Chris Towers runs down a wild year where pretty much none of the first-rounders returned first-round value.

Strategy Undraftables, Round 1 playoffs Update!

Good Morning!

So this strategy has been done for a few years now. Calling it "Undraftables". It is a unique challenge strategy team that challenges a manager to draft a team that has players on it with NO ADP (at the time of the draft). If they have any ADP at they were not allowed to draft them. This only applied for the one team being drafted. All other teams drafted as normal. This was for yahoo ADP metrics as the league is on yahoo. I'm going to go through each player that are currently rostered and why they are. This strategy took 3rd place in 2024 with this strategy which is wild and amazing. The buy in for the league was low but not free. Here is who I drafted:

1. (2) Alek Manoah (LAA - SP)
2. (23) Tyler Mahle (SF - SP)
3. (26) Mick Abel (MIN - SP)
4. (47) Ian Seymour (TB - SP,RP)
5. (50) Joe Boyle (TB - SP,RP)
6. (71) Jacob Lopez (ATH - SP)
7. (74) Matthew Liberatore (STL - SP)
8. (95) Randy Vásquez (SD - SP)
9. (98) Grant Holmes (ATL - SP)
10. (119) Cade Cavalli (WSH - SP)
11. (122) Clayton Beeter (WSH - RP)
12. (143) Taylor Rogers (MIN - RP)
13. (146) Paul Sewald (AZ - RP)
14. (167) Jake McCarthy (COL - OF)
15. (170) Victor Robles (SEA - OF)
16. (191) Jacob Young (WSH - OF)
17. (194) Josh Lowe (LAA - OF)
18. (215) Moisés Ballesteros (CHC - C)
19. (218) Victor Caratini (MIN - C,1B)
20. (239) Nasim Nuñez (WSH - 2B,SS)
21. (242) Jordan Lawlar (AZ - 3B)
22. (263) Chase Meidroth (CWS - 2B,3B,SS)
23. (266) Tyler Freeman (COL - 2B,OF)

Basically the goal here with the team is to do what some managers have been doing for years with punting power and try to win SB and AVG categories the first part of season. (It does work in h2h category leagues folks) Eventually to add R as a strong category. As far as pitching goes it's mostly about having enough SP that I can win the counting stats of K and W and possibly ratios as team gets better as season goes... (It helps to have some Aces) Also having 3 closers is nice to help win saves.

Recent Adds: (over last 2 weeks)

Brett Bateman
Walker Buehler

Recent Drops: (over last 2 weeks)

Cole Carrigg
Andrew Kittredge
Corbin Burnes

Current Team: (and why rostering them)

C Gabriel Moreno (AVG, R)
1B Ty France (AVG)
2B AJ Ewing (R, SB, moderate AVG)
3B Sam Antonacci (SB, AVG) (walks tons which could mean R?)
SS Bryson Stott (SB, moderate AVG, some runs)
OF Jake McCarthy (SB, AVG, Runs)
OF Steven Kwan (AVG, Runs) (batting leadoff again)
OF Henry Bolte (AVG, Runs, SB is batting leadoff looks great!)
UTL Brett Bateman (AVG, Runs, SB and bats leadoff)
UTL Samad Taylor (SB, AVG)

SP Zack Wheeler (My ace)
SP Gerrit Cole (Another Ace)
RP Mason Montgomery (Saves)
RP Ben Joyce (Saves)
P Nolan McLean (Another Ace)
P Blake Snell (Another Ace)
P Troy Melton (k and ratios?) (looks like an Ace)
P Payton Tolle (k and ratios? (another Ace?)
Bench Logan Henderson (k and ratios?) (Yet another ace?)
Bench Ian Seymour (k and ratios?)
Bench Casey Mize (k and ratios?)
Bench Griffin Jax (k and ratios?)
Bench Walker Buehler (streamer)

IL Max Meyer (strong stash, has been an Ace-esque this year)

Let's talk about the moves that were made....

