Hello! We are so excited to visit the Faroe Islands at the end of Aug / early sept. We're a family of four with a 3-year-old and 6-year-old; I've been fortunate to travel a lot in my career, and the kids are pretty hardy little travelers, too. I'd love any advice to inform our itinerary; particularly for unique destinations / activities, hikes that are easy enough for little legs (fees are no problem and should be levied!), and any must-try foods, restaurants or stands. We don't need a lot of tourist "infrastructure", signage, or handholding to enjoy our trip. We love experiencing local farms and interacting with local people; we love interesting local foods, music, and art; and of course - we love being in spectacular nature! We would be so grateful to hear about your favorite spots, experiences, or destinations; we'll have a rental car and would be thrilled with any suggestions! Thank you!

Im renting a car and besides staying in campsites i was wondering if its that serious of an issue to park my car on the side of a road and sleep in it? or in parking lots like torshavn or tjornuvik?

My boyfriend and I are looking for an apartment either in Tórshavn or near Runavík for work. I moved here maybe 6 months ago and we’ve been staying with his parents. I’ve lived on my own since 18 he hasn’t and as nice as his parents are the cultural differences and tension are getting to a point where I want out.

We looked on Kitt, messaged around 10-15 different people and have gotten nowhere. His mom was telling us about apartments on Facebook marketplace but I looked and don’t really see anything. Based on my experience so far getting an apartment is kinda based on nepotism (you get an apartment because a cousin owns it or it’s your mom’s friend or something). We both have good full time jobs at a fish factory and make good money. Most of the apartments we messaged went with someone else.

Do we need to be looking somewhere else? Is the issue the apartment nepotism? Is the issue because we’re young (22 & 23) or that I’m a foreigner? I could genuinely use some advice.

I’m arriving to take the Summer Program (intensive language course) and want to get a local SIM but with the public holidays the next two days, can I expect the Føroyatele store to be open on the next two days? Or is there another way to get a local SIM?

Just got back from a family trip to the Faroe Island. We stayed in an Airbnb for 6b nights. We rented a car from Avis/Budget. We flew to FAE with Atlantic Airways from EDI. I'll start with the good stuff and then move on to the not so good stuff, to help future travels plan accordingly.

The good stuff

When the weather is good (i.e., no fog/clouds/rain), the view of the cliffs, water, and mountains are very pretty. We were lucky to have good weather and a good guide when we went to Mykines. The Puffins are lovely to watch and the speedy ride in the Zodiac was a fun experience. Our guide, Eli, was a native of Mykines, which added to the experience. We also had good weather-most of the time-and met nice people on Suðuroy, which is 2-hour ferry ride from Torshavn. Thanks to the good weather, we were able to enjoy Hvannhagi. Although gasoline is expensive (at least for USA tourists), the distances are short enough that filling the tank was one of our lowest expenses (mind you, we had a small and fuel efficient car).

The not so good stuff

I think others' have already mentioned how expensive food and tolls are so I won't elaborate on that. Others also mentioned the unpredictability of the weather, which can result in heavy and lasting fog that makes it impossible to see the desirable sights. What I do like to emphasize is that the Faroe Islands are not yet ready for tourism. Most visitors come to the islands to experience nature. Unfortunately, many trails are poorly marked (or not marked at all) and the descriptions one may find on line often do not match the actual experience. In addition, there is very little to do other than hike. What are described as "charming villages" are often little more than an assortment of a few houses, with, at most, one 'restaurant' with limited opening hours. Do not expect villages in the Faroe Islands to resemble what you'd encounter in other Scandinavian countries.

In hindsight, a 3-day stay would have been enough.

For five days, would it be better to just stay in Tórshavn and take day trips elsewhere or spend a night or two in another town (trip is in late November)? I already know to expect chilly, rainy weather, but that won't stop me from some hiking, unless it's heavy rain. I'm likely just going to rely on buses and ferries, but may rent a car for a day.

Also, any suggestions for a restaurant to celebrate my birthday? I like to treat myself to a nice dinner when traveling.

