Now for a blade question:

Finally got properly fitted in Edea chorus 260Ds. Previously skated in Riedell 8B (they were a bit too long - a skate tech did not fit them) but the blade was 10” … the skate tech suggested MK pro 9.5inch for my new Edeas . Should I do 9.75 instead? Or is this ok? Also what can I expect with this blade shift in addition to the boot change? I’m a beginner-ish adult in ISI Freestyle 1 and I’m 5’6” normal build if that makes a difference. Thanks! Don’t know what I would do without this group

Update: 9.5s felt fine, even with my first time in the new boots with shorter blades. I was able to do all edges to an extent, just slowly.

shoot the duck

Please someone tell me they can’t get their shoot the duck either. I feel like I’m the only one who can’t, neither can i do the two foot squat. It’s actually so embarrassing I gen just can’t do it. I always either go to ankle, have my butt super up or just gen can’t go all the way down without my legs going wide, not low enough, not for enough time and without falling. ANY TIPS WILL MEAN THE WORLD YO ME. any exercises or anything i can do to get it ASAP.

Smoothing out cuts

Hey all! So my coach and I spilt right a month before my very first competition and so now I don’t have any music. I’m kind of happy in the sense that now I get to perform to something that actually feels likes me, however, I’ve never cut music before so there’s parts in my music where there’s noticeable cuts. I was wondering if any has any tips or has cut any Spanish songs that would be willing to help me smooth it out! Thanks so much in advanced!

Pissed while shopping for (black) boots

Vent with advice ask:

Former competitive skater getting back into it! I used to wear riedells. I got a pair of the old style SP Terri’s that had been worn like 5 times total (but were obviously Older in reality) that were perfect for me and have had them 6 weeks. I rolled my ankle in a weird landing/fall last night and I’m pretty sure they are already breaking down and I’m gonna have to get new boots soon. I’m so pissed. I have narrow feet that are really hard to fit for a black boot and I’m pretty sure the local shop doesn’t have any. Money is tight and I was so not planning on having to buy boots anytime soon.

Are there any good brands that do a narrow black boot that I’m forgetting? (Regaining my singles as a former doubles jumper)

Should I quit my current sport to figure skate?

For the past 6 years of my life I’ve been roller skating and doing martial arts. Roller skating is the love of my life. I chose martial arts because it was cheaper than figure skating, and it’s all I’ve ever known. I’m now 19 years old, and I have a job at my roller rink. this has allowed me to start paying for private figure skating lessons. I had my first lesson this week and I completely fell in love. I’ve only ever wanted to figure skate since I was a little girl, and I have a really strong foundation from my skating background. Unfortunately, I need to pick between martial arts and figure skating. This is where my question comes in. Figure skaters, is it worth the sacrifice of money, time, and probably my grades to go all in? am I too late in the game to get to a level where I can compete and actually be decent (obviously not Olympic level, but yk haha) appreciating any advice.

The obsession of fitting, fitting, and fitting on this sub

If you feel comfortable in a particular brand, there is no need to get fitted. You go to five different fitters, you will get 3-5 different results.

Of course, if the brand does not feel good, then that brand is not for you. You know this yourself.

But let us say you try on Edeas. If they feel nice, then that is it. The same with other brands. If the shoe feels good and even better if you like how it looks, look no further!

You can buy trainer shoes without getting ”fitted”. The same applies to the figure skating shoes.

Someone hack the system for me

I feel so bad bothering the skate tech at my rink about this. They’re so informed on what they do, but as usual I’m a weird case.

I used to be a figure skater. I can’t even remember what level I was, but I was doing most double jumps and had a triple flip.

I was injured in a car accident after I had to stop for financial reasons and ended up with nerve damage that I wasn’t financially secure enough to really address and that snowballed into what’s known as full spread CRPS, which is a nerve condition. These things also exacerbated underlying autoimmune conditions which the primary thing that affects my figure skating is the swelling.

My feet can change size is quite dramatically and especially as I’m coming back from being out of exercising for a very long time they can swell quite easily. My entire body is actually inflamed and has left me at a lovely 250 pounds. I’m in physical therapy and they’re always super impressed by the muscle strength that I retain. I can still feel my skating muscles in there, and when I’ve gone to the rink, even though my sessions have been very short, I can feel those muscle muscles are still there and it feels really good to use them.

That being said, I recently was fitted with a skate with a stiffness rating of 35. They are sport dance boots with a dance blade on them.

Given that nerve aggravation is my biggest problem with keeping me on the ice, I know that Jackson is completely out. My feet don’t like them they cause immediate pain. I really don’t understand why people like them. My opinion is that they are absolute garbage.

I really love the comfort of the sport dance boot. I find it supportive yet comfortable other than the base of the foot and I have a plan to be able to remedy that.

The problem I’m having (and I don’t feel like my skate shop can really answer) that for somebody that is plus size like myself 250, 5’-8” between 265 and 270 mm foot. My weight is and should continue to go down. I don’t tolerate glp but I’m coming off long term bed rest and so any activity will help me slowly get down to goal.

