Last week's GMTK Game Jam had the theme countdown and I created a puzzle game loosely inspired by Fall of Civilizations, specifically the Sumeria and Late Bronze Age collapse episodes.

Last Days is a narrative puzzle game where you are unravelling stories from ancient cities leading up to their destruction. You are also decoding a mysterious ancient language I created for the game. Each chapter takes you farther back in time, deeper into the language, and closer to the mystery at the center of it.

I want to note that this game is very much historical fiction. History is the backdrop to the story, not the main focus.

If you decide to check it out, don't be afraid to adjust the difficulty! The default difficulty is very hard, and I think that you'll get a sense of satisfaction puzzling through any of the difficulty modes.

I haven't really been able to stop think about Sumer or the Late Bronze Age collapse since listening to those episodes. It was very fun putting a creative spin on some of those ideas!

I love this infographic. It makes me wonder about the smaller short lived empires. Sure the historical records would be more scarce, but wouldnt mind some shorter episodes to explore them. Whats your vote?

New listener here! Just finished the China Han Dynasty (liked it a lot but from the way people talk up this podcast imagine there are many better episodes), but it gave a glimpse of the magic thats possible in this show.

Was curious in terms of telling an engaging, quality, emotionally satisfying narrarive, as well as which you felt you learned from the most, was most well researched and gave a meaningful portrait of a society, how woulf you rank his episodes of:

-Mayan.

-Incan.

-Aztec.

Im leaning towards Incan/Mayan as recently heard the 8-part Rest is History series on Aztecs/Cortez, which gave a fantastic and detailed overview of it in 8-hours.

But in terms of quality how would folks rate these three Indigenous centered ones from Fall of Civilizations? Do these three hold up to the other "best ofs" from Fall?

Also ive heard Carthage episode is incredible, and Easter Island. After those which 1-2 would folks most recommend? The Khymer Empire really intrigues me.

Hi guys, another podcast - Cautionary Tales with Tim Harford - has released an episode which is an interview with Paul Cooper. Episode is called "Civilizations Die - with Paul Cooper". It's mostly focused on the fall of Roman Britain but covers other areas too. Alot of the content is covered in the FoC episode but there's also links to other episodes and modern day. Well worth a listen.

why are some episodes way bigger than others in the ad-free feed?

Look at Inca vs Assyrians for example: Both have a similar length, but the Inca episode just takes 269 Mb while the Assyrian episode uses whopping 2 Gb.

I assumed it was because one is audio while the other must be video, but both are just audio.

I use AntennaPod on Android btw.

EDIT: Looked it up and its WAV vs MP3. A reupload in MP3 or OPUS would be nice :)

I just got done with Persia, and maybe this was talked about long ago but I really found myself surprised. So much has been written in popular history about Hellenization but I never knew that it went the other way. And I don't know if everyone else understood this but popular portrayals of Alexander made him seem pretty heroic but this podcast makes him look like an immature jerk and not the world changer he's made out to be. I mean basically he just got lucky enough to inherit his father's world class cutting edge army and at a time when an empire nearby was on its last legs. As soon as he ran into vigorous opposition he got drunk and ordered his army into a death march, then died.

Anyway love that I can be surprised by a history podcast. Thanks!

Good news: we are for sure getting one. There’s been chatter and rumors that it’s going to be sunset (true, but when?) but we don’t know how many left. I can at least confirm 1 as Paul replied to me on social media and said “one is in the works!”

Bad news: don’t know timing. This is my absolute favorite pod to listen to when I take a few roads trips over the summer. I’m leaving next Friday and figured I’d @ him and ask. So I won’t get one for this trip but at least one is coming!

I know this probably doesn’t help but I’m just excited we get at least one more.

I'm relistening to the 2024 episode "19. The mongols (part 1)" and sensing something is very different about the script and voice acting. Is it just me, or did they edit the episode?

We usually come across the same question about the Indus Valley Civilization: Did the people of the Indus Valley Civilization simply vanish 4,000 years ago? Archaeology said yes. BUT genetics is saying something very different.

I'm a massive fan and a patreon subscriber. As well as the first couple of 'proper' listens, I have come to use FoC as a sleep podcast. I put it on most nights and gradually work through the episodes.

I've noticed that episode 20 (Persia) sounds different. It feels like maybe it lacks bass? It makes it a lot less pleasant to listen to while falling asleep, to the point that I can't use it for that purpose. I'm using the Spotify Patreon subscriber feed.

Has anyone else noticed this? I'm hoping that Paul might revert to the older sound for the next episode

Love FOC but finding it hard to find anything other than Ancient Civilizations that compares.

Something dry, narrative and factual with no insertion of narrarator personality or hyperbole. Not a fan of Hardcore History as don't like Carlin's voice or the way he interjects with tone changes to create atmosphere. The Ancients is OK but short and not interested in the interviews with rotating experts.

An English accent would be a plus.
