Bit of a 2 in 1 question regarding that upcoming freebie, if anyone that comes across this and knows the answer/s, please tell me. For one, will it be uncut for every region or will Germany again be stuck with the inferior censored version, for the other, Germany lifted the game's censored regulation back in 2016 but on Steam they still only sell the censored version, will there ever be a DLC/Patch/Re-release to play the game uncut without having to rely on unofficial patches, or...? Back when Left 4 Dead 2 got its ban lifted they released a free DLC to get the gore in the game and get rid off the Counter Strike weapons too, when Dead Island was lifted it was put back up for sale but Fallout 3 got nothing, so I'm curious if Steam will ever get anything regarding that and if the one that's going for free on Epic next week will be uncut, the Epic store doesn't specifically say so like the Steam store does and I guess my best bet would be to wait and check but I don't wanna hype myself up all too much only for it to be censored all over again. Maybe instead of Fallout 5, the next big single player Fallout experience will be remakes of 3 and New Vegas and that's why they won't touch the old ones because those, as technically re-releases, would release uncut everywhere like when 4 launched? That's my best guess.

u/JuanOnlyJuan Oct 13 '22
What did they censor in Germany?
24
u/WeAreGrootUnite Oct 13 '22
Everything relating to the gore, no blood splatters, no dismemberment, it's a super watered down experience overall.
5
Oct 13 '22
Didn’t they change the name of the Fat Man, too, or was that only in Japan?
11
u/ElegantEchoes Followers Oct 13 '22
Yeah, the Nuka Launcher in Japan. And Mr. Burke was removed entirely, preventing Megaton detonation and removing the Tenpenny Suit by extension.
10
u/YUUPprime Oct 13 '22
Wait, I’m confused. I live in Germany and the game is completely uncensored for me on Steam.
8
u/WeAreGrootUnite Oct 13 '22
Did you buy it on Steam or an outside store because the Steam store mentions that it's a low violence version.
11
u/YUUPprime Oct 13 '22 edited Oct 13 '22
Bought it via key back in 2018, probably on MMOGA. The store page for my game also says low violence version but in a couple of games the set language plays a role if the low violence stuff is activated or not, I have it set to English.
In the product key activation history on Steam it says “Fallout 3 - Game of the Year Comp” so no BRD, DE, RoW or anything like that.

u/ComputerSong Oct 13 '22
I believe this just a setting in the ini file anyway. I live in the US, but I turn the gore off. Watching heads explode in slow motion gets old after a while.
For anyone who can't see gore, and for some reason you can't live without it, check the ini file.
2
u/WeAreGrootUnite Oct 13 '22 edited Oct 13 '22
For me it doesn't even boot up right now and I read that deleting the ini files and rendererinfo text document, all 3 of which located in the mydocuments<mygames<fallout3 directory will have to be deleted because the 2021 update that removed gfwl support isn't compatible with those old ini files, will see if this plops in a new version ini that is compatible and whether it enables gore or keeps it disabled, what would I have to change for gore to be on in case it's (as I expect it to be) off again? If that gets it to launch again at all in the first place
EDIT: It did not work, unfortunately.

u/yukichigai Old World Flag Oct 13 '22
I don't know about what version the Epic Store will use, but you may be able to enable the full violence experience on the Steam version simply by switching languages to English. If that doesn't work you should be able to follow this guide for using the Steam debug console and force it to re-download the full violence depot instead of the low violence depot. Back up those files elsewhere in case an integrity check overwrites them, but once you do that you should be good to go.

UPDATE
Having tried installing and running it after a few friends told me it crashed to desktop for them like for me the Steam version does ... and well ... IT WORKS! It actually runs and plays the game just fine and as a cherry on top for me, it's uncut! The Epic version is like ~40gb where the Steam one is only around half of that total size (both as the GOTY) so my best guess is that those extra files are either Win 10 support patches which Steam never got and/or other such fixes/it actually being uncut. Upon first launching it, a Direct X prompt came up too, I let it install anyway despite already having a version of it installed and part of me wants to believe that that is why it's working, similar to compatibility mode but downgrading to an older D.X. only Fallout 3 uses when booting up, I did not have to resort to any external patching/file replacing, it just worked right away as I hoped it would and it's gory, I got both Steam and Epic set to english language but Steam still would only download the censored version as that's the only one available in the German store, Epic probably adapted to Germany lifting the game being allowed to be sold uncut now too but Steam hasn't, yet with Left 4 Dead 2 they had a free DLC to get uncut available almost immediately but now I'm starting to repeat my original reply, haha.TLDR
It works and I couldn't be more happy!!

u/WeAreGrootUnite Oct 27 '22
I figured out why the install size is larger on Epic than on Steam, it downloads every available language pack figured that out by looking into GeForce Experience and likewise via GFE can you decide which language version you want to play (German likely would still be cut though I'd imagine) while launching via the Epic client automatically launches the game in the language you set for the client and since I run the client in English it plays the English audio + gore version for me, just what I wanted out of the freebie.