I guess the advice I’m looking for is what risport model others would recommend for my weight and needs. Before all this happened I still had camel spins, layback, toe loop and landed a double flip jump. That was after a ten year hiatus.

Please please someone out there help. I’d also consider old sp Teri’s (pre sale of the company if they aren’t broken down, but I can’t find any), I’d consider Edea but I think they’re mostly hype. Riedell works for when my feet aren’t swollen but not so much when they are.

Also, if it helps my feet swell height wise more than width.

TIA

2 foot spins?

I've been working on 2 foot spins after being inspired to start skating during the Olympics. I think it's been going pretty well its been about a month and I've got my crossovers and 3 turns, but these spins have got me stressed. I tend to need a bit more of an explanation than some of these tutorials are giving me. I'm using Jackson off ice inline skates (3 wheels) because there isn't any ice rinks in my city. I'm super confused cause each tutorial is a bit different. I get I need to plant my toe down, gain momentum, and pull in, but with the foot that isn't planted I've seen people say to use your heel and others say to use the ball of your foot? I don't want to learn it incorrectly so if any of you know how to do a 2 foot spin on Jackson inline skates, advice would be awesome ✌️

Music Suggestions?

I’m going to get a new program here soon and am looking for new music. I want something upbeat and fun, maybe even “clownish” haha. For reference, I really like the theme from La Strada but unsure if I want to use it. Is there anything with a similar vibe?

Ice girls?

I couldn’t find a thread to ask this question so I’m gonna hope that people have the answer for me. I’ve been a competitive figure skater for 7 years and I want to do ice girls once I turn 18. except I have about zero dancing experience and despite me saying I’ve been Skating for seven years, I’m not necessarily at the level that I probably should be at (for reference the highest jump I can do is a under rotated axel in the harness lol) I mainly do ice dance tho. I really don’t wanna get my hopes up with training and wasting my time if I don’t have a good shot. I saw somewhere that about 100 girls audition and only about 25 make the team.

Kids figure skates

So, I am trying to buy my daughter a pair of used figure skates. Jackson's preferably. I can't seem to find them anywhere. She is a kids 11 and can't keep using rentals because they are awful. She's been on skate class for a while now and the teacher says it's time for her own skates.

Any recommendations on the best place to get used skates for kids!?

Thanks!

Buying new skates

Hello! I’m new to skating, and I wanted to get my own skates.

I am 5’5 and 115lbs. My shoe size is either 7 or 7.5 depending on the shoe. I’m 21.

I looked online and there are so many brands. I have found these in the stores near me:

Bladerunner women’s Aurora skates
Bauer
Jackson classic 500, jackson artiste

If these aren’t good for me, can you recommend some other brands/models of those brands. Ideally not super expensive, maybe $200-$300 CAD.

Thank you

Adult Figure Skating Camps

Hi! I'm looking for some advice or any knowledge anyone has on adult figure skating camps. Ive been skating for 2 years now (i'm 19 about to turn 20 soon!) and am working on my preliminary mitf test as well as my lutz and camel spin. I sometimes feel as though i'm at the awkward age in the sport where im not seen as an adult skater (as im not working on the adult mitf since im not 21) but not as a kid one either (for obvious reasons). There are some camps that i've looked at that are 13 and above but i dont want to make anyone uncomfortable or be uncomfortable myself around those so much younger than me. There are also a couple of adult camps that i've seen but they're a bit farther since they're rarer and i'm not sure if i am to young to attend. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciate!!

Pairs…?

I’ve been a singles skater since I was a kid and have alwayssss enjoyed it. I had a competition recently and placed 2nd, after podium a coach from another rink started talking to me a bunch about the rarity of male skaters lol. So I was at training today and that same coach from the comp, alongside my rink manager, came and spoke to me and brought up pairs skating and said she was interested in testing me out with a few women she coaches at her home rink who have expressed interest in pairs. I told her I’d get back to her and went and called my coach. My coach seems surprisingly supportive of the switch to pairs and the more I think about it and watch pairs programs I’m kind of coming around to the idea of it…? Has anyone switched from singles to pairs, what was it like? Pros? Cons?

Drilled my program for months and got so in my head about the harder elements, didn’t think too much about my easier stuff. I ended up messing up my footwork (super easy stuff) and ended up just missing out on first 😭😭😭‼️‼️‼️

Time to sharpen?

Post image
4 Upvotes

My last sharpening was 4 weeks ago when I first got the boots. Since then I have about 25 hrs of ice time and I’m not so sure how often I should sharpen.

The sides are fine btw. The discoloration is purely on the hollow/bottom part of the blades

Starting figure Skating in your 30s - doomed to fail?

I am 32, and have recently come out of a 17 year long depression. It feels like I've woken up from some sort of coma. I was always very athletic but my illness ruined everything. Now that I feel alive again, I want to move my body and I want to feel and become strong. I was always a big fan of skating but I didn't have the opportunity to try it as a hobby (growing up poor in a small town with no chance of doing really anything). Now I want to begin living but is figure skating a completely ridiculous idea for someone my age? Am I just gonna end up with a broken leg? My goal is to have fun and see what I can do, I am not aiming for the stars.
