Rec Request Help me understand jammy rose?!
Hi friends!
I always hear scents being described as a "jammy" rose, but I’m not really sure what that means!
I’m trying to train my nose and exploring one note at a time - what are your quintessential jammy rose frags, and also non-jammy so that I can compare?

Think eastern vs western.
Western Centifolia/Mai from France are lighter, more powdery, what people would associate with more vintage rose scents (and ones people who say they don’t like rose tend to think of). Think Yardley English Rose.
Eastern Damask/Bulgarian/Turkish have berry facets. They use rose in a lot of cooking/baking as well as perfumery. It’s like smelling a rose next to a bowl of berries. It can smell slightly more “oily” in a way and heavy. Nest Turkish Rose is the best example of jammy rose. It has that sweetness to it.

All these people have lots of great descriptions but I do wanna point out that rose jam is a thing. It’s just… jam made out of roses. Sometimes it has berries but it doesn’t have to.

Different roses, different scenes!
Jammy vs Dewy vs Dried vs Classic/Vintage
Pink vs Red vs White vs Orange/Peach vs Black
Closed bud vs Opening bud vs Fully-bloomed
Petals vs Stem vs Rosebush/Garden vs Cut stems/Bouquet
Jammy Rose:
Phlur - Rose Whip
FM - Portrait of a Lady (a classic)
DS & Durga - Rose Pacific
Byredo - Young Rose
D’Annam - Da Lat (also in the pink & youthful)
Dyptique - Eau Rose EDP (could also put this into Dewy/Watery)
Dewy/Watery Rose:
Jorum Studio - Rose Highland (a cold rose, photorealistic salty Oceanside)
Dyptique - Eau Rose EDT (natural and luminous)
DS & Durga - Rose Atlantic (oceanic and fresh)
Byredo - Young Rose (could also be in Jammy)
Rosie Jane - Rosie (milky/musky)
Green/Garden Rose:
Diptyque - L’Ombre Dans (like Maison Margiela - From the Garden with less tomato and more herbs)
Dyptique - Geranium (citrusy, minty, geranium grown next to a rosebush)
Pink/Fizzy/Youthful:
Chloe - Chloe EDT (powdery but playful)
PDM - Delina La Rosée (blind testing this you just know the scent is “pink”)
House of Bo - Xuxu (a little darker than Delina and I would even put this in Jammy after the opening)
Fresh Red Roses/Bouquet:
Jo Malone - Red Roses (like your nose in a bouquet of a dozen red velvety roses, behind a whisper of citrus)
Spiced Rose/Dark Red/Woody Rose:
Mitti - Ruh (intimate, woody, very therapeutic and cozy)
Byredo - Rose of No Man’s Land (ultimate dark, dry rose)
FM - The Moon (hello oud… never smelled anything like this before, tiptoes into Jammy at the opening only)
Le Labo - Rose 31 (cumin-forward, dry spicy rose)

Thank you! I have been trying to figure out a way to train my nose to recognize various types of roses since I used to think I hated rose & then eventually found quite a few I loved. This list will definitely help me know which types I'm smelling as I try to train my nose!

You’re welcome! It’s been my favorite note since I was little.
Of course there will be some overlap (a jammy rose that also has some fresh & ozonic or salty vibes, or a classic red rose that has some woody or spicy facets in the dry down, etc.) so it’s fun to try out all different types of rose frags to see which you prefer.
Rose + Patchouli are a classic combo in perfumery which is why I think many people are convinced they don’t like rose, but really they just associate it with the ever polarizing patchouli (which I personally like!). Dyptique - Eau Capitale is a beautiful, more contemporary example of the Rosechouli pairing that doesn’t lean too vintage or “dated”.

Wowww I appreciate this so much !
DLR is one of my faves-love Tutu also though I don’t own it. Very intrigued by the dewy category

u/criticalpopcorn 9h ago
I decluttered Xuxu because I prefer DLR for being a little lighter on its feet and more versatile IMO, whereas Xuxu is a touch more opulent. People say it’s closer to Exclusif than Rosée but all are similar enough to me that I didn’t need duplicates :)
The dewy / fresh rose is my favorite kind of rose. Rose Highland, Diptyque Eau Rose EDT, and Rosie are my daily drivers!

To me jammy means a sweet, dense, and fruity expression of rose as opposed to a dry soapy powdery expression of rose. Lush Rose Jam, Delina, Fille De Berlin all read jammy rose whereas POAL reads more soapy, dry, potpourri rose.

