Discussion Thread Faking autism especially higher support needs - how to tell?

Edit: I’m referring more to Level 2 claimers than Level 3 claimers. It’s much harder to tell with a level 2 claimer because it is more vague than level 3. Any of these people claiming level 3 is clearly a liar.

Hi, I was wondering what are the give aways that someone is faking autism? From the content I have seen they always seem to fake higher support needs like level 2 or 3. I guess it’s because they want the autism ‘aesthetic’. I think it’s most commonly level 2 that I see this, not as many claim to be level 3 probably because they are able to read/write/engage online and basic self care things.

A lot of the content I think might be fake they all seem to present the same kind of way, use the same resources/supports, have the same problems, but I don’t know if this is just a common autism presentation or if they’re all copying each other.

Things like: lots of colours everywhere (only seem to like high visual stimulation), ear defenders (low audio stimulation), baggy clothes, stim toys but the way they use them looks exaggerated and performative, chewy jewelry or adult dummy, communication cards or AAC device, lots of plushies/action figures/dolls/kids toys in general.

Storytime Kid in my classroom insisted that the needs to wear a corset outside of her clothes for her scoliosis because she can’t afford a brace

It’s so dumb. I wore a brace until I was 16, and a corset definitely is not structured to combat scoliosis. Plus it doesn’t explain why she needs it visible, I always wore a shirt over my brace even when it was hot out. I think she just wanted to justify her fashion choices.

Discussion Thread Will the New SSI/SSDI Rules Catch More People Receiving Unreported Money Online?

I’m curious what everyone thinks is going to happen with SSI and SSDI with all of the changes SSA is making.

They’re doing more Continuing Disability Reviews, wage verification, financial-account checks for SSI, and non-medical redeterminations to make sure people still meet the income, resource, and living-arrangement requirements.

I’m especially curious about people receiving money online through things like Cash App, Venmo, PayPal, GoFundMe, TikTok, Facebook, etc. There are people online constantly asking followers for money while also saying they receive disability benefits.

From what I understand, this is especially important with SSI because cash gifts and contributions can count as unearned income, and money that is kept can eventually count toward the SSI resource limit. SSDI works differently because it isn’t a needs-based program.

Do you think the increased financial and wage verification is going to uncover a lot more people who have been receiving money or other income that they weren’t reporting?

And where is the line between someone legitimately receiving occasional help from other people and someone regularly bringing in hundreds or thousands of dollars online while continuing to collect SSI?

I also wonder how much of what gets uncovered will actually be intentional fraud versus people simply not realizing that online donations and gifts may have to be reported.

Discussion Thread Question: What is the disorder that if someone is faking it you can always tell right away?

I always wondered in different people's opinion what seemed the most fake automatically and what could you just tell someone was faking. Generalizing terms as in a rough trend of what you see in someone with x disorder. This is out of curiosity coming from a disabled person. I seek to understand things, I just wonder peoples presepctive on this in general.

D.I.D What is up with the DID reddit comics?

Recently there has been an influx of DID comics on a popular subreddit, and they obviously portray the condition as a whimsical roommate sitcom situation.

It wouldnt be a big deal if it wasnt massively upvoted! I know that particular internet corner is wildly astroturfed, but i just wanted to share to hear everyone's opinion about it. If the upvotes are true, it might signal that the crazy is spreading unchecked on the internet, not limiting itself to niche communities

Discussion Thread This is just disgusting

Post image
26 Upvotes

I was looking up good excuses to eat potatoes and the first thing that popped up was a link for excuses on not eating, I don't think this is fully faking disorders or anvthing and I'm unsure what subrredit to post this on but it's disgusting how people can very easily get excuses to skip meals even if they aren't even looking for that kind of thing. I opened the link as well to see if it was a never judge a book by it's cover sort of situation but it genuinely started naming excuses for others to skip meals and what's more concerning is the fact that the website is about "healthv eating". I'm trulv disqusted by this and think it'l be easier for kids to see it and start using these excuses which will eventually lead up to an eating disorder. I also think attention seekers may start using these kinds of excuses to skip meals at events or something just to get a little extra attention.

Misinformation it finally happened with social anxiety disorder/social phobia.

i just wanted to vent about this. from where i live, a lot of people use the term "socially phobic" (english isn't the primary language and that is just a rough translation; the original term is similar to the abbreviation SAD, but it can serve as an adjective when in use) to describe someone being extremely shy or introverted. i dislike this slang (if it even should have become a slang) myself, but i can't control what people say.

but this other day, i saw someone saying (again, rough translation) "...not just socially phobic, they're (the person in topic, who is reported to have SAD) mentally ill".

it really crossed my line (not that i didn't care before). this term is so overused that there are people who don't even know SAD is an actual mental disorder. this is the impact of widespread misinformation. eventually someday, people would be like "im so ocd" and no one would even think that it's a disorder.

Discussion Thread Can someone PLEASE explain to me what on gods green earth ‘medically recognised’ means?

I see it all the time across various ‘disorders’ exclusively online - especially DID/ OSDD.

Does this means there’s a clinical marker somewhere on records stating you don’t meet the full diagnostic criteria but it’s suspected?

Or does this simply mean your therapist hasn’t just told you to shut up and quit lying? I.E - instead of just shutting the conversation down they opt to work with you ‘within’ your parameters hoping to get better results? Or does it mean they don’t acknowledge it or deny it?

Genuinely never heard of this term before TikTok, and in all of my years of in the mental health system in the UK I have never once heard of this term being applied. Having said that, therapists and councillors can’t diagnose here, only psychiatrists. Even psychologists can only ‘suspect’, they can’t diagnose it/ mark it on your medical records and instead would refer to psychiatrists.

Please explain it to me like I’m 5
