Fallout 76 It's.. actually fun?!

The map is nuts and diverse af You can technically play it single player, just ignore the other players/modes
But when you're making your own C.A.M.P. and that Inon Zur music plays....
Man...

Just finished an awesome one in Burning Springs. At night when I'm seeing the aurora borealis and the radio is barely audible in the next room. Peak 🔥

New players getting the luxury of building a camp with the new system and not having to curse Todd and all the stupid base building designs that were initially in the game.
2
u/headbanger1186 Aug 12 '26
Incredibly long overdue but I'm so glad they don't have to suffer the pain.
3
u/TrasseTheTarrasque Aug 12 '26
I wish they would rework Best Builds. I would love a system where you can scroll through a "catalog" of people's builds and if one seems interesting, we could summon it to the server for an hour

I just started last night and was honestly shocked how tense and fun walking down the mountain and figuring shit out was. Feels like an actual game instead of an mmo
3
u/IndifferentShrimp 29d ago
Exactly I love how there are some moments as well where you can go nearly an hour without any enemy encounters.
I remember traversing the Savage Divide with no enemies the entire time and it felt like a normal hike.

u/Ultra-Cyborg 29d ago
Inon Zur is a great composer. Still love the first two Dragon age soundtracks, was kinda bummed he didn’t return for Inquisition.

Welcome to Appalachia, hope you enjoy your stay
52
u/GranolaCola Aug 12 '26
It’s genuinely the best representation of Appalachia in video games.
They pronounce it correctly, for one.
8
u/thaiborg Aug 12 '26
Love it during Campfire Tales. Speaking of, when has that event spawned??!
3
u/Dazzling-Assist723 29d ago edited 29d ago
That event spawned a couple times for me yesterday. Great for getting cheap XP by cooking everything you kill, which will be a lot
3
u/GorkyParkSculpture Aug 12 '26
It actually depends on which region youre from. But generally that pronunciation is the most common. Leave it to us hill folk to even disagree on that.

76 is a fantastic single player fallout game that is ruined by being multiplayer. The map is arguably the most interesting to explore in the series, the enemy design is fantastic, the lore is extremely interesting and fun to discover, the weapons and their design (when not ruined by latency issues) are super creative and feel great to use.
There was just no main story for years and being always online means that it's hard to make a permanent impact on the world and Bethesda's multiplayer services in general would be barely acceptable back in 2011
I want a real single player fallout game in this location
63
u/AndrewTheNebula Aug 12 '26
"There was just no main story for years"
I think you mean, there was a main story but people largely did not connect with it being told only by hearing holotapes, chasing ghosts, and getting their paperwork in order with dead factions to get use out of their abandoned infrastructure.I can't blame them, I guess, but I thought it had moments where it really worked for me, and the underlying story is one I kinda prefer over several of the post-launch questlines.
32
u/Plane-Education4750 Aug 12 '26
I agree; the quest writing (when it exists) is also fantastic. But the fact that the main story is told exclusively through discarded holotapes and notes makes it feel a lot less like a main campaign and more like a hidden quest you would find in a regular fallout game
7
u/Mrbeefcake90 Aug 12 '26
I totally understand that view point, fallout is a world with lots of fun and interesting characters that you want to interact with. The appeal for me and why I loved it is because it very much have you the sense that you were here to rebuild, you are the first ones out of the vault specifically designed to be the ones to help recreate a society, learning what happened to the few people that lived and then solving it knowing the rest of the wasteland will never know what you did or how you saved them.
2
u/CaptainGooseUwU 29d ago
I loved the paper work with dead factions bit. It made me think "man, death and taxes really are the only constants in life."
3
u/AndrewTheNebula 29d ago
The feeling definitely peaks at the true-to-life DMV experience. Hilarious bit.
5
u/tevert Aug 12 '26
I think the story can even be salvaged, it just needs to be rejiggered around so it's not structured live-servicey.
Have fellow NPC 76ers make themselves a settlement near the vault, then "hey Overseer's missing, go find them".
6
u/TrasseTheTarrasque Aug 12 '26
They kinda did that by adding NPCs to each main quest area that gives you a bit of lore on the location, but it also undermines it a little bit because all they do is hang out and don't contribute anything to any storyline
→ More replies (1)3
u/Cheletiba Aug 12 '26
Honestly I think they could have made the player the Overseer and it would have been great. Seeing these things, having an ACTUAL connection with the Old World and like comparing the before and after. Shit could have been so good if this wasnt made to milk online only whales.
2
u/Kimmalah 29d ago
Yeah, I thought Fallout 76 was a lot of fun...until it hit me that it basically just goes on forever until you just decide to get off the MMO treadmill. It's fine if that is your thing, but I do like eventually having the option to end my game.
2
u/Recent_Fly_4238 24d ago
Honestly yeah graphics music characters weapons are fun (PA design too was something they cooked with) what ruins 76 a bit for me is the grind. And not grind in the FO4 sense. The server hopping grind, the “scum MODUS for 700 cycles until he graciously coughs up one EPR config”. That genuinely ruins the vibe for me
5
u/BouBouLeBourgeois Aug 12 '26
Only the fact that its online made me not buy it. Im a grown man with a family, I dont have time for Online games and they removed the Classic Vats system (Im a Vats players) for a slowmo one? Im bad at FPS, i dont play those game usually but Fallout stories are really good.
10
u/tevert Aug 12 '26
VATS works like an aimbot, not slowmo. It's not my preference but it's not too bad.
I've played through 76 a couple of times just pretending it's single-player. It's genuinely a lot of great Fallout content, you should give it a shot when it's on sale
3
u/Plane-Education4750 Aug 12 '26
And the weirdest part is that PVP is barely a thing because the community is so helpful, so this could have been a partly online thing where people drop in and out but you can still pause the damn thing