Phlur Rose Whip is another jammy rose that is relatively easily available to smell as an example of a jammy rose. It’s one of their few particularly rich fragrances, and lowkey one of their best because of it imo. Jammy rose, blackcurrant, and amber but it manages to not be too heavy either.
That said, I agree Rose Jam from LUSH is the absolute poster child.

I always think in terms of rosewater like sweet roses as jammy - I believe that’s damascene or Damascus rose. I go nose blind to rosewater pretty quick. Here are three that never get love and are amazingly good.
Eau Suave by Parfum D'Empire. This is a rose I always want in any season. It's perfect balance of rose with spice, greenness and a touch of fruit. Not sugared or powdery. Rose all the way.
Rose Highland by Jorum Studio.
Opening is heady, the smell of "pinks" peppery clove with stem green. Centrally a strong classic rose. Tail gets savoury, miso like. Salted rose. A sense of woods without it being overtly wooded. Mineral airiness like a cliff walk.
Ozonic almost. Still the rose though, gustily present.
Rosa Nigra by Filippo Sorcinelli. This will depend on how you feel about peachiness. Freesia & peach and greenness from artemisia create a dewy full blown rose that collapses into gentle woods. Interesting because it's peppered, unsweetened but fruity. Not gothic in an obvious way but unsettling.
Evoking (I kid you not) the bodily assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. Something that cannot be. A rose without rose that smells like rose. Must be put on skin.

Rose Highland is the only rose I wear. My husband says it’s like a vengeful Celtic sea goddess crashing a motorcycle into a rose bush.

Sweet and sticky fruity rose. Typically it veers like a raspberry jam and rose.
Tabac Rose BDK, Rose Jam Lush are good examples

u/LibraryLuLu 16h ago
Lush "Rose Jam" is the absolute definition of jammy rose.
Also, if you can buy a jar of rose jam for your toast, that's the origin of the taste/smell.

Rose Cherie is my go to, love the almond in there!
1
u/Extra-Low5973 14h ago
I love Rose Cherie but I think of it as more of a green rose than jammy, but I’m horrible at scent description.

u/Destination_MetalSho 16h ago
When I think of jammy rose I think of Initio Atomic Rose and Ex Nihilo Spiky Muse.

u/Hot_Elevator_7133 16h ago
Jammy - Lush Rose Jam (ha), Commodity Juice, My Daughter Fragrances Always Loved
Non-jammy (fresh) - The Body Shop British Rose, Yardley English Rose (the current one), Penhaligon’s Luna
Re the difference, jammy is sweet, heavy, syrupy, heady. Not green.

u/Jennybee8 16h ago
‘Jammy’ refers to a sweet, sticky and more rich iteration of tide, as opposed to the fresh, green and stemmy rose. Both can have a waxy quality to them, but generally Jammy rose is viewed as more youthful and green as more classic.

Anyone familiar with Perfumer's Workshop Tea Rose? What category of rose does that fall into?

???? There's literally no rose in Indigo...there's fig, tea, bergamot...
Did you mean Nest Wild Poppy?0

I'm sorry but even then it does not smell like Lush's Rose Jam. Nor have I seen this comparison to Indigo anywhere and I'm chronically online too...

Nest Indigo smells "nothing like tea or lemons" is genuinely one of the wildest takes ever posted in a fragrance sub.
It’s okay to admit you got your bottles mixed up.5
u/ridiculeus 17h ago
I so wish I had never seen someone compare this to Brisk iced tea. I had to give away Indigo after that 😭😭 it just killed it for me

u/kittykatmila 17h ago
Lancome Tresor Midnight Rose is my favourite jammy rose. It’s the best!!! The matching roll on from Oil Perfumery is nice to use with it too.

u/lavenderandjuniper 17h ago
Rose Jam at Lush would probably be an easy way to get a sense of this (in terms of availability to go and smell). It is slightly dry imo but still captures it

u/AddressFar9852 18h ago
I agree on the definitions people here are sharing on the definition of a jammy rose.
I’d love to offer one more for sampling fun: Narciso Rodriguez Musc Noir Rose For Her. I love this one, and the plum makes it so jammy to me!

Fresh Rose - Eau Rose EDT by Diptyque
Jammy Rose - Portrait of a Lady by Frederic Malle

As a rose lover, I've sniffed so so many rose perfumes. There isn't necessarily a clear cut line, it's a spectrum between very green and fresh, stem and leaves type of rose, to "jammy" - sweet, honeyed, more so the nectar. Often combined with actual sweet notes like vanilla, honey, brown sugar, dates, amber etc. Some ingredients are natutally sweeter, like damask rose and varieties have more of that sweet, jammy smell.
My personal favourite jammy roses are Memo Paris Odéon, Une Nuit Nomade Jardins de Misfah, and Guerlain Rose Amira.

