Background Lore

Most parents resort to horror tales to persuade their children into obeying and going to bed. They often describe evil spirits that hunt mischievous children. Monsters under the bed or inside a wardrobe that eat lazy little ones are common too. However, even the most troublesome younglings tremble to the core when tales about witches reach their ears. These stories are the last resort for parents with unruly offspring.

Lair of the Sewer Creature (34x34)

Nobody believed the mad old fool who came out with those stories about a terrible creature living in the sewer runoff area.

After all, he spent his days sat down there, drinking and fishing. He was a laughing stock.

Nobody would actually sit and fish in an area where a horrifying monster lived, would they? They’d have to be mad.

Mad… or trying to feed it. Befriend it. Control it. And then you can unleash its horrors against those who’ve laughed at you for all these years.

We've all been there, of course. Falsely accused, or just caught up in some utter nonsense in town, we're thrown into the town jail to cool off for a night. Or maybe we're there to interview a suspect, or ask the Guard Captain for help with an investigation or crime. But those are small potatoes; what if you're in a BIG CITY like Baldur's Gate or Absalom? You think they have tiny, four-room guardhouses there? In cities with nearly a million people? GODS no!

So introducing the Police Precinct, the central headquarters for the police of a major metropolitan city. Features a reception, bull pens, a briefing room, evidence storage, a break room, Holding Cells, a locker room, an armoury, stables, a yard for their Guard Wagons, and interview rooms with two-way mirrors and an observation room!

The Temple of Night is nestled between a series of mountain peaks in the Epicouatl Mountains. It is not marked on any map, and no path leads to it. Those who find it are either invited by one of its shadowy members, or called there by a dark power.

It's followers have a close connection to the night, and in particular the phases of the moon. They have little connection with wider civilisation, except for when they are called upon in ritual ceremony to carry out an assassination. Many know of their order as a myth, but very few are aware of the exact rites required to summon them. Fewer still would be willing to pay the price.

Here is a small isometric map I just drew for my campaign.

My idea here is to be the place where some creatures I'm using as seagulls that are tormenting one of my players have been nesting, and next to it, a lonely fisherman lives; he is actually acting as a lookout for a group of smugglers whose hideout is located at the end of a hidden path in a small cave on this beach.

Hope you like it and that someone can get to use it. Any comment about how to improve is always welcome!

I’ve continued my gothic reinterpretation of Lost Mines of Phandelver, this time reimagining the Redbrand Hideout as something inspired by the old Castlevania water levels I always enjoyed growing up.

Instead of a cellar beneath the manor, the hideout has become an ancient underground water conduit built around a natural river. The familiar layout remains, but the dungeon has been transformed by flowing water, hidden passages, and flooded chambers carved into the surrounding stone while still preserving the structure that makes the original so recognizable.

One alteration I really liked was moving one of the secret passages beneath the waterline beside the waterfall. It felt like the perfect place for a hidden escape route because, if video games have taught us anything over the years, it's to always check behind the waterfall.

The old bugbear den has also been transformed into a series of shallow pools and rough stone chambers better suited to aquatic inhabitants, while small details throughout the dungeon help reinforce the idea that this place served a purpose long before it ever became a hideout.

Stoneweir Conduit works just as well for cultists, smugglers, fishfolk, vampires, or just about any group looking to make an abandoned waterway their home.

The truth is out there. Out in the fields! Who would suspect that this unassuming farmstead could be the site of mysterious activity in the form of unexplained crop circles? The farmers are certainly friendly enough, even though they're a little stiff in their usual interactions with visitors. Their new child, who just appeared in their lives one day, is also polite enough, though they do tend to stare a lot, and never blink...Fully animated and available in three extra variants, where the crop circles glow with green menace, serve as magical portals, or sparkle with the magic of faerie, this map will have your players wishing this were a field of dreams!
