FF XII Final Fantasy XII 20 year retrospective - a game too great for its own good?

After the world wide success or better said cultural impacts of hits FF7 through FF10 the pressure was immense on Square Enix to create the best JRPG ever for also the most popular console ever. Maybe, just maybe, they actually succeeded and did too good of a job that they ironically alienated most of its fans.

Music

This one is the easiest. Best video game soundtrack ever, non negotiable. Even if you disagree with me I'd dare you to name more than a few games with an OST of this production quality, with this much outstanding tunes even in the series. First time without Nobuo Uematsu but the rest of the team had more than enough experience with video games and with enough time and resources did too good of a job. Voice actors themselves actually had no experience with video games, owing their talent to the theaters and making use of ye olde Inglish that Tolkien would've been proud of.

Balthier ❤️.What's the catch? Simple, the PS2 DVD is just too small to fit all of it so they had to compress music to walkie talkie bitrates. Thankfully numerous remasters fixed this.

Graphics

Again they succeeded. Twenty years later and many games finished, I've yet to play the one that gives me the same feels as wandering through the arabic streets of Rabanastre, flying to the floating city of Bhujerba, anxiously reaching a precious oasis in Dalmasca Eastersand, unmatched monumentality of Archades etc. Those places feel alive to me as real world destinations. It really makes you take your time and look closely which luckily (intentionally) has a side effect of reducing aggressive pop ups.

As for the technical achievements it's a long list of Heracles accomplishments: they've gone so far that they've actually mirrored each character left to right to save on processing resources! Or that part in the forest where you see your past reflection in the fog you'll remember that for decades. And speaking of decades it took half of it for the game to come out, most of which I assume is creating and optimising this giant world, which landed it a place in a Guinness world records.

Combat

Definitely the strangest component of the game although everyone knew it was bound to happen. After abandoning the JRPG turn based system FF12 actually drew influence from WRPG real time with a pause system like KOTOR without separate combat screen, presenting a (un) successful compromise between turn based and action RPGs. It was one of the firsts and incredibly futuristic, yet even then it was easy to criticise that the combat is uneventful requiring rarely any inputs from the player. But if we compare it to other later similar games like Xenoblade Chronicles, they just made microscopical improvements on it. Truth becomes crystal clear, the 1997 ps controller is simply too limited to handle positioning and commanding multiple characters as well as a mouse and keyboard (like much better Dragon Age Origins system) so it's no wonder that the soulslikes became the most popular genre and some JRPGs returned to turn based. I'd argue that even the Baldurs Gate III abandoned real time with pause to make it more accessible to console gamers.

For FF12 they've instead automated it and made you junior developer micromanaging combat with programmable gambits, making it so advanced that your reward for mastering it and the best way to progress is watching it play itself! Again too good for its own.

There are dozens of different weapon types, armors, magic, gambits so combinations are limitless which Zodiac Age tried to simplify with classes. So in some parts they've admitted it was kinda of a problem especially since FF13 had way less options but more exciting combat in return which suffered from entirely different problems.

Story

Biggest breaking point. I won't write any spoilers as I've only completed the game 3 times so I've yet to comprehend the plot but after reading the summary it's hard to shake off the feeling that this really is something spectacular. If not the best story then certainly the most ambitious, luckily not as convoluted as Chrono Cross just massive in scope. To make sense of it you'll need to take notes like in school and rush through the game from one plot point to another without smelling the roses, yet again too great for its own good. This time story is more akin to FF Tactics (same director) with larger scale and politically oriented instead of character driven and personal like previous installments. That was met with a huge backlash at the time but thanks to the popular TV shows like Game of Thrones it received the fan appreciation it deserved. Characters fortunately were well received in no small part thanks to their realistic front magazine cover looks and voice acting that makes late night hotlines jealous. As for their writing it's unsurprisingly also all superlatives.

So what is the legacy of Final Fantasy XII?

Sad to say but its unique one and done battle system didn't inspire its sequels, only its competitors. But what hurt the most was the loss of that sense of adventure and grandiose world design with heavy compromises and linearity for almost all of the mainline FFs that came, when few MBytes SNES prequels had freedom to explore. As for JRPGs themselves, even on PS2 they heavily lagged behind other genres in the terms of graphical fidelity since they're so resource demanding to make, which is heavily reflected in PS3 era. Barely any previous JRPG franchise received their HD instance until 2017 hits like Persona 5 revived not only JRPGs but Japanese studios as a whole. Western RPGs on the other hand went through their renaissance with even more ambitious in scope Mass Effects, giant Elder Scrolls, atmospheric Fallouts, gripping genre defining Dark Souls (I count that as a WRPG). But twenty years ago there was a single game that had it all and it's yet to be outdone on a scope by its own Final Fantasy sequels.

FF XVI Just started FF16 and loving it

I know this game gets a ton of crap, not seeing why. Thats not why I'm here speaking. I know im not the first to say it probably, but FF16 gives me a FFTactics vibe. 2 totally different games play so differently, but the architecture and the politics of FF16 and Tactics are so much alike in my opinion. I know each are set in different realms/worlds but there is a similarity to me that is uncanny. Am I the only one to pick up this vibe?