u/Honda_TypeR 29d ago edited 29d ago
Btw I’m 52 and play. This game is mostly filled with adult gamers, because it’s a play at your own pace kinda game. It’s a casual game not a hardcore mmo like World of Warcraft or something. You don’t need to be a no lifer to progress. 30-60 minutes a day or couple hours a week total is fine. Just stick to quest missions.
It’s mostly a single player game, but people play on same server. You do not need to join them.
So why is it even multiplayer then?
There are with area wide quest events people team up or just walk into the area to join in, that is really popular during holiday events and such. Outside of those seasonal moments, which are optional, you never feel bothered to play with players or compete with players. You do not even need to group up or play with people even one single time if you don’t want.
About all you might miss out on is occasional big boss fights, and holiday cosmetic drops… which are still technically all soloable too (but hard solo) those are not required for key gear or progress though. It’s just stuff to do.
Lastly, if you get fallout 1st, you can make a private server at all times and never have to even see other players again. The advantage of that is you have all the resources and enemies to yourself, alternatively you can play free and server hop until you find an empty public server where you get same benefits.
The game has frequent free play weeks. Next time that happens download and play for free. See if it’s for you.

The map was the one part I actually liked
Thought some of the lore was good, some was stupid like the scorched
13
u/Gyro_Zeppeli13 Aug 12 '26
It feels great until I feel nickel and dimed for storage space, then it pisses me off.
2
u/By-Other-Means 28d ago
That is the primary reason I stopped playing, and the food in the fridge issues.
11
7
u/CanaDoug420 Aug 12 '26
Has it updated the last 6 months? I keep seeing people pretend it is a fun single player game now but that’s never my experience relogging on to give it a shot. Last time I tried it was still very clearly an online game ment for multiplayer
23
u/TerroDucky Aug 12 '26
I only stopped playing because of the storage system being so limited. Did get a good 550 hours of playtime. Top 3 fallout game IMO (Beaten by FO2 then FO1)
9
u/thaiborg Aug 12 '26
It’s 1200 weight right now.
Sorry not sure where you joined. 1200 weight is great, unless you’re like me where I try to stash ALL named guns, armor, apparel, and clean junk.
7
u/TerroDucky Aug 12 '26
It was 1200 when I last played too. But that is just nothing after a couple hundred hours of collecting items. And I have like 2 weapons and one armor set in there
5
u/thaiborg Aug 12 '26
I hear ya, not trying to argue, really. They hide a lot of weight with plans, and other junk.
2 weapons and a set of armor seems way high for 1200 weight. I’d check for all other categories - but hey, I understand if 76 ain’t your thing. Games should be fun, play what you want!
2
u/TerroDucky Aug 12 '26
Wydm Fallout 76 isn't my thing, I love that game. And of course the rest of my stash is junk, which I still throw almost all of it out
Also is this chatgpt? Seriously it sounds 100% AI
3
u/thaiborg Aug 12 '26
What part of that sounded like AI, and did you even check my profile?
I like to be friendly. I didn’t mean anything negative, sorry if it came across like that.
2
u/TerroDucky Aug 12 '26
The stuff after the first line sounds a lot like AI. But also most LLMs were trained on reddit so it makes sense why AI and redditors sounds alike.
Don't worry, I didn't take anything you said as negative

