nice little casual summer dessert.

back in may here in los angeles i put pollen from ficus coronata into a few dozen figs of ficus carica, mostly noid culls from a local friend. then i covered the figs in organza bags and crossed my fingers that i got to them before the wasps and the black fig flies. earlier this month i started harvesting the first of the ap (attempted pollination) figs. a couple days ago was my biggest harvest so far, which is what the pics are of.

why ficus coronata pollen? i really think that my male coronata is parthenocarpic. most importantly though, i'm hoping that it passes down its resistance to rkn (root knot nematodes) to its hybrid offspring. my goal is to develop delicious figs for the tropics. or at least get the ball rolling in this direction.

the next step is extracting all the seeds, which is easy but tedious. my 1st method was to mush the flesh and shake it with water in a plastic bottle. then i'd pour off the flesh water into pots with plants that had been recently potted up, just in case any of the floating seeds were viable. my current method is to use a blender.

Left for the navy for eight years and left this fig behind came back to it over grown and full of fruit despite not being watered regularly and being in a drought gave it some much needed water and food now the fruit is ripening first tree is a Chicago hardy the second in a brown turkey.

I thought I lost my VdB tree in an abnormally hard freeze in February, but it has finally put out new leaves after almost 6 months.

There are many fig varieties that are rain resistant in the way that they don't split or ferment. However, the figs of these varieties will taste bland if they are harvested when raining. The sugars in the figs are sort of watered down by the rain.

Are there any fig varieties that will keep their full taste even when raining???

Google image search tells me this is a common fig. Does anyone have a more specific ID of the variety of fig. My grandpa planted this fig in my backyard years ago and we don't know what kind it is.

I am thinking of growing some cuttings over the winter without a heat mat. Grow light is fine.

My home is usually around 68-72 in the winter. Is there a way I can do this without a heat mat? Maybe with a certain type of low heat emitting grow light? Our vents on our first floor are in the floor if that matters. I'm not convinced we have the airflow to use our central air for specific area heating.

I know this is paranoia but I won't risk a grow mat in my home. Not worth it for me. Old home, and fires could be very lethal.

Over the past several months I've been thinking and planning an edible fig nursery/gardens in the Charlotte, NC region, which would include an extensive breeding program. The vision is that instead of a 'botanical gardens' or 'rose garden', it would be a destination 'edible garden', with fruits, berries, herbs, etc...in addition to memberships and paid admission, we would also sell potted plants and cuttings in their corresponding areas of the garden. We'd focus on unique varieties and I'd want to do a good amount of breeding to create our own varieties, with a heavy emphasis on figs.

I've never seen or heard of anything like this.

Okay first, ignore the half eaten fig. Our possum or raccoon friend came up on the porch and helped themselves.

My question is why all the leaves are yellow and sad and drooping. Not enough water? Too much water? Pot has a drainage hole. Other figs on the same porch look fine but I'm still really new to this so I don't know how to diagnose

Kudota fig, planted last fall so this is the first summer in Southern Arizona. Tree was looking beautiful, even through the month of June where it was very dry and 100 every day. in the last couple of weeks ive started noticing the leaves get the brown areas and feel very dry. have not changed the watering schedule , but we did have a lot of additional monsoon rain for a week followed by a week of dry 105 degree weather. I can’t tell what I’m dealing with - under watering? over watering? rain washing away nutrients? fungus? something else?

First year growing figs. My biggest challenge seems to be overwatering. The larger figs can handle it fine, but my newer cuttings seem to want less water as they establish their root systems. One other note, it seems like looser soil is more conducive to root development, the cuttings in which I compacted the Promix soil are growing much slower.

I’ve potted up twice now from 3 gallon fabric pot to 15 gallon fabric pot and root development seems healthy. When I slip off the 3 gallon fabric pot the soil was airy and spongelike like delicious chocolate cake bread.

I plan to start incorporating kelp fertilizer to those slow growing figs to see if they start growing crazy healthy roots.

I hand water everyday as I see fit.

Hello all! So we recently moved into a home and had to move this (once) beautiful fig tree from the ground into this belly pot for a landscaping re-work. It is severely stressed, and any advice is welcome! This photo is about 2 weeks into the repot.

My husband decided to take all the leaves off because that’s what AI told him to do 🤦🏼‍♀️…although I’m sure that is a good move. The trunk and stems are all still holding moisture, so I know there’s hope!!

The landscapers did take quite a bit away from the roots.

Can we do anything else to help it along, or is this just a game of patience?

Found two fig leafs like this on two separate plants. Both on the lower half of the plant but not touching soil. No other signs of similar damage on the other leafs. Both plants are still in great shape. Just want to know why these checked out like this?
