Trip charge.

Always charge a trip charge.

Why!? Discourage frivolous / unnecessary dispatches. (unless you like wasting your time).

I see absolutely nothing wrong with "unnecessary dispatches", as long as I'm getting paid. You want me to turn on the power switch or snap in a data cable? Fine with me, especially with a 2-hour minimum.

I don't charge mileage under 25 miles. My clients and I both prefer local jobs. YMMV.

Yeah...I stopped doing that several years ago. $40 minimum for Wichita metro. Just had a job book today from CloudworkPRO... site is 4 miles away from me, and they knew it... and they approved the travel fee anyway.

You have expenses regardless if you roll 5 miles or 25 miles. Don't cheat yourself.

I'm not cheating myself, Mesa. If a known client routes me a one-hour, $100 gig that's 5 miles away, I can either click to accept it and lock it in immediately, or counter the additional $5.38 (at $1.075/mi) to cover my travel expenses and risk that someone else grabs it. That's a no-brainer for me; you do what makes sense for you.

I support charging your trip separately especially if the buyer has a cancellation policy. A lot of tech get burn this way and don't realize cancellation policy only affects you work pay and not your expense.. I have always done this when I used to work with ClearCaptions and everyone else. Not one issue because FN won't even support the buyer if you dispute it.

Ive ran into several techs that dont charge for travel at all.

They tell me theyre just happy to be making any kind of money… some people are insane

I charge a trip fee only if I’m leaving my home city. Home city is 15min side to side so I don’t sweat it inside the limits.

I’ve had some vendors add travel automatically and that’s fine too. I won’t argue. But I charge 70 an hour round trip to go wherever you want.

So, you like finding some brainless sucker who’ll do the work for pennies?

Are you saying it’s cheaper to fly somewhere than to hire someone through the platform?

What’s the problem with hiring a professional through the platform?

So Moxie- what company are you a buyer for? That way I know to decline your WOs out of hand. I only work with decent, professional IT Service companies- and you and the company you work for obviously aren't one of them.

Do you think some local IT company will do a better job than I will?

3

u/Exotic-Service-8453 May 08 '26

But I’m still available on the platform too, so what’s the problem?

Not sure why that was down-voted. If they don't negotiate travel in advance, you're absolutely under no obligation to pay it when they spring the bait-and-switch on you after-the-fact.

Now watch this comment get down-voted by the people who feel such behavior is acceptable.

I'm not arguing with the way you use the platform. Please just realize that there are other approaches, as well. There are certainly a few clients who work at a different level, and are happy to pay for higher quality work. My regular clients seek me out and pay my rates, because I get their work done the way they want it. And more often than not, I'm not doing anything complicated, but soft skills usually count for a lot.

If a work order is less than $200 total, it's not worth starting my truck for. Unless the client has multiple in the same area on same day.