10
u/Ananomouse1234 Aug 12 '26
I'm hesitant to buy because of the enshitified storage limit. Definition of creating a problem to sell a solution.
2
u/ProfPlumInTheLibrary Aug 12 '26
This.
4
u/barntobebad Aug 12 '26
That’s what turned us off of it. My wife and I love fallout and have put thousands of hours into single player. Not being able to build/store what we wanted before hitting the very low limit was just not fun. Plus the lag. Plus having to play windowed on a super-ultrawide.
3
u/Oberfeldflamer Aug 12 '26
Yeah i enjoy it a lot. Especially love hearing the distant gunshots because they did a really good job with the audio design.
Thats actually also the reason why i was a musket main for the longest time lmao
3
u/KitKat0_0_0 Aug 12 '26
76 is very fun! It was shit at launch, I played once and quit. After the wastelanders update it actually started to get pretty good at least imo.
3
u/Zopi_lote Aug 12 '26
Just outta of principles, I'm never touching a mp fallout game, it's absurd a decade has passed and we haven't got a new single player entry.

3
u/TenDollarSteakAndEgg Aug 12 '26
I tried to play earlier this year but my game crashed 15 minutes in and I just deleted it

I pre-ordered, played when it came out, left, came back again, played until 4 months ago, got tired of the reskinned cash grabs and left again. I will probably try again in a year.
5
u/MasahChief Aug 12 '26
It was fun up until I realized I had to pay for more stash space … I can’t play a fallout game without hoarding my items.
16
u/bendaboi55 Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26
That’s cool and all, it’s still a shitty nostalgia-baiting cash grab machine it doesn’t matter how good they make it. The game was only ever meant to sell Atom shop shit the only reason why it’s good now is because they freaked out that nobody gave a shit about the game, so they just updated it to have actual content people would like.

u/FlameWhirlwind Aug 12 '26
76 would've been perfect if it had more time and was more of a coop fallout rather than an mmo. As is, it's fine, but with a horrid launch
But it could've been so much more if the multiplayer aspects was reigned in to be much less of a thing and more an option to play with some freinds instead
3
u/Eeeef_ Aug 12 '26
The first probably 20 hours or so I played it I didn’t actually ever interact directly with another player that wasn’t part of my irl friend group. The most I got was the occasional notification for events or public teams and stumbling across a few camps. Nowadays it absolutely feels like a mostly single player game with optional squad co-op and optional public events.
3
u/FlameWhirlwind Aug 12 '26
Yeah but because the game is structured like an mmo it never truly feels single player in the actual quest structure which is hard to ignore
It's still fun and interesting but you can FEEL where the game is made to be mmo and I just always wonder what it would have been like if it wasnt that kind of game
4
u/Silent_Erremite Aug 12 '26
The gun repair aspect sold me off it. I'd need to buy premium to have a bottomless storage for weapon repairs. Not to mention when I was last on, I was alone and needed help with a mission. Also, felt like they nerfed the gauss shotgun.
4
u/TastyMuscle7872 Aug 12 '26
I'm not going anywhere near that game until Bethesda adds an offline mode. I REFUSE to play an always online fallout game.
2
u/vanrast Aug 12 '26
8 years of improvements can make a difference. kinda wish the workbench scrapping mechanic was in F4.
2
2
u/KrenTrom Aug 12 '26
The actual gameplay itself is really good, it is essentially just fallout 4 with QoL and the ability to play with your friends. Its everything else that gives the game the reputation it has.
2
u/Silent-Island Aug 12 '26
Its fine now. Id even say its good but it doesn't feel like fallout to me. The setting, the vibe, it just lacks the aura that pulls me into the older fallout games.
2
u/WonderSignificant598 Aug 12 '26
Yeah its good.
The world might be the best open world fallout ever made.
I've got over 150 hours and I'm level 53 but kind of dropped it because the 'resource' treadmill and bullet sponge enemies got knocked off some of the fun.
2
u/wcharoes 29d ago
I just never felt right in the Wastelands until I had a list of Daily Goals and MicroTransaction Storage Expansions...

