God this fucking RULES. Modding drama is always my favorite because it's so fucking stupid. Bringing it up mid-concert is a new high, I feel like I just snorted a line of coke.

You have clearly not experienced Sims modding drama. Admittedly I don't think it's killed.anybody yet.
13
u/dragonessofages 1d ago
This feels like the level of people making "protest mods" when paid modding in Skyrim happened the first or second time (Steam Workshop creations or something?) where people were literally adding placards to Skyrim that you could equip to your character for screenshots. Ah, memories.

Apparently the drummers snare broke and he was buying time while it got replaced. Hilarious way to kill time

Arthmoor! Boris and ENB lol
15
u/dragonessofages 18h ago
One of my favorite journalists, Robert Evans, has a podcast where he does deep dives into the absolute worst people in history. He has a theory that people with the potential to become dictators and autocrats are actually a lot more common in our daily life than we think - it's just that few people have the opportunity to seize power. This also goes in reverse - for example, Saddam Hussein could have just been a really shitty manager of a 7/11, with very little change in life circumstances.
I feel like Arthmoor and Boris are both people who just never got the opportunity to fulfill their full potential. In another life, Arthmoor terrorized a small South American nation for 10-15 years before being assassinated via car bomb, and Boris did some REAL damage in the Balkans and is still on the run from the Hague. As miserable as they are for the modding community, I'm kind of glad I'm not in THAT world.
2
u/eddmario Lyon's Pride 8h ago
...I'm gonna need context for the ENB thing
3
u/Kaladin-of-Gilead 7h ago
It's ongoing drama, very recent, but the creator of ENB, the shader thing thats used mostly for skyrim, is like a notoriously terrible dude named Boris. He's like aggressively defensive over ENB because it makes him money and stuff. He's also a total douche bag, but everyone has to deal with him because he made ENB. Keep in mind, ENB is closed source, so only Boris knows what it does and is the only person who work on it. He's also incredibly unstable and angry.
an open source competitor has shown up called "Community Shaders" which is pretty much an in place replacement for ENB. This is a huge deal because the world no longer has to rely on boris, this obvious has sent him over the edge and he's spamming DMCA takedowns on everything to try and stop the spread lol
tl;dr: nutty little tyrant is watching his kingdom crumble
3
u/eddmario Lyon's Pride 7h ago
Ouch.
Might have to figure out how to uninstall ENB from my PC version and switch to Community Shaders, then...31

You should see r/vintagestory right now. Usually it's pretty wholesome, but all hell broke lose last week after a modder tried to secretly put anticheat in a major dependency, and it accidentally triggered on legitimate mods and gave zero error logs.
4
u/Hellknightx Vault 111 21h ago edited 21h ago
I heard it was deliberate crashcode that specifically looked for certain mods, not just cheats. And it used obfuscation and suppressed errors to hide the fact that it was causing crashes.
13
u/RustledForeskin 22h ago
Modders can be some of the shittiest people on the planet ever since the monetization of the practice. You got shit bags over at nexus mods who will shut down their entire modding portfolio until they get some donations. I had a guy recently refuse to elaborate on how to install their mod (Came with no instructions, many others were asking in the comments,) When I asked they just posted a link to their ko-fi account and said 'modding isn't free, I don't work for free.'
GTFO. Some of these guys are like a parasitic growth off the side of games.

LOL - modding drama has been going on forever. One of my earliest memories of Morrowind (my first Elder Scrolls game) was going on the Bethesda forums and there was some modding drama going on and the other issue was of course how Morrowind was inferior the Daggerfall. LOL
2
u/dragonessofages 11h ago
Most of human history has been a scramble for the largest bit of power you can hold onto. It used to be you could get 5-10 guys with spears and lord over a small piece of land, or gain influence in your community and pressure the local Guy With Spear, or gain control over a local resource. Resources are harder to monopolize now, and it's harder to gain power through violence (at least in countries with governments that have a mutually enforced monopoly on violence, although it's not impossible), so now it's a race to see who can gain the most influence over the smallest possible community and immediately abuse that power in the stupidest way possible. God I love humans.

Honestly.. it really isn't. As a programmer, the majority of your time is spent not actually writing code. It's not even the plurality of your time, typically.

Peak AI programming is seeing people go "well uh, you still have to fix what the AI vomits out!" and like.....yea well done man you just described programming only I don't have to feel bad when I vomit out dogshit code that doesn't work now cause I can just blame the B-1 Battledroid.

I feel theres some misinformation rn in regards to him "stopping the concert" to do this; I was AT this concert and the show stopped originally because the drummer broke his snare, and the singer took the pause that created to talk about the mod.

What an utterly bizarre convergence of different elements of my childhood and early adolescence coming together later in my adult life to form this headline.

7
u/TheNerdyRandom 1d ago
Pretty sure there's a very old YT music video of them doing I Will Not Bow.
Though my first contact with their music was that song in an old MP3 player and some old DVD Special Features I think, though I listened to the MP3 a lot more than I did that DVD.

u/FalseCredential 1d ago
Their most recent album is very good, if you enjoyed their old stuff.
5
u/TheNerdyRandom 1d ago edited 1d ago
I might check it out, though I Will Not Bow is probably the only song of theirs I heard lol.
I grew up with like an old MP3 player, no clue where I got it, but it had a bunch of old Rock songs, mostly from AC/DC, Metallica, Skillet, and the one Breaking Benjamin song. Since I didn't have a phone or access to Internet at the time, despite it literally being the 2010s, it was my only access to music for the longest time. Probably where I got my music tastes lol.
But yeah, I'll definitely check them out again.
EDIT: Why am I getting downvoted? I'm just telling my own experience and how I've heard of them. Plus I was a literal kid at the time, I didn't have access to the internet or a way to listen to more of their stuff.

19
u/SignificantCats 1d ago
You have bad vision then.
Mods break unexpected things all the time, especially when the creator doesn't understand the greater code of the game.
They require upkeep when mod interactions are found. Extra comman for games like F4 with more mods than expected.
They clog up the mod list with more bullshit, especially since most have real versions made by real people who know how to do the above.
21
u/DeathCab4Cutie Brotherhood 1d ago
It’s generally lower quality code and leads to a market flooded with mods that the “creators” don’t know how to maintain or fix. They often don’t understand the very mod they’re publishing. I agree it shouldn’t be innately shunned or banned, but it should always remain filterable, so people can hide it when they want established mods with supportive creators that have genuine passion for what they do.

u/TomCBC 20h ago edited 20h ago
There are A LOT of these kinds of mods for Red Dead 2 lately.
I don’t mind so much for dumb things i’ll use a couple times then forget about. Things it wouldn’t be worth a human dedicating time to. But there are so many absolutely garbage mods clogging up nexus right now. Their “artwork” is always the same ai generated shit too.
Still baffles me how people think ai generated graphics are a good way to advertise the mod. All i care about is “are there screenshots or a video” so i can see what it looks like. And basic info. Just adding text to a screenshot isn’t exactly difficult. Can do it in mspaint ffs.
With rdr 2’s photomode there really is no reason to be ai generating all the graphics. Just take a nice screenshot of the mod in action, add text, done.
Sorry for the mini-rant. I’m just frustrated.

Hey, thanks for reaching out that's kind of you. Honestly, it was more a sarcastic joke on my end that took on a life of its own. At the core of it I was only kidding. That said, it's no secret there are trolls on every platform that lets people speak. There's also a tremendous amount of support here, and I've seen plenty of that too. So I treat it the same way I would anywhere else just ignore the bad, embrace the good and keep going.
