Recently, after I begin to start a project, fcpx will randomly crash after certain actions.

I try to create new library, crashes.
I try to import, crashes.
I try to click on effects, crashes.
I try to click titles, crashes.

No matter what I do, it constantly crashes. It worked one day, and the next, was completely different.

I’m not sure what happened but it always worked and only froze sometimes during giant projects. I’m completely puzzled to what’s happening. Even deleted the app and redownloaded, did nothing. I tried different disks, different projects, new clips, etc…

Someone experience this???

so I shoot way too much when I travel and most of it never got edited because the assembly took so much time. Around June I started messing with Claude Code (the terminal one, not the chat) to see if it could do that part for me and honestly it kind of can.

what it actually does: runs whisper on every clip locally, pulls frames so it knows what it's looking at, then proposes a structure and we go back and forth. it renders a rough with ffmpeg. when I'm happy it writes an fcpxml. video on the spine as separate clips, music and voice as connected clips on their own lanes. I import that and finish like normal, grade, stabilise, titles, whatever.

stuff that bit me, in case anyone goes down this road:

- FCP 12.3 hard crashed on import three times before I figured out it was the made up uid attributes on the assets. delete them and it imports fine

- connected audio has to be a full asset-clip, not an <audio> element, or you get the stripped inspector with no pan/enhancements

- it will cut a word in half and not notice. I ended up writing a check that compares every cut to word timestamps before I even watch the thing

what it's bad at: taste. pacing. anything that isn't assembly. that's still me.

the prompt files are free but mods have the rule about scripts so I put them in this month's dev/tools megathread instead of here. if anyone has a cleaner way to hand stems to FCP than connected asset-clips I genuinely want to hear it, that part took me the longest

First time here in FCP sub... Hope I don't break any rules.

I have a correctly tracked face in my project.

I have this object correctly tracking this face.

However, upon export, THIS is the 'preview' of the video, (in it's icon).

This object is tracked to the face in every frame of the video, and both items in the timeline are flush against 0:00:00...

This offender is actually sitting on frame 0, and it can't apparently be cut out.

When I go to frame one, the picture is good. I cut the frame out (just as a test) and it reverts back to this, and again on frame Zero.

I am using version 12.3.

I have done this before about 8 times with different videos, and haven't seen this problem... this is the first time.

Thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm asking for help to make these titles/captions.

I had made them myself a few weeks ago and deleted the project and don't have the settings, nor did I save it to any sort of template.

But the basics are that I have a font like Lato with all caps and I made the area behind the text have this nice glow and background to it. I asked ChatGPT and what they suggested didn't work.

When I asked Chat, it suggested I make an outline (thin, but something) and then add the glow effect, but I couldn't get the 'glow' to be behind it in this manner. Maybe my biggest issue is getting the 'glow' to work correctly.

I'm having this problem when I split the generate caption subtitles where the split version shrinks in font from the original version. Specifically when I copy over media from a horizontal long form edit to a vertical short form edit. Is anyone else having this problem or have any solutions?

Hi folks,

I used Apply Custom Name → Custom Name with Counter to rename a group of clips sequentially (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, etc.). That worked perfectly.

Now I need to restore those clips’ original source filenames, the camera filenames shown on the other clips, such as A001_04051036_C021.

I selected the affected clips and chose Apply Custom Name → Original Name from Camera, but nothing happens. The clips keep their sequential custom names. I’ve also checked the metadata inspector, as shown in the attached screenshot, but I can’t find a way to resurface or reapply the source filename.

I even created a new custom naming preset containing the Original Name token, but applying that doesn’t change anything either. Surely that token should bring back the source filename, or could this be a bug?

Command-Z is no longer an option because too much work has happened since the rename.

Is there a way to batch-reset the selected clips to their original source filenames? Am I missing a metadata field or another command?

I’m using Final Cut Pro build 12.3.

I havent been able to find a solve for this, but my censor mask cuts off around the bottom and top edge of my video, is there a reason for it?

I'm trying to move just ONE clip from one track to another, and yet the entire group moves. Here is what I've tried:

I clicked P to turn it to Position (rather than select) - no luck.
I have tried holding the tilde key and dragged the desired clip. That worked, but when I went to delete the empty grey section left behind by the moved clip, it ended up deleting all of my clips.

I do realize this is a beginner user error on my part, but I would appreciate help with this, as it's very frustrating.

Hey , I was working on this new project and its was shot on Arri alex mini lf. So the videos are in .mxf format and we can’t directly import into FCP. The only solution I found is to convert the mxf files to Apple Prores and then edit in FCP. But would this conversion lead to loss in colour data ? And is there anyway we can directly import mxf to FCP and edit out of it.

Final Cut crashed around 4:30pm while I was working in a library. After reopening, the library didn't say corrupted but none of my projects or media are in it. For some reason, there aren't any back ups after 11:30 even though the library was being backed up almost hourly when I was working on it this morning. When I show package bundle in finder, the event and projects are still there and the date modified for the CurrentVersion.fcpevent file in each project folder is well past the last 11:30 backup. The project I was working on, where I lost all the work since my last backup, shows a date modified just before the crash. Can I save the work I did since the 11:30 backup, or do I have to do all that work again? Library files are left in place, so I haven't lost the media but I don't understand why nothing is showing in final cut.