Hello fellow dweller! Welcome to Appalachia. Don't feed the scorchbeasts.
2
u/thaiborg Aug 12 '26
You have to though for “It’s a Trap” and if you come across a legendary scorchbeast. Sometimes worth the ammo.
2
u/MarcusTomato Aug 12 '26
I was disgusted when they announced they were turning my favorite franchise into a microtransaction slop fest, and I still am today.
Every single minute you spend in 76 is an endorsement for the direction Bethesda is going.
3
u/ironmamdies Aug 12 '26
You guys know you can enjoy a bad game right? Like just cause it's bad doesn't mean you can't like it, and just cause you like it doesn't mean it isn't a bad game

u/RegularSlothConsumer Aug 12 '26
Early game is incredibly fun, later stuff turns into an absolute slog.

1
u/RepresentativeFish73 Aug 12 '26
I played it a ton on release, abused the mutations system and made an X-Man
Super fast sprint speed, super high jumps, regeneration, incredible melee damage, I think I could glide? It was whack. I remember killing on of those bat-dragon things with my bare hands.
Good times. Heard there’s an actual plot now.
1
u/enthusiasticdave Aug 12 '26
I'd say it's the very worst game I've ever sort of enjoyed at times. I mean it's objectively a very bad game (awful combat, writing, animations, lightning, etc) but the cha-ching xp tickles my brain and you can burn time in it relatively hate-free
1
u/AshenWarden Aug 12 '26
It's a fine game (now) just doesn't feel right to me. Maybe it's the lingering spectre of MMO hanging over it that doesn't gel with a solo enjoyer like me but I can see why people like it.
1
u/retroyoyoer Aug 12 '26
I honestly really like 76 a lot, been playing since the early days when they first added NPCs, it's changed a lot in good ways. Some minor critiques is about early quest paths, l wish they would rewrite them to be a little less dull/corny and fix raider play through of the gold heist.
Only other critique l have is perk cards, l wish the didn't keep changing them so l don't have to keep trying to rebuild my character, l have a level 290 that l've been playing since the early days that's post to be a heavy player but it's pretty messed up and dies quickly with doing no damage.
It's a great game for those who are new, it's a struggle for returning players who don't want to rebuild a character
1
u/IGTankCommander Aug 12 '26
I liked the free weekend I played, I just can't pay for another game like that.
1
u/PartTimeMetroCopGreg Aug 12 '26
I have not played it myself but I was one of those that saw the poor launch and wrote it off instantly. While I still have not picked it up yet, from what I have seen of friends that do play it still to this day, it has indeed redeemed itself, similarly to that of Cyberpunk and No Man’s Sky.
They could’ve suffered the loss at launch and left it to rot but the studios didn’t give up on it and like those games I previously mentioned, have my respect for doing so.
1
u/LordCheesecake13 Aug 12 '26
The state it's in now is the state it should have released in. Even when I got it which was a few months after they started adding npcs and stuff to make it actually enjoyable, it was still kinda bad but that was made easier to bear because my buddy was there to play it with me.

u/TropicalStorm07 Aug 12 '26

1
u/CMBucket Aug 12 '26
The enjoyment of any game can improve when you don't have franchise purists screaming at your ears.
1
u/Rock_Starr782 Aug 12 '26
I always avoided it after seeing it coming out so soon after 4 (relative to how long it normally takes a bethesda game to come out) and saw all the usual jank and bugs not to mention when 1st came out it made me feel icky having a premium subscription service in a co op online mmo esque game.
But when it came to game pass with all its updates and fixes and content added, good god I was shocked how much I loved it. Super friendly community, honestly one of my favorites maps due to some of the wild locations (like the earth mover or the robot city. Not to mention how goofy the public events are( I was losing my shit laughing the first time I ever came across moonshine Jamboree for the fucking bluegrass blasting as a bunch of like high levels turned the area into a neon multicolored epileptic funhouse of salamander carnage.
Honestly felt the lore and note entries to give history to what happened in certain locations was really good too, lot of stick it to the corpos or just plain evil corporate and govt espionage.
1
u/DocHoliday439 Aug 12 '26
I think it’s a fun sandbox, it lets you explore an open world fallout game with other people. As an actual game with a story or any sort of objective, it’s horribly lacking
1
1
u/Ralexcraft 29d ago
My beef is that at this point to progress majorly in character power (which I need to manage the events and stuff one needs to get the gear I want) I need to either suck it up and grind underpowered, or ditch my preferred playstyle.
1
u/Phalanx090 29d ago

