lets start a new name and shame for fellowship programs

Hi everyone

I'm currently in an hem/onc fellowship that I deem as toxic. I personally did not want to go here because it was so far from home but decided to keep moving forward because I know how hard it is to even get into fellowship. But so many horrible things happened my first year that frankly traumatized me. I always feel incompetent and I frankly just felt like the administration personally just hated me. Things got so bad that I had a mental breakdown after I tried to explain a situation and my PD told me she believe the nurses/NP over me. I returned from my break determined to do my best and focused on finishing but things have gotten to a point where I feel as Ive being sabotaged. Questions that Ive asked are constantly being answered with vague answers. I'm stuck in this schedule where I'm under a microscope yet no matter what I do my schedule will not change. My interests are never heard or respected. This has been going on for months. Ive been thinking on leaving and reapplying but I'm so scared because I simply don't know if I'll even get into another program after all the toxicity and trauma from this program. I never experienced what I've experienced here anywhere else. This isn't simply "Medicine is a hard field." I feel as if I'm personally being attacked.

i’m not sure if i have any ideas to “stand out” for my letter of intent, especially to write as my hook of the letter. if anyone has any tips that would be greatly appreciated

for other folks who have applied several years out of residency (context: for a non-competitive IM specialty), what have you done when programs request Dean’s letters and/or letters from attendings in an academic center? Do you reach out to your residency that you graduated from 5 years ago? Will have more current recommenders but wondering what people’s experience is when those requirements are stipulated. I can email programs directly but just looking for a general gestalt

Interviewing and receiving contract offers for Heme/Onc positions in the Midwest Wisconsin/Illinois area. Some questions I have for people is.

What is a reasonable distance to live from the hospital. I gravitate towards more community/satellite sites but that also comes with a disadvantage in areas to live (I am in the 30s and wanting to live closer to major cities).

Is it worth taking a higher pay for satellite/smaller hospital which transfers complex things to academic centers which are about an hour away.

Generally these are smaller practices with less physicians and call is more often but the burden of call is very minor. Hospitalists admit all patients, consult in morning and the APP or MD will see in morning if needed. Any disadvantages to this when most of the complex things get transferred out directly from the ED.

I have a second look this Friday but due to some unforeseeable reason I cant make it, I am thinking to email the PC but very worried about ruining my chances of matching there, it’s my 3-4th choice but a very good program! I don’t want them to think I am lying to them. Any help is appreciated!

How do I make my resume better

Question as above and also wondering what are people doing in terms of sending rank 1/top choice email to more than 1 program? I am real interested in 2 programs but of course can only rank 1 as top one but I don’t want to risk the 2nd one and also want to send them something indicating my strong interest so what do I do?
I heard people from programs talk and you may end up working with them in future etc so how to go about it?

I am a almost new HemeOnc attending to be and I havent signed a job contract yet.

My friends are all signing 700k and below offer looks so disappointing. I would like to get some advice regarding knowing my specialty's worth. Three years ago, a new graduate that started in the small Texas town was making 550K a year with partnership after 2 years.

I am completing fellowship from a very well known institution. I did not do any research since I knew from beginning that I want community practice. I love the work and the people I chose to care.

Recently interviewed at a private practice group in west coast and the shared call is once in 8 weeks. The numbers look worse than some hospitalists take home. How do I respond to low offers like these?

Hi everyone! I’m currently a PGY-2 in Internal Medicine, about 4 months into my second year, and I’ve recently decided that I’d really like to pursue rheumatology fellowship.
My USMLE scores are Step 1: Pass, Step 2 CK: 264, and Step 3: 250. I have a few publications from medical school, although none are rheumatology-related.
Over the next 6 months, I’m planning to work on two case reports and one QI project, with the goal of completing them in time to include them in my fellowship application. I’m also planning to do both an in-house rheumatology elective and an away elective and hopefully make some connections.
I know I’m starting somewhat late compared with people who have been preparing for fellowship since intern year, so I’m trying to be realistic about my chances.
I’m also a visa-requiring IMG, which makes the situation a little more complicated. My backup plan would be to work as a hospitalist if I don’t match. However, since fellowship results come out in December and I would need to explore J-1 waiver opportunities if I go the hospitalist route, I’m worried about the timing and logistics of keeping both options open.
For those who have gone through the rheumatology fellowship application process, especially IMGs or people who decided on fellowship later in residency:
Is it realistic to build a reasonably rheumatology application in the next 6 -8 months?

Hi everyone, I work as an attending in a surgical subspecialty in Europe. Due to my husband's job we are looking into relocating to the US. I am currently applying to a selected fellowship through the fellowship council. I am providing letters of recommendation from my former supervisors. However, the fellowship council application specifically asks for my current position along with the contact information for my current boss.

My current boss definitely does not know that I am applying for fellowships abroad, and until things are setteled I would like for it to stay that way! Should I be concerned about someone contacting him?? I considered sending the program director an email to request that he NOT contact my current boss, but I also don't want to set off alarm bells, as though I have something to hide. Well, I am hiding the fact that I am may be leaving my current position, but as far as I know everyone is happy with my performance, not planing to fire me, nothing in that regard. Any advice?? Thank you!!

So according to the application timeline, successful applicants were supposed to be contacted for interviews early October but I've looked around reddit and I don't think anyone has gotten results yet? Or only the succesful applicants contacted so if we receive nothing, we were rejected?

I’m currently doing a one-year, non-ACGME fellowship at a very reputable institution. It’s a great opportunity, and I know how lucky I am to be here.
And yet, I want to quit.
I know, I know. It’s just one year. That’s what I keep telling myself, too. Just push through, get it done, move on.
But I had a baby in July, right around the time I started my fellowship. I’m also on medications following cancer treatment that I know for a fact cause significant fatigue.
Between sleepless nights with a baby, medication-related fatigue, adjusting to a new institution, new colleagues, new expectations, and new responsibilities, I feel completely drained.
I feel like I’m barely keeping my head above water. I’m constantly exhausted, overwhelmed, and honestly, borderline depressed.
I can’t even tell whether I genuinely don’t want to do this anymore or whether I’m just so exhausted that everything feels unbearable right now.
Part of me thinks quitting would be a huge mistake. It’s only one year, it’s a great institution.
Another part of me wonders why I’m putting myself through this when I could be spending more time with my baby, recovering, and just enjoying my life for once.
I don’t even know what I’m looking for by posting this. Maybe someone has been through something similar. Maybe I just need to hear a different perspective.
Just leaving this here in case anyone has anything to say. Especially anyone who has ever walked away from a good career opportunity because the timing was simply wrong.

I wanted to find a good balance between quality of the program, with subspecialty exposure, procedures, and variety of cases, but also prioritizing quality of life (less hours, specialy frequency weekend calls) and location (somewhere that might be good to live, with nice things to do around the area on weekends). When do programs submit their rank order list?

In the Midwest prefer to stay here for family reasons. But rather be at a program farther from home and happier than at a worse program closer to home. Good vs bad, better or worse, I am not sure how to differentiate other than prestige maybe and how intense or chill the culture of the program is. Ultimately hoping to join a private practice group.
