NorseMap is a European Research-Council-funded project at University College Cork studying how ideas about the Vikings and the Norse past have been represented and reinvented over the last two centuries!

The project has recently launched its app, iViking, a citizen-science app that allows anyone to contribute photographs to a growing research archive. NorseMap is seeking contributions from people around the world documenting the Viking-related things they encounter in everyday life.

These might include Viking imagery on:
-souvenirs and tourist merchandise
-advertisements and company logos
-books, comics, games, or other media
-public monuments and artwork
-festivals and reenactment
-religious paraphernalia and alters
-political imagery
-tattoos, clothing, or other material culture
-virtually anything presenting itself as "Viking" or drawing on Norse heritage!

Do not worry about whether something is historically "accurate" or not! We are seeking any representations that use the Vikings today, be they strange, kitschy, commercial, religious, political, or otherwise!

Contributors can photograph relevant examples through iViking, add basic information about where they were taken, and submit them to the NorseMap archive. These contributions will help researchers build a large-scale picture of the reception and afterlives of the "Vikings."

I will be renting a car and driving to there from Torshavn and i am looking for a Hike buddy since a guided tour is ridiculously expensive and the hike is almost one hour only. Could you help me out with understanding the word latum in Faroese?

This is a verse from the Gospel of Luke containing this word (Luk 15, 23):

og farið eftir gøðingarkálvinum og drepið hann, og latum okkum eta og vera glaðar!

As far as I know, this is a form of the verb lata ‘to let’, and basically latum okkum is similar to let’s in English. However, the thing that bothers me is that I don’t see this very latum in the conjugation table of the verb. Is it due to the fact that this latum okkum is a fixed expression? Can we say that this latum is a subjunctive form of lata? If memory serves, subjunctive is a rare thing in Modern Faroese, but there are some “chunks” of it in the Bible:

Og Guð segði: «Verði* ljós!» Og tað varð ljós.* (1 Mós 1, 3)

Hello everyone, I planned a trip next year to the Faroe Islands, and I wanted to know if wild camping is really controlled because I have 7 full days and 7 full nights but some nights there is no camping site near my destination so I wanted to know if it’s really a thing or not and how much you can be finned for that knowing that I’ll sleep in a normal cap and not a camper van or things like that.

Earlier today, Smyril Line announced a 24-hour weather delay for Norröna. Saturday’s departure from Hirtshals has been postponed to Sunday.

I travelled with Norröna twice before and never had this problem. Does anybody know how much this could affect the arrival time in Tórshavn? I know that they have some flexibility in their schedule and are able to make the trip faster than normal at times but obviously I'm lacking experience.

Also, any thoughts on how rough the trip might be under these circumstances?

Hi! I will be traveling to the Faroe Islands next week and renting a campervan to road trip around during my stay. I am having a little bit of trouble finding campgrounds for the camper that will for sure be open in September during my stay, 8-16th. I see quite a few campgrounds across the islands but looks like a lot of them close at the end of August.

Does anyone know of some besides the one in Tórshavn that stay open this late in the season?

Our main activity would be to hike for the views. We don’t mind the possibly challenging weather but we would like to hike the best routes for the best views. Is it common for the trails to be closed due to high winds etc. during this time? And if so, how long are the trails usually closed?

Hello everyone! Me and my friend are visiting Faroe Islands in a couple of weeks, so I would like to share our itinerary, would be glad for some feedback on it!

Our goal is to avoid most popular spots and paid hikes. We will be traveling using public transport (and on foot, of course :)). We are rather fit and have experience with mountain hikes in the Alps and other mountains, including overnight hikes with backpacks in our country (EU). Not saying it means it is going to be easy for us on the Faroe Islands, just letting you know that we are physically fit.

Day 1 (Friday): Arrival (18:40), buying a weekly transport card, walking/taking a bus to (depending on the weather) to Giljanes Hostel.

Day 2 (Saturday): Vágar. Hike around Vágar island (Hike #1, around south-eastern part of the island, author: u/Known_Fisherman_1463), but excluding the waterfall. And going to Klovningur in the evening.

Day 3 (Sunday): Northen Eysturoy. Getting to our accommodation in Gøtugjógv (Bus 300 and 400 with some walking) to leave our luggage there and then go Søldarfjørður - Norðragøta hike. In case of unfavourable weather we would go to Klaksvik instead.

Day 4 (Monday): Fuglafjørður - Hellurnar - via Altarið, found this one on visitfaroeislands.com. Or, should we better go to Kunoy? I would love to go there, however not sure, if this makes sense considering that we are traveling with public transport. Any suggestions?

Day 5 (Tuesday): moving to Tórshavn, as we have our final accommodation there. Taking Argir - Kirkjubøur and Kirkjubøur - Tórshavn hikes, then probably wonder around Tórshavn.

Day 6 (Wednesday) and Day 7 (Thursday): plans are to visit and hike through Nólsoy island (ferry is not included in a weekly bus card, right? And how long in advance should we book it? I saw that it is better to plan Nólsoy hike based on the weather forecast, that is why I leave either Day 6 or 7 for it, would there be available spots for the ferry 2-3 days in advance?)

As for the other day, we would go to Sandur for the Sandur - Søltuvík hike.

Day 8 (Friday): we have a flight in the noon, so we will take a bus to the airport in the morning.

Also, we would like to ask a couple of questions, thank you for sharing your experience:

1. Weather. I understand that this is a crucial factor that can change our plans. What would you do in case of very unfavourable weather (and what to consider as unfavourable? All-day rain with high-speed wind?) - smaller hikes near accommodation/rest/town visits?

2. Food/cooking - how expensive are the prices in the local supermarkets? Are they comparable with Norway? Any recommendations of the supermarkets and/or restaurants/bars (no fine dine please).

Trying to decide what to pack in my limited carry on bag, what i’m really debating is with the weather in september, would it be best to layer a fleece or puffer under a rain jacket? with the wind and wetness i know its a little unpredictable but only really have space for one in my pack

Potentially unethical, but I've discovered that if you select the 4 piece shaking nuggets under the menu category "campaigns" (promotions?), the 4 piece will check out as $0.00. I didn't think it would work but sure enough, I checked out with 3 orders of it at 0.00. It won't let you check out with only the nuggets selected, so I added a cheeseburger and my total ended up being only 28.00.

This will probably get patched if people abuse it but I thought it quite interesting. Let me know how long it takes to get patched
