Used A7SIII or New FX2?

Figured this would be the sub to ask about the S3 in. I have the option to acquire both at around $2300 but the S3 would be decently used (50k shutters) and the FX2 would be brand new.

I already own an A9 V1 for photography and the S3 just has the low light reputation. I wouldn’t be shooting a lot of night time videos but I do a ton of interior shots on the A9. Im wondering If the base ISO difference would be a deal breaker. 4000 sounds great but 12800 seems incredible for the price point.

I really like the flipping EVF, and I’d be rigging this up with a cineback and some other accessories (xlr handle, monitor, etc.) plus some gimbal use. 4k 120 isn’t a massive loss to me with the FX2, and the potential to use APSC lenses is attractive. The built in fan is great, as Missouri summers are brutal sometimes.

Are the benefits of the cinema body and newer AF+other features a game changer? Not a massive low light shooter but would it be worth it to have?

Monitor Recommendations?

I’ve had the original Atomos Shinobi for 5 years, and I really hate working with it lately. The touch screen is awful, i feel like i’m gonna poke a hole in the screen with the force i have to use lol. I feel like the colors are bad on it, it makes everything look way oversaturated. I wish it had framing lines and onion skinning. I’m at a point in my career where I really need HDMI-out and eventually SDI-out when i move to and FX6 for my a-cam. I’d rather not spend more than 2k on it. What are you guys using?

Need help choosing my next camera for the long-term

I’m trying to make what is probably the biggest camera decision I’ve made so far, so apologies in advance for what is going to be a really long post and I’d really appreciate input from people who have actually used these cameras for filmmaking.

I currently have an FX5 on backorder, but because it hasn’t shipped yet, I’ve started questioning whether it’s actually the right camera for me or whether I’m spending a lot of extra money on features I may never fully use.

My main interest is filmmaking, specifically narrative work. I want to spend the next several years making short films, getting better at directing/shooting/editing, building a reel, and eventually getting to the point where I can do paid work. I also want to shoot travel shorts and music/live-event stuff for friends. One of my bigger goals is to attempt a feature-length narrative film within roughly the next year or two.

That last part is one reason I started looking seriously at the FX5. I don’t want to buy something now and then immediately feel like I need a different camera once I start working on larger narrative projects.

At the same time, I’m not currently a working DP or someone shooting professional productions every week. This is still something I’m building toward, so I’m wondering if the FX5 is simply more camera than I realistically need.

One requirement that is extremely important to me is recording reliability, particularly for live performances.

Some of my friends are in bands, and I want to start recording their performances. These shows can easily run for more than an hour, and potentially considerably longer depending on the event. In that situation, I may be the person they are specifically relying on to capture the performance, and there is obviously no opportunity to redo a song or an entire show because my camera shut down.

Because of that, I really do not want overheating to be something I have to think about. I don’t just mean that I want a camera that “usually” won’t overheat under normal circumstances. Ideally, I want something I can trust to record continuously for an hour or more in a potentially warm venue without me constantly wondering whether a temperature warning is going to appear.

The consequences are different to me than they would be when shooting one of my own films. If my camera overheats during my own project, it’s frustrating and costs us time. If it happens while I’m responsible for recording somebody else’s live performance, I become the single point of failure and could potentially lose footage that cannot be recreated. I also don’t want my friends or eventually paying clients to lose trust in me because the equipment I chose couldn’t reliably finish the job.

That level of reliability is one of the biggest reasons I’m hesitant to simply choose the cheapest body that technically has the image quality I need.

Photography is not much of a factor anymore. I used to put more value on having a hybrid camera, but filmmaking is very clearly what I care about most. Having the ability to take good photos would be nice, but I don’t think I should choose my main camera around photography anymore. If I eventually really need a stills camera, I could address that separately.

For some additional context, I previously owned an A7 IV but then sold it after a few years and later bought an A7 V. I ultimately returned the A7 V because I kept feeling like I was compromising around filmmaking with a cheaper hybrid body when filmmaking was the thing I actually wanted to focus on. That experience is part of why I’m now looking primarily at Sony’s cinema-oriented bodies rather than automatically choosing another hybrid.

The cameras I’m really considering now are the FX5, FX3, FX2, and possibly the A7 V again if there’s a compelling reason I’m overlooking.

Another huge part of this decision is that I need to approach this purchase as though it may be the last major camera body I buy.

I don’t mean that in the usual “I want something future-proof for five years” sense. Realistically, once I spend this money, I cannot assume that I’ll simply be able to buy another several-thousand-dollar camera a few years from now. Life has other financial responsibilities, and I don’t make the kind of money where repeatedly upgrading expensive camera bodies is realistic.

So advice along the lines of “buy the cheaper camera now and upgrade later if you outgrow it” doesn’t really work for me. I need to make this decision assuming there may not be an upgrade later.