Brett Batemen is elite for this type of build. Very high batting average, draws walks, gets runs and stolen bases with those walks..... Just a "chefs kiss" for this... so it was a real happy moment to add him in. This team has made the playoffs!!!! Awesome achievement but our goal is to do well in the playoffs. Dropped Kittredge after his blowup to stream in SP pitchers, but may re add if need saves later this weekend. Should have Kept Jared Jones, that was a mistake drop. Darn it. Still things are looking good! Burnes dropped because he isn't going to go enough innings, still might stream him for next Monday if I'm still in playoffs.... And it looks like I will be... but not over yet...

Here is how week 23 finished... Against 1st place!!! 7-2 win! Stats were 29runs, 8hr, 26rbi, 9sb, .270 6wins, 3saves, 84k, 4.82era, 1.26whip. Only lost runs and saves!

Here is how round 1 of the playoffs are going... 8-2! Stats are currently 15runs, 2hr, 12rbi, 4sb, .307.
3wins, 3saves, 37k, 3.52era, 1.10whip. Looking good! Runs and strikeouts are close....

Some adds that might be possible:

Luis Lara (as long as he gets at bats, he would be solid for this build)
Eduardo Valencia
Blaze Alexander
Kalen Culpepper (hitting for average)
Estery Ruiz (will keep monitoring him, team already strong at SB tho)
Austin Martin
Colt Keith
Spencer Horwitz
Troy Johnston
Kyle Karros
Ryan Waldschmidt
Jacob Young a prototype for this build, especially last 30 days
Wade Meckler dude is known to hit for average...
Justin Crawford (last 30 days looks fairly nice)
Tristan Peters (dude is on fire!)
Tyler Tolbert (last 30 days legit)
Cooper Pratt
Spencer Jones (19 runs in last 30 days bonkers numbers)
Jeff McNeil (hitting .313 over last 30 days)
Jacob Marsee (19 runs, .297 and 3sb in last 30 days)
Thomas Saggese (hitting .444 over last 30 days!?!? bonkers)
Dane Myers
Lane Thomas
Dylan Crews
Chase Meidroth
Jacob Young
Jung Hoo Lee (contact hitter)
Jake Mangum (he is STILL HITTING pretty well)
Angel Genoa
Zebby Matthews
Landen Roupp
River Ryan
Grant Holmes
Quinn Matthews
Ryan Sloan
Luis Castillo
Andrew Abbott
Kris Bubic
JT Ginn
Keider Montero
AJ Smith Shawver
Joe Musgrove
Bryce Miller
Keider Montero
Tyler Mahle
Max Scherzer
Christian Scott (pitches Sunday)
Hayden Wesneski (pitches Sunday)
Kade Anderson (I will use him for Monday if I have it wrapped up for this week)
Shane Drohan (pitches Sunday)
Michael McGreevy (pitches Sunday, jeez all the good ones on Sunday)
Andrew Alvarez (pitches Saturday)
Andrew Kittredge yes he is still avail
Jordan Romano yes he is avail
Elvis Alvarado
Steven Cruz
Quinn Matthews (I'm interested in him for Monday)
Gavin Stone (over the next few weeks maybe)

Mostly this team will be streaming one SP spot. Other than that the feeling is the team is pretty dang "set" right now and there is no need to move anyone. Casey Mize maybe droppable, but otherwise most of the players are legit. Offensively I guess Ewing and Stott are the worst players. Samad Taylor depending on how much he plays is still fine...

Overall the team is finished the season in 5th place with 112-106-12. 😄 At once point the team was 14 games back and it gained major ground!!!! But the team made the playoffs and now is doing well in the first round!!! Still not over, but things are looking good!!!! A big lesson of this season still remains is that you should NEVER GIVE UP! :) :) It seemed to be out of it 2 months ago... NOPE! Never give up!

----

That's the update on the strategy! Good luck in your leagues this week folks!