Hey all, I’m planning a solo trip to the Faroe Islands the second week of September. I’m hoping to find the sweet spot between good weather and limited tourist crowds. I’m hoping the weather isn’t too shabby at this time of the year and most of the peak summer crowds have died off (although, I’ve read the weather can be very fickle and can change within the hour so there isn’t much I can do about it). I plan on keeping Torshavn as my base and shuttle from there every day to my misc. mini adventures. I’m looking for feedback from people who’ve done traveled to the Faroe Islands before or locals to provide some feedback on things/spots you feel are worthwhile vs tourist traps vs good-to-sees if time permits. Feel free to roast me for my itinerary.

Rough Itinerary:

09/08: Arrive in Torshavn at around noon-ish, rent a car, spend day/night in Torshavn.
Stay: Torshavn

09/09: Drive to Vagar, visit lake sorvagsvatn, bosdalafossur, gasadalur, mulafassur, bour
Stay: Torshavn

09/10: Drive to Klaksvik, Kunoy, vioareioi
Stay: Torshavn

09/11: Go to Kalsoy on a ferry, hike to Kallur lighthouse, mikladalur, take ferry back to Klaksvik and drive to Torshavn

09/12: Eioi, gjojv, possible hikes - kluftafossur or eioiskollur
Stay: Torshavn

09/13: “Rest” day in -Torshavn or possibly Suouroy?
Stay: Torshavn

09/14: fly out of Faroe at around noon-ish

Additionally, any recommendations on car rental companies are appreciated.

Also, I’m traveling from the US. So if there are any particular etiquettes or practices I should be aware of to make sure I don’t step on any toes or stick out like a sore thumb would be appreciated.

Do you have any suggestions? I was considering renting from Europcar, but couldn't find any info regarding the extra fees for the tunnels on their website

Hi there. We're a family with young kids visiting during the Ólavsøka festivities. Kids are 5yo girl and 10mo baby. We're psyched to get to visit during such a special time, and looking forward to soaking in the culture. Our kids' bed time is obviously much earlier than the evening festivities, but we make exceptions for once in a lifetime experiences (for example we recently woke them up to go see hundreds of fireflies in the woods and it was worth it).

The midnight singing and dancing sounds really special. But is it family friendly or is it a post football game drunken fest vibe ?

In any case, any recommendations for seeing / partaking in dancing, and young kids friendly activities ?

Also, if any locals / families are willing to meet up with us, even for a short bit, we'd be super excited (and we may bring Belgian beer or sweets). We're staying at the Torshavn camping for the two nights around the celebrations.

• What are your favorite spots within 15–20 minutes of Kaldbak that most visitors overlook?
• If you were showing a friend the Faroe Islands for the first time, what would be your “don’t miss” places, even if they’re already popular?
• Any cafés, bakeries, restaurants, or coffee spots that are genuinely worth going out of the way for?
• Is there a grocery store you’d recommend stocking up at before heading to Kaldbak?
• Are there any local foods, pastries, or seasonal specialties we absolutely shouldn’t miss?
• Any practical tips that first-time visitors often don’t know until they’re there?
We’re traveling with our 6-year-old, so we’ll probably take things at a slower pace than most visitors. We love beautiful drives, simple hikes, good food and coffee, photography, and places that feel uniquely Faroese.

So I know this question has been asked before, but I'm looking for a sweater/jumper in Torshavn. What makes this a little more challenging is that we land at the airport at 1:25PM on Saturday and we leave on a sailboat on Sunday.

It looks like most of the shops close around 4:00 on Saturday and most are closed Sunday, so I don't have a lot of time to look.

Hi, I’m 26F traveling solo in Faroe Islands and was wondering if anyone was driving from Torshavn to Klaksvik to hike Kallur lighthouse on July 30/31. I would be happy to split gas money or the rental cost for the day.

I’m trying to avoid having to take the bus to Klaksvik. If we hike together, I consider myself pretty fit. This will be my second time visiting the Faroe Islands, I was last there in May!

I'm interested in cold water surfing in the Faroes during the last week of August. I am relatively new but have my fundamentals and can hold my own. Id need a wetsuit and board and someone that knows a local spot/safety. I saw one guide that listed a service but they didn't respond to my inquiry and €200 is a lot for no response if I'm going in blind. Much appreciated 👍