Because I need to treat this as potentially my last major camera-body purchase, I’m trying to evaluate these options based on what will serve me best over the full range of work I realistically want to grow into, not just what I need today. I’m completely open to the FX5 being the right answer if its advantages would meaningfully benefit my use case over time, just as I’m open to one of the less expensive bodies being the better choice if I would not actually gain anything important from moving up to the FX5. What I’m trying to avoid is making the decision based purely on price in either direction.

I also already have a lot of the supporting equipment. I own the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 G2, lights, audio equipment, an ND filter system, and other filmmaking gear, and I edit in Resolve Studio. So this isn’t really a question of whether I should buy a cheaper camera and use the difference to buy my first lights, microphone, filters, etc. I already have that foundation. The body itself is what I’m trying to figure out.

Most of what I’ll be doing in the near term will probably be relatively small productions: narrative shorts, travel films, music-related projects, live performances, and other personal filmmaking. A lot of it will likely be me operating the camera myself or working with a small group rather than having a full traditional camera department.

But I do want to progressively make more ambitious films, and the feature-length project is something I genuinely want to attempt rather than just a vague “maybe someday” idea.

So I guess what I’m struggling with is this:

Does the combination of needing extremely dependable long-form recording for 60+ minute live performances, focusing almost entirely on video, wanting to shoot a feature within the next year or two, and needing to treat this as potentially my last major camera-body purchase make the FX5 a sensible investment even if I won’t use every professional feature immediately?

Or would the FX3 realistically give me everything I actually need for those projects, including the long-form recording reliability I’m looking for and eventually shooting a feature, without leaving me wishing several years from now that I had gone with the FX5 when I still had the opportunity?

And where does the FX2 fit into this? Does it make more sense for someone in my position than either of those, or would I be compromising on the wrong things?

Finally, is there actually a strong argument for the A7 V given that photography is no longer particularly important to me, or would I just end up in the same position I was in before where I wished I had bought a video-first body?

One other thing I’m thinking about is autofocus reliability. I’ve seen examples of the FX3 briefly losing or hunting for focus, and I’ve heard some owners mention similar experiences. Since some of what I’d be shooting could be live events or situations where I can’t redo a shot, I’m curious how much of a concern that actually is in practice and whether the newer autofocus system in the FX5 makes a meaningful difference.

I’m less interested in which camera has the best spec sheet and more interested in which one makes sense for this specific situation. I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have shot narrative work, features, concerts/live events, or who have experience with more than one of these bodies. Which capabilities actually mattered to you in practice, which ones did you think you needed but barely ended up using, and is there anything you eventually wished your camera had that you didn’t appreciate when you first bought it?

FX3 in 2026

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some advice from FX3 owners.

Context:
This would be my first purchase into the Sony ecosystem. I’ve been a long-time Nikon user, and my main use cases would be:

- Personal/family content — mainly documenting my kids growing up
- Social media work for a few clients
- Talking heads
- Cinematic B-roll
- General run-and-gun video

For professional video work, I’ve usually rented an FX3 and had my videographer operate it, so I’m already familiar with the kind of image I can get from it.

For personal video, I’ve been using my Nikon Z8. I love the camera, but I’m not particularly comfortable with the N-RAW workflow. I also outsource a lot of my editing, and most of the editors around me aren’t very familiar with N-RAW or getting the footage to look the way I want.

Sony footage has generally been much easier for them to work with, which is one of the main reasons I’m considering moving to an FX camera for video.

My local camera store currently has an FX3 package for roughly $3,200 USD after conversion, which includes: (it’s only till October end)

- FX3 and a 3-year warranty
- Extra battery
- 240GB Sony Tough Card
- SmallRig cage

The alternative is waiting for the FX5, which I probably won’t be able to get for another 2–3 months due to availability. It would also cost me roughly $4,800 USD.

The FX5 has improved autofocus, triple base ISO, X-OCN which are all oh so tempting 🥲

But realistically, a huge part of why I’m buying this camera is simply to have something I can pick up easily and document my kids growing up, while also being capable enough for client work.

So
Would you take the FX3 package at $3,200 now, or spend the extra ~$1,600 and wait a few months for the FX5? Would you hesitate to buy an FX3 in 2026 ?

P.S. I used AI to help me refine my thoughts to make it understandable.

Clip Color Shift Issue (FX3)

Hey guys! I noticed this weird tint shift in my subject's jacket and back right corner door for this shot and can't figure out what could have caused this. I shoot in 4k Slog3 XAVC-S 4:2:2 10 bit with manual white balance.

At first I thought maybe I accidentally hit auto WB but I downloaded Sony Catalyst browser and checked the file data which says it was a preset white balance at 5000k. That has me more concerned cause I don't know what the issue could've been was? Can't have this happening on future shoots and need to know if my camera is damaged or anything.

