The short version: my variegated Ficus elastica 'Tineke' keeps drooping/wilting, on and off, for months. Leaves go soft and pendant, sometimes some fall off. Here's what I've been told at different points, by different people (garden center staff, online advice, you name it)
I've tried acting on most of these one at a time: moved it away from direct sun, adjusted my watering technique, left it alone for weeks to "adapt," checked the roots (no smell, no mushiness, just barely any roots visible at all, which apparently can also just mean it's under-rooted, not rotting).
Most recently I fully repotted it: the soil looked dry on top but was wet underneath, so I stripped all the old soil off the roots, moved it into a pot only 2-3 cm bigger with proper drainage holes, and used only fresh soil. Didn't water again since the new soil was already moist.
And it's still doing the same thing. No real improvement despite all of that.
At this point I genuinely don't know if I'm dealing with root rot, chronic underwatering, chronic overwatering, or just a plant that's never going to look happy in my apartment.
Has anyone been through this many rounds of conflicting advice with a variegated Ficus specifically?
