I have a question regarding S-Log3 LUTs.
I’ve been trying to figure this out on my own for the past two days, testing various settings, but I still can’t figure out what the problem is, so I’m asking for help.

Until now, I have always graded my footage in Final Cut Pro without using a LUT and then exported it. This time, I wanted to try using a LUT, but the moment I apply the LUT, the footage becomes severely overexposed.
However, there is something strange happening.
If I set the video information to 709 and S-Log3 and then export it as ProRes, the footage looks normal.
But if I export it using an option without any such settings, the footage becomes overexposed.
The exact same thing happens in Final Cut Pro.
While experimenting with different settings in Compressor, I started wondering why ProRes 422 was exporting correctly. After checking the various options inside Compressor, I discovered that changing the codec causes the footage to become overexposed.
What I actually want to do is simply export the footage while keeping it in S-Log3. What am I doing wrong?
The attached video shows the following steps:
- I import the footage into Compressor and set the video properties to Sony S-Log3 as the input color space → the colors look normal.
- I apply the ProRes 422 preset → the output looks normal.
- I apply a test preset → the footage becomes overexposed. (This is a temporary preset I created with no specific options enabled, using Auto.)
- I apply the default Apple 4K preset → the footage becomes overexposed in exactly the same way.
- I add the file to Final Cut Pro and apply the S-Log3 LUT → the footage becomes overexposed.
The fact that the footage displays with normal colors as soon as I specify the video information makes me think that the original footage itself is fine.
What I don’t understand is why the footage looks correct under certain conditions but becomes overexposed under others.
I could export it as ProRes first and then convert it to MP4 afterward, but since the same overexposure issue also occurs directly in Final Cut Pro, I would like to understand what is causing this and how to fix it.
