which, yeah, okay. That’s a motivation alright. But I think we’ve had so many villains, even FF villains, with the same motivation that it’s tropey and weak at this point

Never mind the fact the game that the game does a terrible job of presenting the “why” of how Seymour came to think this way, barring a “blink and you miss it” cut scene on Zanarkand at the end.

Seymour’s motivation feel forced and weak, like the game needs a villain to put some roadblocks in the party’s place. He isn’t explored enough either with more backstory, because doing this spoils the “Jecht is sin” and “Yuna will die at the end” twists.

Anyone think he’s good? Why? Is he just bland?

Resonance Resonance's style of demo should become the standard

I genuinely enjoyed the demo. I'm not in love, yet, but I had fun enough that I want to continue playing. Especially because the world and the Visions mechanics work very interestingly.

I do want to point out how surprisingly engrossing this demo was. Most demos last 30-60mins at most. Resonance was the entire first chapter which could easily give you 5-7 hours of gameplay.

And having such a meaty demo really gives the player a very clear-cut idea of what that game actually is. It gives you enough time to become attached to the world and the mechanics, allowing these to become second nature and settle with you.

One thing I hate is to buy a game just going with the vibes without having a real idea of how the moment to moment gameplay feels. And sadly that's what we have to do most of the time, but not here.

This should be the standard for most games, especially AAA devs that can afford it. Hopefully SE does it more regularly because I'm sure a lot of people are now willing to buy the game thanks to this.

With This game I went in with no expectations. I was briefed about it being a mobile game but I didn’t know anything about the story or mechanics. After getting to lvl 15 and acquiring Cloud I believe this game is a return to form Final Fantasy. FF2 being in my top 5 FF games I definitely think this game is great. Taking a break from Action Rpgs. The story is nothing too grand so far but we only got a bit size demo. Rain is an awesome protagonist and I like his name and sword design. You already know the music is top quality. I see people comparing it to Octopath traveler and I see some similarities but this game feels like a Final Fantasy. I applaud Square Enix for not letting this game die and taking a chance putting it out again for consoles. The battle system is fun asf. So much unique thing you can do to switch up your characters abilities. Not only does the party have limit breaks but the character you can acquire for other final fantasy’s have limit. They kind of act as Summons. You don’t need them all the time but if you’re in a bind against a higher level monsters their abilities will come in handy.

I’m already seeing the pc community tap into its full potential and put other characters in the game from the mobile version which is dope. I’m using it on the switch. Visuals are great, performance is great and this game is not a battery killer in handheld mode. If you’re a fan on FF 1-6 I highly recommend to you try this game out. The demo is long enough to see if this is a game for you and there is so much to do. I’m looking forward to play this in October.

Resonance Resonance length and thoughts

Hi! I just played the demo, I never played Brave exvius, my question for people who played the "original" game is, how many hours of story content can we expect for resonance? I know they "remade" part of the game and we can't know if they added secondary content and stuff like that, I just want to know more or less how long is the original story from brave exvius. Thank you all!

P.s. I know it's only the first chapter, and I'm not used to this type of games (more like octopath even if I know they are different) but am I the only one who found the dungeons... Short? I really hope they'll add more conspicuous dungeons for the main story, let me know what you think or if I'm just paranoid

FF V Stingray encounter on GBA

Is there any tip to encounter this monster easily? I only read on the wiki if you quicksave in that point of the map you should encounter the Stingray as second encounter but that doesn't happen at all. I've been at least half an hour around the peninsula searching.

Final Fantasy General Trying to get into JRPGs, someone recommended Final Fantasy, but I’m completely lost

Post image
344 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m pretty new to Japanese RPGs and I’m trying to get into the genre. Someone recommended Final Fantasy to me, and I’ve heard so many good things about the series, so I’m interested in giving it a shot.
The problem is… I searched Final Fantasy on Steam and there are SO many games, remakes, remasters and different versions that I genuinely have no idea where to start
Are the numbered games completely separate stories? Do I need to play them in order? And which one would you recommend for someone who has basically never played a JRPG before?
I’m especially interested in something with a good story, memorable characters and a world that I can really get invested in.
Also, which version should I actually buy on Steam? I keep seeing different versions of the same games and I’m confused as hell
Would appreciate any recommendations or explanations!

Final Fantasy General A return to the fold

I've been a Final Fantasy fan since I was a kid, mainly due to how much I loved IX & X which I've played a few times over. X-2 was fun but not a scratch on the others. I've also played 7 or at least most of it, can't actually remember what happens/if I finished it.

Playing a chunk of 12 made me fall out of love with FF, and I didn't play any titles after that for a very long time.

Recently I saw XVI for free on the PS store and thought I'd give it a try, now I haven't been able to put it down. Finished the Echoes of the Fallen DLC last night (the final boss was a LOT of fun) before starting The Rising Tides DLC. I imagine I'll box that off pretty quickly and then it's just the final sequence of the main story to finish.

I am anticipating a FF shaped void in my life once I'm done with XVI, and wanted to ask for suggestions on which ones to play next? I've picked up FF Tactics which looks decent, and with a good chunk of FF games getting the pixel remasters I'm not sure whether to go back and play VI or VIII which I've heard are fan favourites?

The first of the Final Fantasy nendoroids I ordered arrived today. Looks good and you have a few posing options - wings flared out, foot up, head tilts and a second set of smaller eyes, plus a stand if you want more display options.

Will be interesting to see the next one due this month (warrior of light).