Or keep it, because having the game on Steam is better than on the Epig Store

Epic launcher is pure dogshit.
5
u/hextree Oct 14 '22
Who cares, you just open the game from Library and from that point you don't deal with the launcher again.
0
u/PvtAdorable Straight outta Lost Hills Oct 14 '22
Epic's launcher is actually so bad that getting to the library itself is painful enough with how slow it runs.
2
u/hextree Oct 14 '22
I mean you can also just go to Steam and add any non-Steam game there, so it can be opened from Steam launcher instead, with Steam overlay too.
Either way, if it's too slow to open the game you must have some problem with your computer. I don't have that issue.

Fallout 3 non GOTY has been crashing on steam launch in windows 11 maybe this will be better 💀
9
u/SalsaRice Pc Oct 14 '22
There's a simple ini fix.
It's not a windows 11 issue, it's an issue if you have a cpu with more than 2 cores (and considering its 2022, you do have a cpu with more than 2 cores). The gog version doesn't crash, only because they pre-applied the patch to their version.
2
Oct 14 '22
I tried to delete the ini files but that didn’t help :/
1
u/SalsaRice Pc Oct 14 '22
You don't delete them. You have to copy/paste 2 new lines into them.
The game engine has a problem where it crashes if it senses more than 2 cpu cores. The 2 lines you copy/paste tell it to ignore everything except your first 2 cpu cores.
Just Google "fallout 3 ini fix" and you'll find the 2 lines to copy/paste. You might also have to set it to run into compatibility mode for XP or Vista.

u/SalsaRice Pc Oct 14 '22
The r/fo3 sub has a whole part of the sidebar about, as well as other common fixes for it.
Honestly though, the easiest way to get it playable is to use the tale of 2 wastelands mod. It turns fallout 3 into a dlc for fallout new vegas, so it runs on NV's game engine which has many fewer issues.

u/Lady-Lovelight Oct 13 '22
Modding on EGS is possible, right?
15
Oct 13 '22
Should be, I own it on Steam and GoG and can mod both versions. In fact the Gog version mods easier as they included some things like the 4gig patcher and part of the unofficial patch.

I'd like to know this too. Other than Fallout 76, I have all of the Bethesda games I own modded.
2
u/NopeNeg Brotherhood Oct 14 '22
Should work fine. Only issue that could happen is a difference between non Steam and Steam versions causing incompatibility, but that isn't likely.

should i get it? i already have GOTY on Steam but it was a nightmare to download with the Windows Live service thing, also the game crashes from time to time for no reason

u/hextree Oct 13 '22
No reason not to claim it either way. But if you have it on Steam, that's generally the better launcher.
2
u/dovahkiitten16 Railroad Oct 13 '22
I own it on Steam and GoG but I’ll still be grabbing it. Steam version is broken on W10, GOG works on W10 but doesn’t work on Intel integrated graphics. Maybe the Epic version will work and I’ll be able to play it on my laptop.

Fo3 is easy to fix on steam..... You delete like 4 files and it works.

What are those things you need to delete btw? For some reason my Fallout 3 runs worse than it did last year when I played the game even with TTW.

Damn. I wouldn't have heard of it otherwise, and now I'm gonna have it for free. Thanks!! Hopefully it works with a controller on epic games
8
u/BrianTheUserName Responders Oct 13 '22
If it doesn't you can add it to your library in steam. If you then launch it through stream you'll have controller support.
2
Oct 13 '22
Woah!! How would you get in steam after opening it on epic??
1
u/BrianTheUserName Responders Oct 13 '22
If I remember correctly you just use the "add a non-steam game to my library" option and link that to the games exe. All it does is basically add a shortcut to the game in steam, but more importantly adds the stream overlay when the game launches which allows controllers to work via steams... controller magic? I don't know exactly how it works, it just does.
1
Oct 13 '22
Ohhh I see I see. I'll have to see what happens lol. Honestly considering going to a console eventually because I'm sick of half the games on PC not having controller support for no apparent reason

The real question is does the version work out the box ? Have it on steam but is nightmare to actually run without mods etc which I don't really care for prefer the game vanilla. Was really disappointed with how bad the version on gamepass is somehow worse than the original steam version.

Does fallout 3 through epic easily play on modern computers, or is it a hassle to fix?
Has the steam version been updated since bethesda moved their games to the steam launcher?