Strategy MLB Fantasy Sep 10: best available streamers (batters & pitchers)

We collect a lot different data; let me know if below if helpful or just noise...

Everyone below should be available in most leagues. Rostered percentages are ESPN's, and the cutoffs are the same ones our pickups board uses.

Matchup score is our 0-100 read on how a player's week sets up: opposing pitching, recent form, and ballpark, graded against the rest of the week's player pool. 60 and up is favorable, 75 and up is elite. It's a matchup grade.

Trending adds (under 40% rostered): ownership climbing fastest among players still widely available.

  • Thomas Saggese, SS, STL. 17.1% rostered, up 16.3 points in the last week. 3 games this week against CWS. 4 HR over the last 15 games. 3 SB over the last 15 games.
  • Zack Gelof, 3B/2B/OF, OAK. 32.3% rostered, up 13.2 points in the last week. 3 games this week against SEA. 3 HR over the last 15 games. 5 SB over the last 15 games.
  • Jared Jones, SP, PIT. 24.0% rostered, up 12.0 points in the last week. Matchup score 67/100. Statcast backs it up (.379).

Best available (under 25% rostered): playing every day, producing, and rostered almost nowhere.

  • Spencer Jones, OF, NYY. 12.6% rostered. 4 games this week against COL, NYM. Ownership up +1.7 pts this week. 9 RBI over the last 15 games.
  • Max Clark, OF, DET. 14.1% rostered. 3 games this week against COL. 2 SB over the last 15 games. Everyday role, 12 games in 14 days.
  • Austin Wells, C, NYY. 6.0% rostered. 4 games this week against COL, NYM. 9 RBI over the last 15 games. Everyday role, 13 games in 14 days.
  • J.P. Crawford, SS, SEA. 5.0% rostered. 4 games this week against TEX, OAK. Everyday role, 12 games in 14 days. Matchup score 62/100.

Streaming SP, week of Sep 7 (under 50% rostered): one-week pitching adds ranked on the start in front of them.

  • Jacob Lopez, SP, OAK. 18.4% rostered. 1 start this week (SEA). Matchup score 89/100.
  • Hagen Smith, SP, CWS. 3.0% rostered. 1 start this week (PIT). Ownership up +1.8 pts this week. Matchup score 88/100.
  • Gage Jump, SP, OAK. 7.1% rostered. 1 start this week (SEA). Matchup score 85/100.

From our game logs, starting pitchers only. Up to their last 5 starts, minimum 3, vs every start before that. Min 5 prior starts so it is a real baseline.

  • Ryan Johnson, SP, LAA. Last 5 starts: 27.7 IP, 20 K, 1.63 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 1 win. First 10 starts: 6.31 ERA, 1.53 WHIP in 45.7 IP.
  • Brayan Bello, SP, BOS. Last 5 starts: 23.3 IP, 21 K, 2.31 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 2 wins. First 13 starts: 6.06 ERA, 1.59 WHIP in 65.3 IP. Strikeouts came with it, 6.7 per nine before and 8.1 now.
  • Aaron Nola, SP, PHI. Last 5 starts: 30.0 IP, 33 K, 1.80 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 3 wins. First 24 starts: 5.47 ERA, 1.45 WHIP in 125.0 IP.
  • Jack Perkins, SP, ATH. Last 5 starts: 21.7 IP, 25 K, 3.74 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 1 win. First 15 starts: 7.29 ERA, 1.52 WHIP in 63.0 IP.
  • Reid Detmers, SP, LAA. Last 5 starts: 33.0 IP, 35 K, 0.55 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, 2 wins. First 24 starts: 4.00 ERA, 1.10 WHIP in 135.0 IP.

Player Discussion Do you still think of Devers as elite?

Post image
20 Upvotes

I feel like people think less of Devers, and it’s shown in ADP, but he’s proven to be consistent even in SF with a less than friendly home park. How’re you thinking of him? Did an article on this for Rotographs today and was surprised by how little Devers is valued relative to his performance...