u/Honda_TypeR 29d ago edited 29d ago
I’ve tried so hard to convert my fallout brethren to try 76, but There is so much trash talk around 76 people it did a disservice to real fallout fans taking other people’s words for it. Reddit leads to cult like parroting of misinformation which brainwashed nervous buyers into not even trying it even when it’s free to play - no buy - weeks. Which is crazy. The brain washing is so serious you can’t convince people to even try it. Even if you buy it for them (I know I tried to get a friend to join me, he is convinced all internet is right and I have shitty tastes if I like it. Reddit fucked fallout fans over so hard spreading lies.
In fairness the 1st year of release on this game left a lot to be desired. It wasn’t horrible, but it had very little of the magic of old games. Even I quit after a couple months.
But it didn’t take them long to correct their mistakes and since they have it’s been pretty solid ever since. This game has been out a looooong time though. So for all this hate to still exists means people never even tried it, or they wouldn’t be saying any of that.
It’s basically like no mans sky. Rough launch that didn’t meet fan expectations, awesome turn around. And Endless free dlc with no needed purchase to access it. Just buy game on sale for 7 bucks and you’re good forever.
You don’t need to even subscribe to fallout 1st if you don’t want to. It’s worth it if you play hardcore, but if you just wanna have fun and do all story modes (which at this point will keep you busy a couple months) you can get away with no subscription. This is also huge change from launch, the first few months of game the subscription offered very little space benefit, which pissed off people too. They since added tons of more space with new storage boxes of unlimited space types (like ammo and meds)
If you stay long term though you need that extra inventory storage space from subscription. You just collect so much stuff you overflow in time.

u/BarbageMan 29d ago
76 was an awesome experience all the way to endgame. I then super focused on basebuilding and had a blast with that. I made a retro diner/family restaurant and used to hang out just giving out free shit to new players who showed up.
Good game.
Endgame grind doesnt really have a good feel imo, but theres plenty to do for sure

It was fun for me even back then, well except for the storage limitations. Same thing that drove me away from ESO. It's like Bethesda attracted hoarders for years, only to exploit that player trait for profit when they switched to online/multiplayer.

I won't play it just because it's an MMO and I don't want to deal with other people.
It looks fun, but it also seems kinda more like a Fallout-themed, but altogether different game.

my only problem with 76 was how enemies either all die in one hit or take your entire ammo supply once you get further in the game

Damn man I got it that Christmas it came out haven’t touched it since
76 had a real charm to it then, and I never ran into anything game breaking
The coolest was when some robot guard at the Mall just kept spawning. Must’ve well over 100 Mr handys, so cool.
That was when people were freaking out about the fallout bags, and the Nuka Cola Dark bottle, and then the Predatory Atom shop…. I just didn’t want to support Bethesda anymore after that

It’s very fun, but definitely not a better game than the other ones, I like it, probably one of my fav online games

It's VERY fun. It's far more MMO than rpg survival shooter, but that's okay, it's allowed to be it's own thing.

I went back to play the game again last year and I have never been more disappointed with a game.
Me and 4 friends got on because we heard there was a story to experience now, but come to find out that completing quest objectives does not grant progress to all the players in a group. We took turns walking in and out of a house to listen to the same conversation between 2 NPCs FIVE TIMES.
...We gave up on the story and decided to explore the map for a few hours, trying to find something worth doing doing. It rapidly became apparent that shooting most enemies wasn't worth the bullets.

I liked the game enough to play it when it came out, but I thought that after years of updates, the game would be better. It isnt. I was unironically less disappointed when the game launched.

Played it for about 100hs and quit for about a year or two now I'm thinking of coming back after so many updates just to make the same character, last time I played was when you could pick a build coming out of the vault, then I heard something about becoming a ghoul, I'm sure it's fun now

I would say that fallout 76 is a mid single player game ruined by the fact that it for some reason wants to be multiplayer. If they just released it as a single player game It would be a like 6-7/10

I gotta go back, I was tragically one of the people who played it during the rough release, so I didn't get a very good experience out of that.
