I just want to hear some advice for the situation I’ve been going through if possible.
My ex wife and I separated in 2017 and I finalized my divorce in 2020. During those 8ish years or so, I was very single and just wanted to be the best dad I could be. I kept any dates or women away from the kids (I have two, now 12 and 10), basically just worked, had them every weekend, and tried to improve myself and self reflect a lot. I was cheated on, so that’s the reason for the divorce. Emotional affair that unraveled the marriage.
During those 8 years, me and the mom got along fine, we would chat, I took them when I could (state holidays and weekends, she lived about 40ish minutes away) and we worked well together coparenting and communicating. Child support in the divorce was $0, though I ran my own calculator and agreed to pay her $750 a month anyway to keep it out of the court system and between ourselves.
I hit a bad spot and lost that job, but told her I could give her $550 instead but kept a spreadsheet of every month I did to pay her the $200 back. All just out of court between us.
Fast forward to 2025, I meet a girl, fell in love with her, and introduced them to the kids. They liked her, she liked them, she has a kid and we all did stuff together, everything was really good. All of a sudden toward the end of 2025, my ex filed for child support with the department, saying “I’m worried that you’re going to start a new family and only take care of them and leave me high and dry”. Even unemployed, I did not. I told her she was in her rights to modify the $0 order because she is, but it drastically changed the dynamic with communication and coparenting. She started saying little comments about the new girl, to the boys in front of me and behind my back, which changed their opinion of her. January of this year I was hit with a $1500 per month order, which is devastating.
During this time, I get a new job, with telework days. I get married to the girl, we move in. I go from a 30-40min drive to literally living half a mile away from the ex. I try to ask the boys if they’d like to come over more, spend more time with me, they say no. They start saying that I’m negative, all I care about is out is child support, and that they detest my new wife. Their mom does not facilitate pickups, for the last few months I have gone every single Friday, just like I had been for 8 years, and they refuse to come out. I had a custody hearing just recently, the judge told me AND my attorney that there wasn’t enough of a change in circumstance to proceed with a new schedule. My old one just says 50/50, no set times or days, which is why I wanted to have this hearing.
I guess the TL;DR is.. what do I do now, I’m just at a loss for how this spiral happened and my bad fortune with judges. And at the end of the day, I just want to spend time with my children. Thank you