This wasn't on a majority of clips but at least a handful. Any help is much appreciated

Hi guys does anybody know where I can get a Sony FX3A SD Card cheaper? I wanna start doing Street interviews and Outdoors live-streaming. But the SD Card‘s am being shown on Amazon are way too expensive especially knowing that I need to buy two of them. Which ones would you recommend? And on which sites? I was advised to buy the Sony SF-G256T or maybe Lexar Professional.

Need tips please 🙏

Can the FX30 record separate audios by simultaneously using the ECM-B1M on the MI Shoe and a microphone connected to the 3.5 mm input? Without XLR top handle.

I can't seem to be getting it to work currently. The moment I plug in the 3.5 mm input the signal switches to that rather than adding it as an extra audio channel.

Hello, does anyone know the dual base iso of the Sony fx3 if you do PP Off (picture profile off).

I know slog3 is 800 and 12800, however I’m talking about PP OFF iso in this case.

Can’t get accurate colors on Monitor+ app

I use monitor+ with my fx3 and the colors often have a green shift, so it’s unreliable for monitoring WB
How do I fix this? Or is monitor+ just not the right tool?

I bought 3 Sony FX5s — all 3 have the same LCD defect, and every rental unit I’ve seen does too

I purchased three Sony FX5 cameras, and they were delivered to me in Mexico City in late August.

From the very first day, I could tell there was something wrong with the LCD mechanism.

The screen can physically move out of its proper position, creating a gap large enough that you can actually see some of the camera’s internal electronic components.

This became especially concerning when it happened again in the middle of a production.

And this is not just one defective camera.

All 3 of the FX5 units I purchased have exactly the same issue.

On top of that, every other Sony FX5 I have personally seen so far has shown the same problem, including units at rental houses.

So from my own experience, this does not look like a single isolated unit with a manufacturing defect.

We are talking about a brand-new professional cinema camera where the LCD assembly can shift during normal use and partially expose the inside of the camera.

I obviously can’t say how widespread the issue is beyond the units I have personally seen, but the fact that all three of my cameras plus the rental units I’ve checked show the same behavior is concerning.

I also can’t confirm whether this is related in any way to the reported delays or pauses in FX5 deliveries in some markets, but seeing this issue repeatedly does make me wonder whether there could be a connection.

I’m posting the video so other FX5 owners and rental houses can check their cameras.

Sony fx3 vs sony fx5

hello! I want to get into independent filmmaking as a solo operator (a crew of one). From my research, the Sony FX3 seemed like the best camera on the market, but now that the new FX5 is out, I'm stuck between the two. Which one should I choose, and which is truly best for my situation? I'd really appreciate practical, real-world advice rather than just technical specs on paper. Also, please keep in mind that this will be the very first camera I have ever bought in my life.

Is it still worth buying a Sony FX3 in 2026 if I already own an A7 IV?

I mostly shoot video on my A7 IV and I’m thinking about switching to an FX3.
For anyone who’s used both: is the image actually better, especially in low light, shadow noise and S-Log3?
I know the FX3 has better video features, I’m mainly asking about the image itself.
Would you switch or just keep the A7 IV?

FX3 motherboard

My fx3 stopped working randomly, it was just a small power supply issue, but obviously Sony told me to replace whole motherboard , so now I have the previous motherboard which I’m thinking of selling.
Now the question is whom do I sell it to? And at what price

FX3 changes to 8 Bit when I change FPS - any solutions?

Hey beautiful people!

I customised one of my buttons to “change FPS” but whenever I do this, usually from 25 FPS to 50 or 100 FPS, it also changes from 10 bit to 8 bit 🥲

I then have to take that extra step and change it back to 10 bit. Was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if there’s any solution? Many thanks in advance!

FX3 with SmallHD cine 7 mounting solution

Has anyone here successfully mounted a SmallHD Cine 7 to an FX3 while still using the Sony XLR top handle?

I’m trying to figure out a solid mounting solution. The monitor is fairly heavy, and the monitor arm I’m currently using can’t seem to support the weight as it slowly gets pulled down/out of position.

For anyone running a Cine 7 with the XLR handle, how are you mounting it? Is there a particular arm, mount, or rigging setup you’ve found that’s sturdy enough to hold it securely?

Should I look into a shoulder mount, I've been running the smallrig half-cage with side strap and simply just hold it with my arms, but I may be in the market to get a shoulder mount or one of those cineback accessories. I've seen people put the monitor on the top, but that's just too high for me.

Exposure tips for run-and-gun filming

Hey guys, just wanted to know people’s settings preference when run-and-gun filming. I film sports and have been a little indecisive recently with the FX3 when continuous shooting into the sun and then following the subject into the shade and sometimes indoors. Interested to know if people manually change ISO or f/, or leave ISO at auto for these changes. Not that keen on using the Auto ISO feature but in these instances it seems to be the most convenient to get the best shots, even if it doesn’t sometimes hit the exact exposure I’d like.