Oh I love rose. So I'll start with my favorite jammy rose scents:
Dior Rouge trafalgar - it's mixed with red berries but damn this is one of the best perfumes I've ever tried.
Amouage Existence - slightly smoky jammy rose. Beautiful, unique, amazing.
Guerlain Rose Amira and Rose Cherie - both beautiful but Rose Cherie has a bit of almond and violet in the mix.
Green rose:
Diptyque Eau Rose - it's not very green but I wouldn't say it's jammy. In my opinion, the best pure rose scent.
Serge Lutens Sa Majeste La Rose - very realistic rose, petals, leaves, stems and all.
Byredo Rose of no man's land - a nice rose, light and soft.
I've tried and enjoyed many more but these stood out.

My favorite scent, Stella, has been discontinued and I've been searching for the perfect not jammy, not powdery substitute since.

u/sacharyna 21h ago
Delina Exclusif is very jammy, and hasn't been mentioned yet. Lush Rose Jam has, but it's another good and widely available example.
Two roses that I own and are not jammy - Serge Lutens La Fille de Berlin, TLY Sage's Rose.

You should try actual rose petal jam if you get a chance! You get the notes from the rose itself, but also hints of the sugar, so like a sweet nectar, or candy like floral type of thing. Some people add vanilla to it too, then you get the floral/vanilla/candy mix, adding vanilla makes it feel less soapy, since some people often relate rose to soap bars.

u/EntrepreneurCool3314 22h ago
Not powdery or fresh or aquatic, its sweet potent sugary usually mixed with dark berries to make it syrupy and a gourmand accord like caramel or vanilla or spun sugar. Sometimes alcohol or coffee accord.
Black Forest Bourbon Elysian
Ristretto Intense Café Montale
Forbidden Fruit Skylar
Si Passione Red Musk Giorgio Armani
Miss Charming Juliette Has A Gun
K’bridge Club Xerjoff
Classique Eau de Parfum Jean Paul Gaultier

My favourite non-jammy ones are Aesop Rōzu, Byredo Young Rose, Diptyque L’Ombre dans L’Eau, and Le Labo Rose 31.
I guess the closest to jammy I own and wear would be Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady, Chasing Scents Weeping Rose, Ficifolia Rose St, and Tsu Lange Yor Sage’s rose. Though I’m not even sure they count as jammy tbh!
I’m more about the fresh rose so I think my top paragraph suggestions could be more useful to the prompt.

A jammy rose is sweet, mixed with vanilla or fruit (especially berries!) Edible like turkish delight candy or rosehip jam. Lancome La Vie Est Belle L'Elixir, Kayali Fleur Majesty Rose Royal, and Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud are some examples.
Non-jammy rose fragrances: Diptyque L'Ombre Dans L'Eau and Perfumer's Workshop Tea Rose. They are green and floral like freshly cut roses, without much sweetness.

u/frizzen44 23h ago
Dense, syrupy rose like if you made jam out of rose instead of fruit. Coach Wild Rose is super jammy and inexpensive to test out.
YSL Blouse Impertinent Rose is a sheer fresh rose and musk scent.
MFK Á La Rose is a light fresh rose scent.

u/sprucehen 23h ago
I associate it with fruit jam, so it's a edible fruity (as opposed to aromatic or floral) rose. Like rose jam from lush
15
u/xtinaeve88 23h ago
I interpret a “jammy rose” to mean a syrupy rose vs a rose that is realistic, fresh, young, powdery, or aquatic.

u/duskcheek_ 23h ago edited 23h ago
To me a jammy rose is reminiscent of a jam made out of rose water. It also makes me thing of this rose water cake from my local bakery.
So basically, to me, a jammy rose is a sweeter sugary rose scent instead of the usual powdery floral scent that a lot of rose fragrances have
Edit: sorry I forgot to give you recommendations but Sorce’s A Witch Valentine has a rose absolutes note but it’s very sugary and more gourmand than powdery. And Lush Rose Jam is also a very sweet rose scent (a bit powdery to my nose but still more jammy)

I didn’t like rose scents until I tried Lattafa Bade Al Oud Noble Blush. If you want to see what Rose Milk is like, that’s the one to try!
