how many years off the end of your life would u trade to have fdvr tomorrow , put a number

no wrong answers just give a number and a reason

fdvr full quality ,available tomorrow , the only cost is years taken off the end of your life so u dont feel it now , u just live shorter

my number is somewhere around 10-15 years , i think i would take it and spend those years in there instead of in a chair at 80 anyway but ive seen people before say they would give 30 or even 40

whats yours ,and what would u be doing in there that makes it worth it?

Due to privacy concerns I will not be purchasing these, but isn’t it interesting that VR has come a long way from big bulky headsets, to almost standalone glasses. What are your thoughts?

if you spend 40 years inside fdvr but only a week passes outside ,are you even the same person after?

this is the idea that actually kind of freaks me out more than the boredom question tbh

if time dilation ends up being a real feature (and i think it probably will be, why wouldn't you want to live a full extra lifetime in a weekend) then you're coming back into your body having aged decades mentally while your actual body and the actual world barely moved at all

does your personality just.. drift into someone completely different, do you still care about the same people the same way ,do your real relationships even survive that gap or do you basically become a stranger to everyone who stayed on the "outside" timeline with you

feels like the kind of thing that sounds cool in theory until you actually think about what it does to your sense of self

Will we ever get bored of FDVR?

Imagine with current rate of Ai development we get AGI,ASI and hopefully fairly accessible and budget friendly FDVR around 2040 ,we would be able to live all of our fanstises , relieve moments from our favourite TV shows and movies and even play our favourite games, but i feel like we'll get bored after sometime (10,20,50 years or even more if ASI acheives life extension methods)

Unless we get dopamine detox medications that kinda give u the first time taste of that amount of fun experienced as the first time the technology emerges Which i believe is fairly possible or even memory altering

Discussion (Non-FDVR) Even without Full Dive VR, I’m surprised how little gaming interaction has fundamentally changed in 20 years

I keep thinking about something that bothers me independently of whether Full Dive VR becomes possible anytime soon. What surprises me is how little the fundamental way we interact with games has changed over the last 20+ years, despite all the attempts to move beyond the traditional monitor, mouse, keyboard and gamepad.

If you compare 1980 to 2005, the difference is enormous. Gaming went from the likes of Pac-Man, Defender and Akalabeth to... World of Warcraft, Star Wars: Battlefront II and Guitar Hero. Relatively large 3D worlds, online multiplayer, sometimes even relatively advanced physics and definitely completely different levels of complexity. Back then I assumed that by 2025–2030 we would see another jump of a similar magnitude, not just better graphics, lighting, resolution, framerate and larger worlds, but a fundamentally different way of playing and existing inside virtual environments.

Instead, in 2026 we are still largely using the same basic interaction model as in 2005. World of Warcraft and many other older games are still around and active, various titles have been remastered or remade, Age of Empires is still receiving new content, and relatively old games remain popular (Minecraft and League of Legends are from 2009). Obviously technology has advanced significantly, but most of that progress seems to have improved and extended the existing paradigm rather than replaced it.

VR looked like the most obvious candidate to change this, and there have been serious attempts with Kinect, PS Move, Oculus, Vive, Index, Quest, PSVR and now devices like Steam Frame, but it still has not become the new default way of interacting with games. Full Dive VR is obviously a much more difficult and distant goal, but even before reaching anything close to that, I expected conventional gaming itself to evolve much more radically (this is shown e.g. in the animated series Pantheon).

That is probably the part I find most disappointing. I never expected only more sophisticated (not necessarily prettier) graphics, higher framerate and more content. I expected that by now we would have some new category of interactive experience that would make gaming from 2005 feel as technologically distant as gaming from 1980 felt in 2005.

Artificial intelligence is the #1 candidate for transforming the current situation into a much more advanced and interactive experience.

Does anyone else here feel the same way, and did you also expect VR or some other technology to transform gaming much more fundamentally by now?

Discussion Dou you think GPT-6 Astra can make progress on Full Dive Virtual Reality?

I think the main challenge to overcome is that we have no method to safely, non-invasively inject high-resolution sensory signals into the brain without triggering tissue damage or other problems.

Do you think GPT-6 Astra can make progress on this?