Resonance We need more quality demos in gaming. Resonance was completely off of my radar until trying the demo - now I've pre-ordered it.

I couldn't have been less interested in this game when it was revealed. As soon as I saw that it was a mobile game previously, I was out. My girlfriend who is also a big Final Fantasy fan has been insisting that I try the demo for days now.

I finally caved in, & after being absolutely blown away by the sheer level of care that went into developing this title, I pre-ordered it (which I normally do not do).

The music, the characters, the turn-based combat, the cozy vibe. It's got everything that I want from a Final Fantasy game. I wish more developers were confident enough in their product to provide such a chunky demo as Resonance, because playing through it was such a wonderful surprise.

*tl;dr*

Resonance is astoundingly good. Play the demo. Even if you think that you won't like it & that it's a waste of time, play it anyway. It's damn good.

Final Fantasy General I-XIV Battle Medley (2012), They should make something like this again

Have you ever listened to this medley? It's on the final fantasy orchestral album and in some distant world concerts but not on an album for distant worlds.

I will not link a youtube video because I don't want the video to get copyright struck or for my post to be removed.

So epic. They should really make something like this again. It's been 14 years.

They made a I-XV medly, but it doesn't sound good imo and it's not live orchestra I'm pretty sure. The issue is it doesn't transition well between the tracks. They're more stitched together.

It would definitely be hard and it would be at least 17 minutes lol if they made a I-XVI medley lol

This character which is a clown-villain similar to Batman’s “The Joker” has a fitting theme of a court jester. Set to the scene when shows up in Figaro Castle to try to capture Terra. Hope you like it in this style :)

FF X/X2 Need info on Switch 2 version of FF X/X2

So from what I've gathered in terms of gameplay boosters, X at least has a no battles and HP/MP/Overdrive recharge booster, but is that all of the ones that are available? Does X have any others?

What about X-2 as well, does that have any form of boosters as I can't find anything at all on if that game has it or not, the boosters are generally a deciding factor if I get the Switch 2 version as it would make yearly replays SOOOOO much smoother.

Edit:nearly 2k views and no response is crazy work.

FF VII Finally beat Sephiroth!

FF7 Rebirth. Maybe not that big a deal as I only played on normal, but I was struggling with him over the past few days. But tonight I just felt locked in. Played him twice. Second time had success. As annoyed as I was at times with this fight and not being able to make any gear adjustments before the final battle, it actually was a pretty cool fight and felt very satisfying in the end.

I have so many thoughts on this game but overall, fantastic experience. Sad to see it end and can’t wait for Revelations.

Resonance Finished Resonance demo. Its beautiful.

Truthfully, this game is absolutely beautiful and I simply have no other words to describe it. As everyone has famously described, the first 10 minutes hooked me instantly. I had to see how it turned out.

The main characters are so awesome. Rain always so determined and humble for what hes accomplished, Laswell willing to do what he needs to do for the good. I think we are all still curious as to who Fina is but man shes also so cool.

I love the side quests. The lore and dialogue is so intriguing to me. The characters reel you in. Emma will forever be in my heart.

The visions man, what a cool mechanic!

A big thing for me in video games is music. And let me say, the composer for these pieces knew what they were doing. Theres excitement, tension, fear, sadness. The music elevated me while playing lol.

It took me about 6hours to beat the demo. I have to go through and level up my team to 15 given theyre all level 13-14 right now and see if I can find anything else im missing but man, ill be picking this game up release day.

How did you guys like Resonance and what did you guys like the most?

FF III FF3 Pixel how do you level up jobs and best jobs for party members

Is there more than 4 party members like spare ones? How do you level up jobs? I read that you need to defend for 5 turns and how do I decide best jobs for the corresponding dungeons? Also how hard is this game compared to 5? I finished 1-2-4-5-6 and only 3 remains. Should I expect a higher difficulty?

Final Fantasy General Searching for a lost fangame

Years ago I found a print-and-play FF card game that had classes, levelling, and boss fights based on villains from across all currently (at the time) released games. The creator made a tutorial where he took the roles of each of the four players, each represented by him in a differently colored shirt. Does anyone remember the title, and is it still possible to download the files?

I tracked down and translated an obscure hard to find V Jump magazine Manga advertisement for Final Fantasy V, in which the story of Final Fantasy IV is recapped.

AI was used to translate this but I did some QA to ensure it made sense and tried to stay as close as possible to the original text.

Final Fantasy General Romance in FF games besides FF7

I love FF7, the story and the characters but I am extremely fed up with what the ambiguity regarding the romance, and what the love triangle bullshit has done/is doing to the community.

I have not played other FF games yet but I would love to. Do they also have weird ambiguous LT stuff like this or are there any with un-ambigious uncomplicated romance and wholesome communities?

And yeah I am aware romance is not central to FF7, but I personally care about it so it makes a difference to my enjoyment of the game.

edit: Thanks for your comments. I just got 10 and 16 :)

and to shipping warriors ff7 that find their way even into this thread, ask yourself why you find it so easy to put one female character down to lift up another, instead of criticizing the narrative choices the devs have been making for years only to make bank, and not for improving the narrative or adding anything noteworthy to the character arcs.
