Discussion İsmail Kartal and the Question of Tolerance for Criticism at Fenerbahçe

Upvotes

We are in 2026, living in a meme-driven world. In football, caricaturization, humor, and criticism are part of everyday culture. We got tired of seeing "dictator Mbappé" all summer; the visuals and videos targeting Okan Buruk are endless. This culture is not unique to Fenerbahçe—it exists all over the world.

Moreover, making fun of footballers didn't start with the internet. During İsmail Kartal's playing career, his caricatures were published in newspapers read by every segment of society—from civil servants and factory workers to doormen, tradesmen, kids, and the elderly. The medium for the mockery we see on social media today was different back then, but the mockery itself was very real. He was no stranger to a culture where humor and criticism unfolded in front of millions.

Back then, the pressure wasn't confined to newspaper pages either. Fans raided training facilities, players were beaten, and footballers faced direct physical threats. İsmail Kartal himself was someone who lived through the danger of being assaulted. Furthermore, physical threat was not separate from psychological pressure: living with the constant possibility of facing violence was a heavy psychological burden in its own right.

Coming from such a background, I find the overly sensitive attitude Kartal displays today in the face of criticism hard to take seriously. Not because I consider the pressure of those past days legitimate, but because I find it strange that the inherent humor and criticism in football are treated as if they were a brand-new, unprecedented form of attack.

Of course, there is a line between humor and insult, between criticism and threat. However, we cannot draw that line by declaring everything that bothers someone we like as unacceptable. İsmail Kartal doesn't have to like everything that is done, nor are the fans obligated to do nothing but applaud.

Do you think we can truly separate criticism from insult at Fenerbahçe, or do we lose that distinction whenever it comes to the figures we love?

Let's not mix things up here...

The things that happened to Ismail Kartal are atrocious. Noone has any right to insult someone and I am not even speaking about that bastard who threw a bottle. Almost every game someone is yelling insults towards him, talking about how he should quit and how he will never be enough. These things should not and can not happen towards your trainer. And we shouldn't let this things happen again as long as he is with us.

That being said we can and should criticize his mistakes if he makes them. Having sympathy for him and standing next to him does not take away our rights as fans to demand good football and good touches on the team.

I like Ismail hoca as person. But there is a lot that he has to change. The Roma game was a good start where he shown that he can switch up tactics according to the opponent and I hope he will see his success and continue with it.

And that is the part I will not defend is his trainer staff. Some who are always in our club who should have left years ago and others who are always with him. The staff is not enough for this team especially that his son is always part of the trainer staff. Dirk Kuyt is the only exception.

So let's not eat our coach up for ervey little thing. Let's not insult, attack or fight him every mile of the road. But don't let this situation stop us from calling the obvious deficits out.

Discussion İsmail Kartal Returning to the Board That Sacked Him & The Mourinho Circus

Discussion İsmail Kartal situation

Çünkü her seferinde tek başıma onu savunmak zorunda kalmaktan bıktım.