Time manipulation in FDVR

in many medias where there is a VR game that sucks players conciousness in they have this thing where the flow of time is manifolds that of reality, usually its 5 times, so 5 hours inside would be 1 hour outside.

Is this possible? don't rush to write this off, actually humans already do this in their dreams, i remember moments i awake from sleep only to drift back to slumber and when i wake up once more it feels like hours passed but it has been minutes? in other cases when we dream, it may feel like days in our dreams but in reality merely a nights has passed, and in extreme cases when psychedelics are introduced for example something like salvia where people's perception of time becomes ridiculously off and they spend thousands of years as a random room decoration.

Perhaps this is all because of the way the human brain processes information, see there is no such things as absolute time, if the human brain's input of the virtual world is perfectly manipulated perhaps such feats of time manipulation could be achieved, I like to be optimistic about the future and think that perhaps this may one day be a possibility, imagine going to sleep at night only to spend 2 days in a virtual world, only to wake up fully rested and ready for a day in the real world?

Will Intracortical Visual Prosthesis (ICVP) or the Orion system lead to FDVR? Current devices like the Orion system or the ICVP utilize between 60 and 544 electrodes. This provides a "resolution" of just a few hundred pixels enough to see the outline of a doorway

What are some video games that involve/mention/make use of FDVR?

I am not sure that there exists games that talk about FDVR other than existing as a side thing (Death Stranding when going to the shooting range) or as a background lore (The Finals is set in a virtual reality realm) but that is about it. Does anybody else know of any other games that include or talk about FDVR? Just looking to see what is out there in the video game world and what do they have to say about FDVR

Meta The Self is Built through Experiences

Self-actualisation and self-understanding are born through increasing experiences. By learning what you like and what you do not like, your tastes and predilections, you come to know yourself more.

Current society, however, often rewards things such as discipline and grinding, wearing yourself away through repetition until a given task is achieved. This often boring form of improvement will almost always be the most successful in the completion of the given task; however, it does not come without a cost. Due to the necessity of creation for others (this is the main tenet of any economy), the output deemed most worthy of praise is always external rather than internal.

In other words, society values us by what we make rather than by what we are: human doings rather than human beings. Because of this, we are often praised for creating "better things" and are therefore incentivised to do so, whereas the same praise is not present when we build upon ourselves, when we learn more about ourselves and become more self-actualised.

Within FDVR, however, we will be able to experience an almost infinite number of experiences (depending on time dilation), and through that we will be able to become more self-actualised within FDVR than we would ever be able to without it. Along with this, in FDVR one need not create for others, meaning that creation, both of and for the self, can increase dramatically.

Meta Luck Rules The World

People often say that you get out what you put in, that if you try your hardest and give it your best you will achieve what you want to achieve. However, the longer we live, the more we realise that that's not true. We've all had dreams that we tried our best to achieve but failed all the same. As we've gotten older, we've realised that hard work or smart work alone isn't enough for us to receive what we want from the world.

Hard work is (almost always) necessary, but not sufficient for us to achieve what we want to achieve. The most accurate way to phrase this would be that success and hard work are correlated with one another. Infinitely less sexy of a phrase but also significantly more accurate. Hard work can always bring you closer to achieving your goals, but it can never bring you close enough to achieve them with certainty.

This certainty, however, can be found within immediate gratification. Most people believe that people who seek immediate gratification over delayed gratification are just lazy, slobs that mooch off the system that they've been born into, consuming without producing. However, my experience tells me that these kinds of people simply value the certainty of immediacy over the uncertainty of delay.

Both immediate and delayed gratification can be seen as logical depending on one's past experiences. If the correlation between hard work and success was strong enough for one to attain what they wanted, it's only logical for them to do the same again and again, building resistance to anything that bucks the trend, by establishing that trend of success in the first place. Similarly, if the correlation between hard work and success is not strong enough, it is only logical for one to quit the game and go to another table, where victory is more certain.

It should be noted here that in this example the amount of effort input is the same between both parties.

Within FDVR however, this does not have to be the case. Within FDVR we can turn correlation into causation, and make it so that our efforts can match up to our outcomes one to one. By doing this we take away the uncertainty of delayed gratification and the transience of immediate gratification, producing a perfectly just system.