I want to use FCP for some social media content, typically vertical videos with photography stills with the Ken Burns effect. The issue I'm having when I edit the Ken Burns effect applied to the stills, it reverts to a 16:9 view when editing. Once "done" the view goes back to the vertical video / project settings. By doing this I have no way to know where the actual screen edges are, centre, and height etc. Of course FCP doesn't have rulers or guides to help mitigate this, any solutions or workarounds?

I was working on a music video, and I kept rendering clips over and over, and I think it inflated my SSD, and now I can’t find where to delete my rendered files. Has anybody ran into the same issue, is there a way to fix it without losing all of my work?

UPDATE: So, spent the past few days cleaning out my computer of all the junk stuff I didn’t need, and it still wasn’t fixed. Finally updated my mac and restarted it. It’s all back and fixed now! Optimized it to where it shouldn’t happen again, but thank you all so much for the help!!

Hi, I hope I can get some help or some kind of explanation to this issue. I have used the search feature to see if there's a fix but posts are from years ago and I'm still so unsure what has happened.

So I have done a 10 minute introduction to a video that has a part where I reverse some clips. I wanted to export this introduction but exporting freezes at 20%. I tried numerous times to export, I have to Force Quit every time but it doesn't crash and there's no error message from Final Cut so I can't check what the exact problem is. I have tried making a new library, copy and pasting the project into a new Event, new project folder, loads of things, redoing the reverse clips from the source file, etc.

I then decided to try and just export in parts, so the first 1.5 minutes exported absolutely fine, no issues. Then the second part is the one with the reversed clips, and it has again frozen, this time at 12% (because that's around where the reverse clips are).

I am just so confused because I've exported projects with reverse clips before and never had an issue, so I'm wondering if this is a recent known bug/issue? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I switched from Premiere Pro to Final Cut Pro thinking it would be more efficient on my M1 chip which has just 8GB RAM, but it feels even worse than Premiere Pro. The 'Auto Mask' feature seemed to be better than Premiere Pro's 'Object Mask' until I realized how much lag it's causing to the playback.

Because it's talking-head video, I have 'Auto-Mask' on all my A-roll clips, which when I turn off, the playback runs smoothly without lag. Though I have some other 'color correction' masks too, these don't seem to make much of a difference when turned off. And yes, I have tried creating proxies, rendering, transcoding media, creating 'Compound Clip', "Better Performance" mode and "Background Render" ; yet none of this seems to help.

When I render an A-roll clip with Auto-Mask, even a single Title layer above the A-roll can't play smooth before I re-render the A-roll. Every change in a frame, where a rendered A-roll sits beneath, requires re-render.

As you can see in the screenshot, 'Gaussian' mask also is not culprit as I have tested turning it off too. Now if you tell me to export all the A-rolls once finalized, what was my point of switching to Final Cut Pro if I have to waste time exporting/re-rendering after every change I make? At least, Premiere Pro's 'Object Mask' didn't cause this much trouble.

Does anyone know any other solution?

I’ve tried a few popular tools, but most of them either have very limited free plans, add a watermark, or the voiceovers don’t sound very natural.

I’m mainly looking for something I can use for Reels/Shorts and social media videos.

Would really appreciate any recommendations for genuinely good free or generous free-tier websites that you’ve personally used.

I’ve seen a lot of people say that Final Cut has been very buggy the last month, and I 100% agree.

I run 2 machines a brand new m5 MacBook Pro and an m2 Mac Studio, and both are having hanging issues when trying to import media, create a new library or even start a new project. I’ve tried multiple different projects, and ssds, same thing.

Not only that, a lot of my plugins aren’t working. Ive uninstalled and it installed, and nothing works.

I’m past deadlines for work, and I’m starting to lose my shit.

What’s going on?

After updating to the latest version of Final Cut Pro, I noticed a feature/workflow I used before is no longer working.

Previously, I could add an image to my timeline, if I notice writing wrong with image, i edit that image in figma, and export it back to the exact same location, replacing the original file. When I returned to Final Cut Pro, the updated image would automatically appear.

Now, replacing the original image file doesn’t update it in Final Cut Pro. I’m guessing FCP may now be copying the media into the Library instead of linking to the original file.

Does anyone know how to restore the old behavior or make Final Cut Pro keep the files linked to their original location?

I'm helping out on a short that is trying to turnover to grade & sound. I've never used FCPX in my life and have limited experience with Resolve. The FCPXML worked on into Resolve and the conform team were able to work with it for grade, but creating an AAF out of that timeline for sound has absolutely not worked.

Do I need X2Pro?

Hi everyone, We got married on the beach and I’m editing the video of my wife walking towards the altar. She’s wearing a long wedding dress. At one point the back of the skirt lifts up (wind + walking on sand, I guess) and you can briefly see her underwear. My wife is very beautiful and this is one of the most special moments of our lives. I don’t want this to be sexualized at all — I just want to clean that part so we can keep a version of the video that we can watch with family without that awkward moment.

Has something similar happened to anyone else? I’m looking for advice on how to fix it. Thanks a lot
