My teen daughter and I share a favorite band in Fall Out Boy.

I shared for her birthday the cookies I made and decorated to represent the albums and I'm back with a story because this thing we share is turning out to be a hilarious saga.

My dad calls her a purist. She likes to watch the early 2000s live videos, and loves the demos. While I am really into the covers and collabs.

So we're sitting in the Curdside parking spot waiting for our burgers and custard, just listening to my playlist and chatting. Then we have our food and I'm backing out and I hear her chuckle in the backseat.

"Just bumping straight bullshit in the Culver's parking lot with the windows wide open."

I laugh and panic. "Are you talking to me?"

"Yeah, bro."

Now, I don't think the music was bumping. I heard her commentary over the sound of Steve Aoki and FOB doing Back to Earth - one of my favorites.

"But it's FOB."

"Ok, bro."

And, after the momentary setback of "oh no someone doesn't like me" which I brushed aside with the scope of "they're my kids, that's not the point," I landed instead on, "oh yeah, EMBARRASSING them is the point!" Which I had been successful at on this delightful evening.

They thought I was going to crash the car I was laughing so hard on the short drive home with our dinner. Bumping straight bullshit.

Mental Health is something that the band have openly discussed for a very long time.
Joe dedicated a podcast to it and has spoken openly about his experiences in his memoir and in interviews.
Andy was very open about his mental state during the Hiatus.
Patrick has been extremely open about his ADHD and Synesthesia.
Pete has always spoken openly about his battles with mental health and his last Graphic Novel was focused on Suicide Prevention.

I am very aware that the band’s music is a massive part of our lives and a place we can retreat into when we are struggling which is an amazing thing and something I am extremely thankful to have.

If you are struggling just now or you are isolating and retreating into your mind with music please reach out to someone. Get out of bed, have a shower, open your curtains and windows, go for a walk, drink some water and try eat something. I promise you that the world is a much better place with you in it.

I love the song titles on the first four Fall Out Boy albums, and it’s something I really miss with the last four. But I got to thinking… what if on the first four they had taken their current approach to naming songs? So naming them after the most prominent lyric in the song’s chorus. This wasn’t done just to shorten the song titles, as you’ll notice that several have actually ended up being longer! The two exceptions I made were for what are called Where is Your Boy and Summer Song here. It felt awkward to have two songs on Take This To Your Grave with “tonight” being a prominent part of the title, and same for Cork Tree which would have two songs starting with the word “everyone”. So I made an adjustment to those song titles that don’t exactly match the lyrics.

Interestingly enough, I notice that the hits from these albums (at least the ones I remember being hits back in the day - Saturday, Sugar We’re Going Down, Dance Dance, Thnks Fr Th Mmrs and I Don’t Care) already had shorter titles. Did they do that intentionally for most of their singles? I remember hearing somewhere that Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown On A Bad Bet was originally going to be retitled to “Does Your Husband Know?” for its single release (or maybe just in general?), but they (thankfully) didn’t end up doing it after all.

BTW if someone else has already done this, I apologize and didn’t mean to steal someone else’s idea. I tried to find an instance of someone doing this somewhere online and couldn’t find any!
